Can players declare for the portal at any time or only after their season is over, meaning, for some of these mid-majors or smaller conference teams that got knocked out of their conf tourney and aren't going to the big dance, are they now open for recruitment?
Painter needs a minimum of 2 starter level guys from the portal if he thinks he can make another FF run next year.

They probably can declare at any time but once they declare, their current school doesn’t have to honor the scholarship anymore. So I’d assume it’s in their best interest to wait until their season is done.

We have seen a few players already declare for portal (North Dakota scorer who scored 40+ multiple times and another 6’4 DPOTY from South Dakota state who also avg 17 a game) since their seasons are over already.

After a quick search it seems the portal officially opens to sign kids mid March (March 18 last year) and runs about 2 months through mid May (May 16 last year).

For both men's and women's basketball, the transfer portal for the 2024-25 academic year will open one day after the conclusion of the second round of the NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament and the NCAA Women's Basketball Tournament. The dates are listed below:

  • MBB transfer portal window: Monday, March 24 - Tuesday, April 22
  • WBB transfer portal window: Tuesday, March 25 - Wednesday, April 23

Is it possible for a player to enter the portal. And then join a team and play for it. If that team makes the second round of the tournament?

Negatory, there Big Woley......over and out.
Why not? You say they can enter the portal on 24 March. What is preventing them from getting a court order like the kid at Illinois did that will force his new team to play him. Because by not doing so, we are affecting his draft stock?

What’s preventing those two players from Rutgers from entering the portal. And then signing with a team like Kansas to play in the tourney other than morals and ethics?

Admittedly this seems so wrong. But it appears players with a good lawyer/agent could find a loophole And force the ncaa through a court injunction to allow them to play for their new team! And by the time the case is heard they will have already played for their new team.

Kid at Illinois was already on Illinois - got him an upside down banner

Illinois suspended him from playing. He got himself a smart lawyer. He forced his way back onto the team while awaiting a trial/hearing . And his lawyer claimed the suspension was hurting his draft stock.

So what would be stopping Harper from transferring and then finding that same lawyer who would claim the ncaa is hurting Harper’s draft stock by not allowing him to play for his new team?

I’ve seen a lot of crazier court motions made and approved this past year!

I don’t think you understand how the portal works.

It’s only open for a certain period (Tex posted dates above).

Until the ncaa rules players can change teams midseason, they won’t be able to go and leave a team and join another in the same season.

Would not be shocked if the ncaa is sued for it and allows it, but right now it’s not possible.

TSJ was already on Illinois and was playing during the season

The current portal rules

it probably will happen eventually but it is not possible right now

Well for starters, Wole - they'd have to be admitted/enrolled as students to the University of Kansas.....don't think it's possible to get through the admissions process that fast....but maybe that changes down the line.

You would think someone who has worked at universities for as long as Wole has he would understand that part at least

I’ve seen athletes be admitted through the admissions process in less than 10 minutes. Their handlers and athletic departments do everything for them.

What you are saying is it can’t be done under normal current NCAA rules. In the case of the player at Illinois it was said the school suspended him And that was the end of story until he found himself a smart lawyer. And neither the school or the ncaa could prevent him from not playing. And he was back on the team in a manner of weeks. And the ncaa and Illinois both bowed down and said they were sorry for even thinking of taking any action against him.

So what if the NCAA has rules!

If Harper really wanted to play for a team in the tournament, I have to believe a smart lawyer would find a loophole to allow him to do so.

Maybe he could pay a coach to resign and get instant eligibility to transfer! Kansas is a state that has no minimum academic requirements to be admitted. So they immediately admit him. And then they file a court case that the ncaa is prohibiting their player from working and impeding his right to trying to improve his draft stock and thereby is denying him potential income.

The only people who say it can’t happen are those people who believe rules and laws cannot be broken and must be obeyed!

I believe it’s now possible for a player to do anything they want and nobody is going to stop them
