THT was all set to commit to Illinois. Until another player informed the Illinois coach, it's either him or me. it's beginning to look like college basketball is becoming a lot like the NBA with players taking over. .

an interesting story. I bring it up, because Purdue was once interested in THT.

it also provides some insight into the AAU drama, and also some hidden insight as to why Painter didn't recruit a certain 5 star guard who committed to Illinois.

He is Horton somebody! He was a 4* sf that Purdue had expressed some interest in, and had been brought up in several threads as a potential player of interest! He's supposedly ranked in the top 100, maybe top 50! He's out of the Chicago area.

His name is not really that important! What's more interesting is reading the story of two elite players who decided to switch aau teams together from mac Irvin fire to another big aau team . And then one player commits to Illinois and as the other player takes an official visit and is about to commit, Illinois pulls its offer and indicated the supposed friend gave Illinois an ultimatum it's either him or me! Illinois went with the 5* recruit!

I have to believe there is more to this story that is not being told! But to have a recruit take an official visit and then be told the school is pulling their offer based on the demands of another recruit speaks volumes!

Clearly you didn't click on the article link.

THT = Talen Horton-Tucker #2 player in the state of Illinois. Purdue had offered him early in the summer

Clearly I didn't. I think it's a bit presumptuous to think that many fans here would know who he is simply by his initials.

Sorry I didn't read the URL thoroughly.....
Ha - noticed it after I replied the first time.

I just figured most people on here followed recruiting as closely as I do. Going forward I will promise to use full names when discussing prospects

That article is garbage and unsubstantiated. Remember when everybody was saying that Eastern didn't want to play with Bowen and Nojel's Mom said that wasn't true. There was a single confirmation or source close to the situation on record. It also said that THT wasn't good enough.

Again, Wolegib loses all credibility when he doesn't even know the kids name. Horton somebody? Really. It would have taken a handful of seconds to avoid looking like you have no clue what you are talking about. More rubbish.

It all started with speculation on the fan boards and that was sourced. It also said that THT was evaluated and wasn't impressive. It sounded far more like sour grapes than anything else. The only person that knows THT was set to commit was THT. There can be all kinds of speculation, but he was very high on ISU for a long time and was an ISU lean from everything I saw on his Twitter leading up to it. Even before the other kid signed on.

Does this kind of thing happen? Sure it does. Players want to play with other players and dislike other players. But this was a hit piece that came out stealing the thunder of the kids decision. Saying that it wasn't his decision and he wasn't good enough for Illinois. Absolute garbage. THT is undersized for a wing st 6'5, but he can hoop and get buckets. I hope he has great success (unless playing Purdue). Illinois fans for whatever reason have high expectations even though they have been terrible for a while now. Underwood may get caught up in the FBI scandal as well. If I was a recruit I would stay far away from that dumpster fire.

the first post about him on this forum only used his initials. I was just trying to fit in and use the language that our posters use.

What credibility did I lose ? I lost cred because I didn't feel like typing his full name? I don't know what I'm talking about because I didn't remember his full name? I don't your name either. But I know when I'm being dissed.

I don't even know the first name of the other player involved. and I never claimed to be some recruiting GURU like YOU ! They are a couple of elite players going elsewhere. how much should a basic Purdue fan need or want to know? that's like saying I should know lonzo ball's brother's name and what his rival's standing number is. if he was coming to Purdue, I'd be interested. but since he's not, why should I bother knowing more?

I've never claimed to be an expert or have inside sources. But I have stayed at a holiday inn express before, and I do some internet research. Internet research is my profession, not college basketball recruiting. And I'll add many of the so called experts on this board are basically copy and pasting stuff they've read on other sites, and really have no clue either, they just like to sound like they do.

if you believe the article is rubbish, take it up with the author. I'm not that author. I just posted the link to provide some insight.. if you want to constantly argue with somebody, go to the I U board or get married.

Didn't bother reading your entire post, but yes. You posted about a kid and all of the implications without knowing what you were talking about. It's the same thing you do in the vast majority on your nonsense posts. Like when you spend an entire lengthy post talking about Tyler Campbell.

Not saying what most don't know already, but the world is all about leverage and the 5 star recruit has the leverage and their fair share of suitors. The recruit, however crazy we may think, can choose to make such demands (don't want to play with recruit XYZ - at least the player was honest about it). It's up to the coach to decide if they want to take the player or not. There will always be a coach out there who will want said player enough and give in. You cannot win without good players. Great players make all the difference. (So, to me, Illinois made the right call to take the 5 star and pull the 4 star - though only time will tell how these 2 players pan out because the 4 star could ultimately turn into the better player).

It's the unfortunate nature of the beast.

Even "clean" programs are susceptible to this type of stuff. There were murmurs of Coach K with Corey Magette, Lance Thomas and others back in the day. Of course, the smart coaches have low level people or those not linked to the program do the dirty stuff to keep their hands clean. Guys like Pitino were a little to cocky to think that it wouldn't fall back on them. You can use the excuse "I didn't know about it" once, but - even if Pitino didn't truly know (which I doubt, but let's assume he didn't know) - it just looks bad and someone has to take the heat.

Swanigan was a high character guy from a family (Barnes) that had no economic incentive to take something under the table. Yet, there had to be an NCAA investigation before he was allowed to suit up his freshman year (I think he missed a couple exhibition games and maybe even the first official game). Ultimately, Purdue was cleared, but you can't blame the need for the investigation. The game is dirty.

Painter seems to run a clean ship, which is refreshing and difficult to do while producing high level teams.

For the record Painter ran away from both of the Players Dosunmu we started recruiting him 3 years ago and Horton last year . A lot of rumors connected to Dosunmu and team harmony . I have no facts that is why we withdrew but it has been rumored .

There was also a rumor that Nick Irvin was mad that THT left his team, so he delivered an ultimatum to Brad Underwood that he would steer Mac Irvin Fire players away from Illinois if they didn’t pull THT’s offer. Unfortunately, this rumor is believable.

The AAU needs to be dissolved. There are people that have far too much control over these kids and their decisions and it's all driven by money. High school sports need only make a high school player ineligible for competing in AAU and problem is solved.

Many years ago it was against IHSAA rules to participate in AAU events.

That’s fine, but most of your prospects now days would pick AAU ball over high school ball, if they had to choose.

Most wouldn't and that would shrink the size of AAU big time. It wouldn't have all the filler players and teams. Especially if the kid is a multi-spot collegiate athlete. It would also limit the basketball acadamies like Brewster and Lalu. Those are the kids that would likely pick AAU over high school.

As for kids going overseas to getting paid, it's the reason why more don't do it now. College has the best coaches, training facilities, and exposure. None of that would change with the removal of AAU.

I think you underestimate the allure of AAU to top tier prospects, although you are likely right as to the "run of the mill" recruits.
Look at the current mobility of top tier recruits in choosing and staying at High School program.

The allure will be there for top prospects for sure, but the number of teams and tournaments would be vastly limited. Don't get me wrong, there will be a lot of folks pushing back and trying to draw the kids away. AAU is a big money maker.

Ironically, AAU basketball has completely destroyed the concept of Amateur Athlete. There was a time when the USA required their Olympians to be amateurs and AAU was an avenue for them to prepare for the Olympics.

Disagree. You get scouted at AAU events, not high school games, and the players and their families know this. Soccer is the same way.
