The only experience I have with a coaching change is the Brohm to Walters situation as the others occurred before my "wisdom" kicked in. What I recall during that transition it that there was much guessing on who and that it happened rather quickly. I read where the AD said money would be made available to bring in a coach and that they wanted to move quickly.

What is quickly in college sports? I depicted a possible timeline to help me process this (release date = T):
  1. T-21 days, Purdue AD had knowledge of potential release and begins assembling a short list of candidates
  2. T-10 days, Purdue AD has to have a gut feel and sharpens his potential candidates to a short list
  3. T-1 day, Purdue AD confirms release with president and BoT to make the announcement
  4. T, Walters released and search is officially underway, short list of candidates are contacted to gauge interest
  5. T+3 days, Purdue AD should have 1-3 candidates defined as selection progresses
  6. T+5 days, selection is finalized, details are worked out
  7. T+8 days, new coach is announced
Does that timing feel about right to you?

I think it is pretty close. Bobinski seemed to indicate yesterday in the conference that they expected to announce a new coach in 7-10 days.

That's just enough time to come to an oral agreement, play in a championship game and get the contract signed...
I bet that the initial contact and vetting has taken place on the coach Bobo wants...

your timeline sounds as good as anything I've seen. It seems like things started to move after the NW loss based on Walters interview with Tom on On3. with 20/20 hindsight, if Purdue won the OT games against IL & NW, we'd probably see Walters back. It sounds like he had a plan to really overhaul the staff. If Odom ends up at WVU, I'd bet Walters is his DC.

Good for WVU!!

say Walters gets that job or some other, does anyone if his new salary would offset some of the buyout ?

With hope to Hazell, Hope was informed after the Minnesota game he would be fired at season’s end. Morgan had an oral agreement with his successor within a week. It was the coach from Northern Illinois. Unfortunately he enjoyed too much post season success and got a better offer and went to North Carolina State. Morgan was left to do a mad scramble after announcing Hope was fired.

I suspect your timeline is fairly accurate. And that BOBO probably has been in contact with several coaches for several weeks and he is waiting until after this weekend’s games to make an announcement.

Coaches who are playing for conference championships don’t like outside rumors. Although many coaches change teams before their bowl games.

I bet that Walters doesn’t get a DC job for 3-4 years.

Absolutely not. He burned too many bridges.
Speaking of burning bridges, now that we can speak of Ryan Walters in the past tense. Can we flesh out what he negatively did at Purdue and to Illinois that has cast a fog over his reputation???
