Tonight's Game

Unless Morton’s play improves drastically over this next month, can we please just play Heide with a little Colvin in those minutes instead? I would rather live with the ups and downs for the first half of the year to get them experience and I’m guessing a lot of the fans would too.
Painter: I’m a big advanced statistics fan
Me: The advanced stats say Morton shouldn’t play
Painter: 😡 NOT THISE STATS

This shows that our defense still sucks. Way to many back doors and drives from a terrible opponent. Not good.
Good thing they had an exhibition game and have a few more games/practices to figure it out before Xavier and Hawaii!

But cmon, patience my guy….. show me any team that’s not a pro team that’s perfect on defense the first exhibition game of the year or even the first few?

I rest my case on no more Morton

Admittedly, it's becoming a salty situation. Lots to learn, but I'm liking what I see from Mr. Heide. Fifty percent isn't bad......unless we're talking FT's. Haha.

Considered we brought back like out entire team this year. Yeah it's not a good sign. No excuse for it this year. We will see. But it was the same issue against Arkansas. We help to much on the ball and we keep getting burned.

Doesn’t really matter, every team is different and everyone is getting up to game speed still.

If we have the same issue(s) in 2 months, then I’ll be worried.

We have a lot of rough edges. I recall last year early in the regular season, we were a well oiled machine. Right now I don't see that and maybe that's not all bad. We always seem to "peak" too early. I like Heide and Colvin but Painter always gives upperclassmen more than a fair chance. Hopefully they both will see the floor more as the season progresses. I am really torn between Furst and TKR as to who is the better fit.

Cam twice, Brian once and Myles once that I saw. Could be more I just noticed those. Myles is much farther along on D than he was last year. I honestly don't know why those three got backdoored...whether up too high with body rather than hand or more than a step from their offensive player...or just didn't see ball and man, but only ball?
Yeah, this wasn't one for the defensive clinic video that's for sure. Smith got blown past, Gillis got back door cut on and of course Morton got beat off the dribble multiple times. I'm starting to be a little concerned that our defense may keep us from getting where we all want to be. 3 point shooting is still probably the #1 concern, but our defense as a whole has not been great.

I think Purdue is trying to amp up a bit on D...wanting to maybe create more turnovers than in the past. IF so, this is a natural sequence of moving away a bit from positional defense to more overplay as well as maybe one player doing something a bit different that creates another problem for another.

OT, but on to Myles since I was in a hurry yesterday and never added a comment about him not being shy. As of "now" the ball sticks with Myles a bit more than others. Part of that is learning and another part is his previous play in high school where he had to score off the dribble and so he gets the ball and takes a bit longer it seems to move the ball by shot, drive or pass. That can slow down the O depending on the timing off the ball. I do think he has improved his D as he was working harder on it to stay with his man more so than in the past. He will get there I believe and help Purdue this year.

Well for once, we won’t be at our best then in November and December. So it’ll be great if we start to peak in 2024 and not now.

That is the key for the tourney. I don't believe a team can be at its best all season and why I personally prefer some of the players being the X factor for that higher octane boost with little scouting report on them later in the year

Heres my final 2 cents on Arkansas and what they did to us and our loss - we let teams speed us up and make too many mistakes. One thing I like about Virginia, especially their teams who made deep runs including tourney title, when teams speed them up, they slow down even more and make less mistakes. As Goose said “you know why they call him Iceman? Stone cold. No mistakes”

Hopefully more into the season that won't happen...as much. Given a team like Arkansas at home and perhaps a benefit of fewer whistles will make it tough on a lot of teams, but as the offense gets more crisp, and into mid-season form, and if the players all become a bit more aggressive they can attack pressure instead of being on their heels as much.

Agreed. Our defense worries me. We try to help on the ball way to much. Get burned or a back door cut way to much because of it. Very frustrating. Hopefully we get it together in the next couple of weeks.

Those are EASILY fixed. The issue for this team and many others is containing the dribble without total sag and applying some pressure. If the team offensively gets more contributions from others, Zach can play a bit larger role on D to also help

Yes, saw Gillis doubling with Edey. Edey.....did CMP really think Edey needed help? Too much needless double teaming.

My guess now is that by the end of season the starting lineup will be Smith, Loyer, Heide, Gillis, and Edey. Of course, I may change my guess several times by the end of the season, but I feel like Heide and Gillis might complement the other 3 the best. Heide looks like a shooter who can also make the athletic play when needed, but we’ll see. Jones should also earn lots of minutes, but my guess is that he’ll eventually be coming off the bench. I am not convinced that TKR will show that he can play off of Edey and may be better pairing with Furst. The spacing just seems better with Gillis next to Edey.

