This isn't going to be popular, but I think former coach DH2 deserves some accolades

While I said from the first announcement of his hiring that he was the wrong choice he did recruit kids with character who rose above and won the bucket back.

Those kids, while undermanned stayed the course and played their hearts out even when getting taken to the wood shed way too many times. Props to everyone of those players who spent the hours in the weight room, in the classroom, and believing in themselves when many here and elsewhere didn't. What a great accomplishment.

Brohm and staff (and I'm not totally convinced there shouldn't be two more wins for the season lost by bad coaching) convinced these kids to stay and play and that may be Brohm's biggest accomplishment.

So....congrats to CDH2 for recruiting kids of great character, and to the players for doing what they did. And to the staff, if you're back next year the bar at 6-6 isn't nearly good enough.

That is complete bullshid. The biggest change in this year's team is their attitude and enthusiasm. No one will complain if we're 5-7 or 6-6 next year so long as there are no more Hazellian 40-point blowouts.
So....you're going to be happy with Danny Hope results AGAIN? Sorry, but the bar has to be raised dramatically next year and the years to come. The staff is making too much money not to.

And based on this forum and the posters constantly looking for that ledge to leap off of, 5-7 next year will make the waters below boil with the sharks attacking all who leap.

It's pretty clear we're going to hear whining from TD2 until Brohm wins a B1G championship since JB wasn't his choice to fill the opening last year. Now that he has pulled a rabbit out of the hat in his first season TD2 wants to give kudos to the overpaid stiff in the turtleneck instead of credit to the current staff. Give it a rest.

Purdue will have to replace a lot of mainstays on defense next year. This is going to take some patience. Hopefully we'll see more continuity on offense.

As to the original point of the thread, I have a hard time giving much credit to Haze. He was in deep denial about the real state of the program for most of 2015 and 2016.

I do feel happy for Garrett Hudson, though. He came up big for Purdue yesterday, and I'm sure these past couple years haven't been easy for him.

No but I know enough that you lose a lot of defensive fire power. After watching us being non-competitive for 4 years, I thought we would be a water treading team. Hoping for a competitive 3-9. Then a 5-7. Then a 6-6. Trending up every year

Next year will be tough. Losing a lot on defense and the offensive playmakers will be 2 years away from excelling and you are still rebuilding your OL. You bring a lot back on O and maybe with a few grad transfer or JC receivers and linemen they could be OK. I would take a carbon copy of 2017 in 2018 in hopes 2019 will be a 7/8 game winner.

When Coach Brohm first arrived and we fans were discussing our new coach and possible future results, comments were made that it wouldn't be fair to judge CB until he had his "own" players. Others pointed out that the day CB became Purdue's football coach these young men BECAME his players. Now it just can't be both ways...I for one believe these players became Brohm's team the first time he met with them. Not once has he even hinted at anything else. He has never done anything but take responsibility if there were short falls in a game or given credit to his players and staff when there was success. So no, while I have never uttered a word against Hope or Hazell, I believe he made this team his...in his image, determination, drive and self confidence. All things I had not seen from the same group of young men until this year. To credit any other previous coach for their growth and performance is absolutely wrong in my personal opinion. As for going 6-6 and not getting any better, why would you even assume that would happen? Especially after the improvement made in just one year. The entire college football world is commenting about Purdue's rise from the ashes in such a short period... to question that and hint that it would not continue seems like someone with an agenda.

Some good pieces there to build around: Neal, Barnes, Bailey, Turner, Higgins, Smiley, Hayes, Cason, Wilson, and Jallow all return next season that saw good time or started this year. There are a number of other players who saw good action on special teams and who will continue to develop with the 15 extra practices and the spring to step in to better roles.

TD2 is a "dick" hell all he does is find something to nit pick about this coach and team.

Let's be honest, he's not really a Purdue fan like most of us. He's mostly looking for a landing spot where he can get away with insulting IU's basketball coach, whoever it maybe, because it is no longer Bob Knight.

