Anyone watch the game and have any feedback, specifically how Hunter looked against Phinisee? Saw that Hunter went for 25 in a Tindley win.

it appears both players did well. fro m the story, it appears Phinisee may have played even better if not for several foul calls. Glad both players played well. it lends some cred to both the national and poster rankings for each player.

Ahhh, complianing about the refs. Guess he was destined to be a loosier.

It was a great, great game. Can't really call it a head-to-head match-up because McCutcheon plays zone, so they weren't guarding each other much.

FWIW, Rob Phinisee didn't complain about the refs in any way. The reporter from the J&C complained about them in his article and asked Rob about the refs. His answer was:

“Pretty frustrating,” Phinisee said. “I feel like I let my team down a little bit, but I feel like we finished strong still and we can take things away from that.”
Quite the prima dona, eh? ;.)

Being from Illinois , I will ask going into the game, which team was expected to win? And did the better team on this night win? Or was the win stolen by the decisions of the refs?

Phinise will look good on the IU bench.

I don't think Rob Phinisee or Eric Hunter will be getting the "freshman understudy" treatment.

Both IU and Purdue are gonna be thin at the outside guard slots next year (PU with only Edwards and Eastern returning as ball handling guards, and IU with only Durham and Green returning).

Both are going to be in a de facto position of needing to play quite a bit right away. Not sure how good Rob P is gonna be, but if he plays well? Right now he looks like a potential 20+ minute maybe starter.

Had this discussion with a few coaches today at lunch actually. Rob may in deed play minutes next season but it is more due to the lack of play makers on IU's roster that aren't either hot or cold. Hunter though is going to have to beat out some stiff competition next season to see major minutes. More than likely the combo of Cline, Eastern, and Boogie eat up a majority of the minutes along with Sasha Stefanovic coming off the bench. Will Hunter play? Of course he will because he has a lot of ability on the offensive end BUT his slight build may be a big liability on the defensive end at times next season. My guess is that Hunter will probably play between 8-10 minutes this season in a role very similar to that of Nojel's this season.

I see Hunter playing a lot more than that. Him and Cline occupy completely different roles on both ends of the floor - the ball has to be in someone's hands to run the show. If Edwards and Eastern each play about 30 minutes per game at the ball handling spots, that leaves 20 minutes for Hunter. I can't imagine that Painter is gonna be comfortable with Eastern and Cline as the two quickest players defensively and two primary ball handlers when Edwards is out of the game. Hunter is slight right now, but he is significantly better equipped to be ready to create offensive action and defend quickness than Stefanovic.

Not sure what Purdue's scholly situation is, but IU has two open slots, and I would be pretty surprised if IU doesn't add at least one more guard (either Langfrod or a grad transfer) before next season.

Is Hunter’s 5/7 shooting night from 3 an indication that he will be a strong 3 point shooter at the college level? I know that he shot a great percentage last season, but wondering how confident those who have seen him are that it will translate to the Big Ten level.

And again, that's a role occupied by two players already in Eastern and Edwards for next season. Hunter will play but doubtful he can take a massive amount of minutes from those two considering they'll probably end up playing 30+ a game next season each and probably minimally without each other on the court...similar to what you see now with PJ and Carsen.

Both Hunter and RP will see limited backup PG minutes (10-15 min/gm). Eastern/Edwards will start for Purdue. Durham/Green will start for IU. Pretty comparable recruits tbh.

I don’t know. If Carsen averages 32 and Eastern averages 28, that leaves 20 for Hunter (assuming Cline, Wheeler, and Sasha take all the minutes at the 3). The bigger issue will be whether Hunter is ready for such a large role.

I was there.Fairly impressed with Hunter. Smooth lefty.
As a IU fan I was unimpressed with IU's recruits. Kid from South Bend Anderson did nothing for me.
Now Hunter from Pickerington can play.
But Romeo is three levels better than all of them. He's the best I've seen in 40 year's of watching high school hoop's.Including all of my hometown Zeller's.
Got to say hello to coach Painter on the way out .

