Wow....gotta say, I'm really glad I was so wrong about Smith. As many of you know, I was not a fan of his recruitment. I didn't think he had the size, speed, athleticism to compete at this level. He's not only proven me wrong, but he's being mentioned in the POY and All-American conversation. That's just...incredible.
I haven't been this wrong since I passed on buying a bunch of Bitcoin when it was about $2000.......
Congrats Braden, and congrats Coach Painter on a helluva find.

LOL Yep epic fail on the call. But at least you registered an opinion.

I thought he would be good. I sure didnt know he would be AA quality good and the 2nd best PG in America. Best in many people's eyes.

You’re wrong about Mockobee too.

Maybe you should fine new hobbies? Talent assessment isn’t one of them!

I likened him to Scotty Skiles. Skiles was not a tremendous athlete and he was also short. But there was just something about him that spelled competitor and success.

Smith is a floor general. And a coach on the court . Those are very rare qualities. That requires more than just athleticism!

Despite his lack of physical abilities, Skiles Had a very successful college career and a pretty good NBA career.

I believe with both Skiles and Smith, their success is ultimately connected to their college coaches and style of play. They are/were the perfect fit for their coaches system.

In a different system and a different coach both players may not have been as successful.

I liked and respected Skiles a lot even though he never played for Purdue

Very few of us predicted the success that Smith would have at the time he committed. I remember being very impressed by some YouTube videos but had no idea that he would be a likely first team All American by his junior year.

Similar things could be said about Edey and Ivey at the time of their commitment. I didn’t hear people predicting the greatness that Edey achieved or that Ivey would be the fifth pick in the NBA draft after his sophomore year.

Throw in Carsen Edwards and others before him and this is happening too often to be mere luck on Painter’s part.

Who do you think is the best PG? I'm guessing you consider Kam Jones a PG?

Unique to Marquette, Kam Jones is not their only PG. Some places have him as a 2/3. So If calling Kam Jones a 2/3 makes you feel better go and do so. But here are 3 sources that have him as Point Guard, where he initiates the offense NOW and also will in the NBA,.......

I don't always agree with Bone, but hell, I don't always agree with anyone on here. We all have takes that turn out right and some that turn out wrong. It's a message board after all. I've never understood why some like to dig up old takes and throw them in posters face. But that's just me.

People that have different opinions is what makes a board work. Otherwise, you just have an echo chamber, and we already have plenty of those elsewhere in our lives.

I have different opinions on what a point guard is and is supposed to do. Some people claim Steph Curry and Damon Lillard are awesome point guards. I see them both as guards that score a lot of points. Although he scored a lot of points, I saw Oscar Robertson as a point guard. Magic was a point guard. I’m not sure about Isiah Thomas or Wade.

My definition of a point guard is that of a guy who is the floor general and coach on the floor. I thought Sichting was a much better point guard than Parker. I saw Parker as more of a shooter.

I’m not as familiar with IU players. I thought Alford was a shooter. I thought Quinn Buckner was an awesome point guard .

I saw Carsen Edwards and Ivey as more of a shooter than point guard.

To me, smith is the pure definition of a point guard. Sort of like Stockton and Nash.

I know there is plenty of room for disagreement.

I didn't argue with you. I think it's debatable even with the sources you provided but don't really care one way or the other. Was just looking for clarification on your thoughts.

Hey, I was questioning his ability as well when we struggled earlier in the year. He just keeps proving people wrong...... including myself.

I'll gladly eat some crow for a prosperous Braden/Purdue team. Let's keep grinding Boilers!

I’m right more than I’m wrong. But if you’re gonna miss, miss big.
I’ll keep providing my semi-expert opinions though.

I think he’ll continue to struggle with the type of players that have always given him issues. But that’s just sports.
But, I also think he’ll make adjustments when that quick, long, physical guy is going to guard him.

I thought Oregon would be that team, but he controlled that whole game.

Actually no. Oregon has not been a team that has caused a lot of TOs, nor has great speed as a defensive team. The data bears hat out. Thus I felt good about our chances.

But yes, teams who do have the personnel to pressure Smith can slow Purdue down. And those that don't, are likely already beat, and just don't know it yet. He's that good.

Agreed. The difference I see from when they played, say, Marquette, is that Smith is attacking now instead of waiting for the defense to dictate where they want him to do. He's become the best high PnR PG in the country and is excellent at either getting his shot or dumping it off to TKR.
The area where he still gets in trouble is when he gets too deep into the lane but doesn't have a clear path to the bucket, no angle. He tends to get swallowed up and has 3 bigger guys all collapse on him forcing him into a tough pass or trying to dribble out of a bunch of defenders swiping at the ball.

To me we look like a completely different team as compared to the beginning of the year. We didn’t look very impressive and especially after that penn state game I thought we were going to struggle big time in conference play. Was always going to be an adjustment period after losing edey but we seem to really be hitting our stride now.

I'm always eager to add to the onslaught of ridicule when someone, who is very knowledgeable, makes a historical blunder. You are forgiven. Actually it's much better than you predicting he would be great, and later he was a turd. Thumbs up to you for the admission and guilt. Now we can keep in our back-pocket "Remember when Bonefish....."

He didn’t align with typical metrics and a lot missed on him. I saw him in person while in high school, and was very impressed. Grabbed Kim and took her to a game to see him.

I first saw him in an Indiana vs Kentucky Jr all-star game that I went to after he committed to Purdue. I told me sons that he had terrific court vision, could really pass and had shooting range. However, he was tiny. Not just short but light weight. He has added muscle since then and what a competitor he is.
My favorite play of the Oregon game was Braden blocking out Bittle and drawing the flagrant one. Just love watching him play.

Believe it was TJ that pointed it out , but it seemed he was trying to involve his teammates way too much (as a good PG does!) and he’s even said he hates shooting that much. But once he figured out it was best for the team when he scores, which then makes him a threat to score whenever, he can then involve teammates when needed.

I said he needed to start taking over and he just needed to find his way to do so. He’s damn good. Glad we get to witness him.

Yes that’s true but the offensive focus has shifted more to running through smith than it was running almost every possession through TKR like Edey before him. You’re correct when you say he’s attacking more and thus seeking his shot or bringing different scoring opportunities into play sooner in the clock. More team centric offense less standing and waiting for a kick out.

I think that was Tracey that wrapped his arm around Braden’s face?