It is what it is but I take his opinions on all things Purdue with a grain of salt. He made a decision before Purdue hired Brohm that he wasn't the right guy for the job and this is one way he can seek to validate himself despite mounting evidence to the contrary.

So in essence, just like Hope diehards when Hazell was hired, all of your thoughts can pretty much be summed up as “Hazell is my guy, I hope Brohm fails... and not only do I hope he fails, I can’t wait to look for failure where there is none.”

Relax bud.. it would have taken your hero that you love so much many years to get past 6 wins in TWO COMBINED seasons....

Face it, the passive Barry Bonds will go down as the worst coach in Purdue history if Purdue plays another 500 years.

Lol.. you do realize your guy was a ****ing Joke at this level right? His staffs playcalling on both sides wasn’t even good at a high school JV Level ...

I get frustrated with a few things Brohm does but he’s Don Shula compared to passive Bonds

Ok so as I read the roster, I’m confused... does anyone with a “senior 4V” have to leave and anyone 3V or less get to stay if they so choose?

I notice Gelen Robinson is listed as “senior 3V”.... where as most of the players I thought were departing were 4V

If anything, Marcus Freeman gets the credit because those defensive players were recruited and developed under his coaching. Hazell gets credit for leaving Brohm with huge holes in the roster, very few weapons on offense, and taking us to historic lows. Make no mistake. If this team is coached by Hazell we probably have 2-3 wins again.

I’m imagining if we even handily beat Ohio and Illinois. Hazell made my neighbor Len look real imaginative

I've often wondered what is was like to be in Garrett's shoes...when the D this year gets so much praise. Had to be mixed emotions that he probably reconciled to being older and just putting it together finally...

Jump off just as quick as you jumped on internet tough guy. As I said earlier.....wait, you never read anything other than your own ramblings. You give it a rest if you don't like it. CDH2 recruited most of these players and that is something you don't deal in and that's facts. Brohm and staff helped a group of fine young men turn it around to a .500 season.

I always defended Hope even though I never thought he was our long term solution for a coach. Would I like him back? Meh. Would I rather have kept him instead of hiring Hazel? Oh yeah.

Hazell is my guy.....hardly...I stated from day one that a coach with his minor league record should never be hired and would never have success. I'll stand by the fact that he recruited most of these players who suffered so much.

I questioned the hiring of Brohm because I thought, and still do, that Les Miles would have been the better choice. I'll eat crow for a .500 season, but not a hell of a lot.

Not trying to validate anything TC. He did a solid job but as stated we'll see when he has his players. Maybe he'll be all that. Maybe he'll be this year.

As for being a PU fan,, no I didn't go there but I've defended Painter every step of the way when 80% of this board wanted him gone.

Hey TD2 - your first post in this thread urges moving our appreciation for this season to Hazell for recruiting these kids and now this post says we should demand great improvement next year from Brohm - you fail to recognize or acknowledge that it will take several Brohm recruiting classes to change this roster that you urge us to give Hazell credit for. Hazell never sniffed the kind of 6-6 season Brohm just posted, so to expect Brohm to win 8-9 or 10 games, lets get real and allow Brohm to bring in his guys. Meanwhile 6-6 or 7-5 or even 5-7 are light years ahead of where Hazell demonstrated he could take his guys.

I never urged moving appreciation anywhere except to appreciate that Hazell recruited the majority of those kids who wanted enough to work hard to get it. Even the ugliest woman in a beauty contest has some beauty. Again, I've never been a Hazell supporter. You can appreciate what part Brohm and staff had too.

Let's be clear. This season was far better than Hope's last year and I've defended Hope often on here. He got a raw deal and Burke withheld the resources necessary to compete in the upper level of the conference.

That said not every 6-6 season is the same and I think it says alot that we were in all of our games this season into the 4th quarter. The biggest problem with the last couple of years under Hope wasn't the record. It was the fact that it felt like we were miles away from taking another step forward since we were getting drubbed by many of the better teams we played.