FWIW, both teams had 17 fouls.

Better than Glenn Robinson?

Robinson is the best HS player I've seen but the thing about him was alot of people never saw him until the finals or at Purdue. The finals was the first time I saw him and that was all I needed. You know as well as I do that if you are outside of the Indy umbrella of coverage, you go almost ignored. And it was even more so back then

I always thought Shawn Kemp was the best I've seen in HS. I saw Robinson a few times and he didn't have great games those nights. Hope to see Romeo soon.

I watched CC dismantle Kemp in the regional at Jeff ... he was the laziest player I've ever watched. Just one game's observation though.

The only time I saw Robinson in high school was the state final, but that’s all I needed to see.

I lived near the Quad Cities for 2 years at that time. Was that the CC team with the Barrett boys? What happened at CC? In my day, it was no deal playing them. We'd win at our place, them at theirs. Now, we're not even close.

As a public school parent, I refrain from answering this question. I will admit that they have a couple of damned athletic families with a lot of kids.

Best HS shooter I ever saw was Mount. Think George McGinnis was the best all around in HS.

I played against Mount, then became a friend, he outscored my whole team and we won the Sectional that year ... Maravich was damn good - I think a better shooter, but wow, who knows.

Best HS player, wow, tough one. McGinnis is definitely a strong contender. I'll be honest, in HS Damon Bailey was darn good as long as we limit it to HS only. I became a friend of his later too ... basketball can be a tight community. Zach Randolph had his way, but I never liked watching him.

Think I will probably take Lew Alcindor and the 71 game win streak for Power Memorial

Greg Oden dominated as well leading Lawrence North to 3 straight titles, though it didn’t hurt that he had Mike Conley as a teammate. He didn’t score like Bailey, but he didn’t have to for LN to be completely dominant.

Of course it depends on how good Hunter is early, but also consider Stefanovic looked pretty good defensively this summer. On the other hand I do think only one ball handler on the court is a little scary.

Eric Hunter and 1A Tindley with a throw down of 4A Lawrence North 69-60. Looks like Jon Octeus?

Best high school player I saw was either Ronnie Fields or Kevin Garnett. Both were from Farragut in Chicago. Ronnie was tabbed as the next MJ and he was so smooth on the court. Had a real bright future but had grade issues and then a real bad car accident that broke his neck I think. Played a lot overseas but lost a lot of athleticism after the accident.

Garnett was another level in high school. 6’10, moves like a guard, but dominated like a post. Watched him put up a quick 45 in the Proviso West Holiday Tourney his senior year in 3 quarters and rested the fourth.

I saw Garnett in the McDonald’s All American game his senior year. He was impressive and Paul Pierce was the top scorer, but the player that caught my eye the most was Kobe Bryant. He had superstar written all over him.

Didn't consider Maravich, only those that I saw in HS. Greatest one game scoring I saw was by N. Vermillion's Mike Newell in Mackey when he hung 54 on Frontier. 1969 Regional's game.

Troy Lewis was a good HS basketball player. Saw his score 50 at Lafayette Jeff and it did not seem he was even working for it. Probably a level down from most that are being talked about, but he was good.

Phinisee put up 50 against my Raiders last night who went for a whopping 8 points in the first half. Case of everything going right for one team and everything going wrong for the other team.

So, how good is he in the scope of the universe?

Definitely agree. One of the best "pure" shooters I've seen personally play for Purdue. Unfortunately, I never got to see Rick Mount play.

Harrison is down two starters to injury for the year who are probably the best two players inside for them at 6’6 and 6’4 and both athletic. HHS put a sophomore who hasn’t played varsity until this year on him and struggled. Phinisee is good but HHS will struggle with athletic teams this season...which is more of a product of their injuries more than anything.

Hunter is still hands down the better player IMO.
