Then look at our totals running v Minnesota, Maryland, Nebraska, Illinois (to be fair the monsoon game; no throwing) and Indiana.

big question that will answer other questions for this team. Can coach Williams and the OL make the same progress (or better) now as they did then

Injuries have to be recognized as a major factor here. We were playing without our top two running backs. Obviously we still have to adjust, but I'm not sure the lack of a running game against Illinois is entirely on the OL.

The primary factor is indeed the OL...it simply is overmatched, whether it be scheme, or, just physically (and mentally) not capable...but, the OL is bad...maybe historically bad.

But they were really no better in 19 to start the year so maybe there is hope?

Very well done. Is there any chance we could actually get big Dan the rent man? I just always assume he’s in the crowd looking anonymous ready to jump in if needed
If nothing else, he could sub in for Jeff on the radio show if callers get out of line. And just generally look tough on the sideline.

Neil Callaway is the OL Coach now.

I would be more inclined to hope for that if not for the RB position where Purdue is now done to 1 guy...for the better part of the rest of the year...and it is not a guy that is going to make a lot happen unfortunately.

With Horvath, the running game is better just based on him being the guy running the ball...

Right now...this OL is as bad as any in as long as I can recall...even Hazell and Hope had better...Tiller certainly did...Colletto did...that is going back 30+ years...and, ALL had better depth and overall quality at the RB position as well.

Purdue is as one-dimensional as a team can be, and, down its top two WRs and top TE as well...not a formula for success...compounded by the poor OL play, and, some lousy play calling. In '19, Brohm/staff found ways to overcome the OL problem...to date this season, they have not...and if they don't really soon, it is going to haunt them...perhaps as soon as this week, but, certainly thereafter.

You may think even Hazell had better but the truth is Brohm doesn’t have to win another game this year and is as good as any team Hazell had. If they only win 1 more they are better than any team Hazell had.

🥺

Cam Craig is supposed to be back this week. I look for Doerue to be back. Those “can’t talk about it” injuries never last more than a week. 😐

I believe they said on TV that Doerue was a non-Covid related illness. So I would expect him back.

Look, I am not at all an advocate of Hazell in ANY way...I am simply putting out there that he managed to put together a capable OL (which Brohm has yet to do, as, the only time he had one was actually with Hazell's guys ironically (or not so much)), and, that he had a quality backfield/depth at the RB position...something else Brohm has yet to do other than when he again, had Hazell's guys.

Brohm asleep is 10x the actual coach...that is not what is the topic at hand, however. The OL issue(s) have been there for some time, and, still...somehow...remain. The RB one...entirely self-imposed...and, inexcusable at this level frankly.

If Hazell could do it, I would like to think that virtually anyone could do it...which is why I can't for the life of me understand how Brohm has not.

I actually like Horvath as much as any rb Hazell had. We will see what happens with Doerue over then next few weeks bu I believe he is a starting caliber rb.

The O-line under Hazel was a lot more balanced. A lot more running and play action. I personally believe this o-line will be solid as the year goes on.

Brohm said today that it was a medical illness that could affect him all year...so, I absolutely would love for your expectation to hold true, but, given that nobody was aware of anything at all until he did not dress on Saturday...and, that so little is ever shared about any of the injuries...and, that there were expectations week after week a year ago that Moore would play (and he did not)...I am not holding my breath, as, if it were truly the case, no need for Brohm to throw out there that it could affect him all year...as, I took that to mean that he may not play the rest of the way in "Brohm-speak".

I had not heard that. Wow. Thanks for the update.

I like Horvath...for sure...and respect what he has done in his time at Purdue, but, he is not the talent of guys that even Hazell had...to his credit, he gets more out of his talent maybe than some of those guys did...I won't disagree with that, but, Hazell managed to land Knox, Fuller, Jones, Lankford-Johnson...all of who were productive, and, provided some depth at the position...to date, Brohm has landed Doerue, and, the jury is definitely still out.

I resisted this for a while .. but other than DJ Knox who was as good as horvath? Jones as a freshman ? Lankford and fuller couldnt set Horvaths locker up for him

I appreciate resisting, and, it is not a case of trying to stir anything up or even argue about the matter...it is debatable, but, there are other factors that matter as well.

I like Horvath and the kid plays as hard, or harder, than anyone/everyone...I already said it, he has gotten more out of his ability than most...a tribute to him for sure.

Jones was a very solid RB...and, very accomplished coming in with some quality games at Purdue as well.

Lankford was buried but had some quality games...same for Fuller. I am not saying that they are better or not...they were adequate backs regardless...I don't know that Horvath sees the field ahead of them if they are in the same backfield...perhaps he does though...a case could be made that he should/would.

Regardless...the ultimate point is this...EVERY coach at Purdue before Brohm has assembled an adequate (quality/respectable?) backfield...as it stands, Purdue's backfield is a walk-on transfer from UNLV. Even at full-strength, it is hands down the weakest assemblage at the position in more than 30 years...and, it makes absolutely no sense at all.