Needless to say the vibe coming out of this season is much different. Feels like we won 6 but easily could've, and perhaps should've, won 7-8. Furthermore, I don't feel like it's a stretch to think that if Brohm gets a couple of good recruiting classes under his belt and people in place in his offense that we could have a team that would win 10 or more games in a season like this past one.

So yea it's easy, convenient, and lazy to label this as the same results we were getting under Hope but that's far from accurate.

Hope wasn't a terrible coach and might have done much more had Burke spent the money to pay assistants and upgrade facilities. And I see 6-6 as just that....6-6. Now if Saban or Urban were to do that, there might be room to question it.

I'm really not trying to lessen six wins after the past three years, I'm just trying to give a bit of praise to the kids the former coach brought in.

Exactly my point! By doing what you suggest “appreciate that Hazell recruited these kids....” means that Brohm will need several recruiting classes to have a team that has upperclassmen he really recruited - so your demanding dramatic improvement over 6-6 this year seems unrealistic since it will still be mostly Hazells guys in those upperclassmen roles for next couple years. But, I wouldn’t totally discount the possibility of dramatic improvement over “reasonable expectations” because Brohm has already done that this year.

You can’t be serious- that’s akin to thanking a mugger who robbed you and knocked your teeth out because you’re so happy with your new bridgework.

The kids and the new staff deserve ALL the credit- not the clueless moron.

Yes, there are "MANY" players that Hazell recruited that did well this year. Would they have done as well this year if Hazell and his staff were still coaching this team? I doubt it. if Hazell and his staff were still coaching this team, I doubt any of the players he recruited would have had close to the year they accomplished. Would these players Hazell recruited have led Purdue to a 6-6 season?

Looking back over the season, who made the greatest contributions to this team's success? I believe the biggest contributors were the players that Brohm brought. McCollum solidified our defense. Brohm switched Robinson to a new position where he excelled. Brohm brought in some dbacks who could actually defend. that credit goes to Brohm.

As for offense. if you read the recruiting sites, it was an assistant coach that convinced both Sindelar and Jones to come to Purdue, not Hazell.

I looked at last year's recruiting class. At one point in time, Hazell had a bunch of commitments - maybe 15. Of all of Hazell's commitments for the 2017 class, only 3 signed with Purdue: Sipe, Alstott, and DB Mackey. I hate to be negative, but I doubt Alstott or Sipe become future contributors.

Hazell left Purdue with a guy who punched his teammate out still on the team. Hazell left Purdue with several other sketchy players still on the team. Brohm sent them packing. Brohm had one of the biggest player purges in Boilermaker history. Make no mistake, this year was Brohm's team.

As for the players Hazell brought to Purdue, if you count the good, you must also count the bad and the ugly, and the ones who would NEVER even consider playing for Purdue if Hazell remained our coach. For every Jones, there is a Dawkins and Byars. Hazell had Etlin and Applebee , and allowed both players to leave so he could start ??? For every Bentley and Robinson, there is a McGeehee and Trae Hart !

Yes, there was a lot of talent on this team. But without a real coach, that talent would never have been cultivated and the results would have been the same. Credit goes to the guy who made the talent a winner, not the guy who brought the talent. Who was the coach of the Tampa Bay Bucs the year the y won the Super Bowl? John Gruden? or the guy who was there the previous year? Tony Dungy?

Using your philosophy, we should be praising all former PRO coaches who were fired, because of their incompetence, their respective teams were able to get the first pick in the draft and become instant winners. The guy who coached the Cleveland Cavs the year before LeBron arrived should be a Hall of Fame coach for losing so many games to help secure that first pick. Without his efforts, Lebron might have been drafted by some other team. and he was a genius for not being called out for intentionally losing. maybe Hazell thought by losing, that elite players would want to come to Purdue because they could play immediately.

How about also giving some praise as well to the players Brohm brought in? like a real defensive coordinator? Like LB McCollum? some offensive linemen? some defensive linemen? Switching positions for Sparks and Robinson? a couple of Dbs? Without them, this team would have been as bad as last year.

All Purdue head coaches have recruited some B1G and NFL caliber players. Using this logic, there should be a statue of Colletto in front of Ross-Ade.
