We recruited the best shooters in the Midwest?

Wow, I always thought you seemed a reasonable poster

Since when did you get into the business of building straw men?

Did I ever say every coach and recruiting expert agreed that Mathias was the best shooter in the midwest?

Um no. But good job building that straw man, lbodel

Matt Painter however, did make that claim

Why are posters in this forum so binary? Why is everything so black and white - not everything is "you are either with us, or against us"

Too many posters on this forum falls into either the "fire Painter, he can't do anything right" or the "Don't you dare criticize Painter, when you aren't even good enough to be a Power 5 coach making millions a year" camp

Am I allowed to like Painter, yet want him to improve?
The internet is no place for debate and idea exchange, just hardline stances and repetition.

We did recruit the best shooters in the Midwest...................... then Shoop got ahold of them!!!

I have to believe it is at least partly mental. I have made the suggestion before that it would be a good investment to employ a team therapist. Particularly with an "old school" coach.. Sports psychology, training the mind, is an untapped tool, a potential for competitive edge, at the collegiate level. Purdue is all about innovation, right?

good shooters take good shots. Not sure that has been the case all year with our guys. I think they are good shooters, they just need to make proper decisions and take their shots that are in the flow of the game.

Very few bad shots are taken. Actually more decent shots are passed up and that is the problem. More than taking bad ones

That's why Vince was so effective last game. He took shots in motion and rhythm and knccked them down. All of our guards shoot a much higher percentage when they can catch and shoot especially coming off a screen. When they spot up the shot isn't as natural.

After tonights game I think we recruited a great shooter from Massachusetts in Jacquel Taylor.

Our team 36% puts us at 114th in the country in 3PT% and 8th in the conference.

There is not a single Purdue player in the list of 20 best 3PT% in the BIG

Just looking at BIG shooters recruited from BIG states, there is a big gulf between us and the leaders.

Best 3PT% amongst juniors. Not Stephens (32.5%), but Michigan's Walton (44.3%)

Best 3PT% amongst sophomores. Not Mathias (37.3%) but OSU's Williams at (46.6%). Actually, Mathias isn't even the top sophomore shooter at Purdue. He is behind PJ and Vince.

Best amongst freshmen. Not Cline (36%) but Iowa's Baer (45.9%)

With our inside presence, if we can place one or two players in the fringe of top 10 in shooting, edge into top 3 as a team in the conference (now Iowa at 40.5%), we would be truly lethal and be a legitimate national title contender

When the coach said that "3 best shooters" line, I think he was talking about how well the three shooters shot in high school & expressing confidence in the potential of the three players. Everyone knows high school and D1 are different games, and a superstar high school shooter might not adapt well to the pace and increased challenge from defenses in D1. Likely, each will improve with time.

I agree 100% with you that if one or two of them get their shooting going soon & can keep it going, we shall be formidable (more than we already are I mean). I think we are all hoping to see that, and I think it can happen when I see the confidence like we saw with PJ at times down the stretch.