Agree on the sticking with Myles right now. But man, that turn around jumper on the baseline was beautiful. So smooth. He's got a ways to go for sure, but you can see what he and Heide can bring down the road. Very exciting.

Don't disagree, but I'd love to have (good) Furst instead of Gillis. We're truly at our best when good Furst shows up, imo.

I think we give it about a month, so we can see how TKR and Edey do together vs competition like Xavier, Gonzaga and whomever else in Hawaii. After that, I think we should reassess.

I would like to see Jones off the bench, not because I don't think he's fine as a starter, but as a way to give Braden a break and not have to play 30+ each night. Need that dude rested come mid Feb and on. Would be great to get Heide ~15-20 a night and start Colvin off at 7-10 and then (hopefully) ramp that up to 10-15 with some games he stays in longer if he is doing well. My math is probably off there when counting minutes with everyone at the 3, so don't go at me too hard.

Would like Waddell to mix in there, but something seems off with him and his knee. Hope I'm completely wrong, but he is just moving a bit differently to me than the summer and euro trip (maybe swelling in the knee?). It'd be great to see him at 100% and see if he is able to contribute.

If Gillis can come off the bench and shoot the 3 at a decent clip, while providing his typical duties, then he will get to play decent mins. Hopefully, Furst will also be more aggressive and just play--don't think too much. Maybe pick up some hard fouls here and there, let em know that there's some dawg to you, ya know?

No doubt my opinion can change and usually does. I am rooting for TKR, among others, to prove me wrong.

Agree with a lot of this.

It looks like Smith and Loyer are locks to start and Painter seems to like Jones and Heide at the 3. Surprisingly (at least to me) Painter is looking at Morton as the backup at the point. Colvin looks like he's currently behind Heide for minutes and Waddell looks to be the 7th backcourt option.

Dang. Purdue lost 51-98 according that link lol.

Probably just my internet/phone being goofy and not showing things right but I am now officially in PANIC mode! :)

Didn't notice that before I posted it. It's from purduesports.com - must have been some Boilerepherine algorithm hiding in the source code.....haha.

Yeah, just seems…not fluid? Smooth? Maybe natural is the word I’m looking for? I hope he’s fine and it’s nothing. Just was something that stood out that seemed a bit different from when I saw him at the scrimmage and some of the euro trip games.
I thought he hitched once or twice when slowing down after plays ended.

A couple of things. Yes, Cam is doing well getting off some of that rust. I like Braden being aggressive off Zach's high screen...and I like Zach moving down the lane afterwards. Zach being leaner is a bit quicker and at what stage do you double team him? Similar effect of a high low game when you have the ball and a threat up high. I like Zach moving a bit more. That moving target is a bit harder to hit. @Thadoc1 had talked a bit about Cam being a shooter along with his athleticism, but I had not seen enough of him earlier, but he is going to help.

I don't know if it was the angle or not, but in the video above around the 15:15 mark or so it appears Cam has the ball on the left side of his chest at the FT line and then lifts the ball at an angle to get it where he is looking under the ball instead of starting on the right half of his body to start out aligned before the lift. Anyway, just caught my attention and rewound the video to make sure. The games will get tougher, but it should be another really good year and with some young players getting the rust off and another getting acclimated to college ball that should keep Purdue from stagnating.

CMP talked in the presser about how he was just trying to get guys as many minutes as he could in that game. He even specifically talked about how he was confused on where Morton was going to be playing. He told Morton he was the #4 and Morton said I'm playing the #1 aren't I? CMP laughed about it, so I don't think I would read too much into Morton playing PG in that game. He just did because of the lineups CMP was trying to get in there for PT.

I expect that Jones will eventually backup the 1. He may not be a pure point guard, but he has quickness and a decent handle and should be able to give Smith a breather when he needs one.
Unfortunately from listening to Painter talk he seems to like him playing with Smith anc Loyer. I think if one or two of the new wing contenders start playing really well with the size they add he’d hopefully reconsider the lineup

That’s currently what is happening because Jones is ahead of the wings and brings much need quickness, but it’s a long season and I think that someone else will emerge on the wing and allow Jones to focus more on backing up the 1 and 2.

Right now my gut says Heide is the one that emerges at the 3, but that is more of a guess than a prediction.
