Why fire him yesterday? Either...
A) Things were just so bad on the field and with players looking to transfer they couldn't wait any longer, or
B) They feel so good about their chances in landing a new coach that they felt comfortable enough in firing Petrino now.

However, if you already have a verbal agreement with Brohm, was it necessary to fire Petrino so early? Why not let Petrino finish it out.

At the end of the day, firing Petrino now puts Brohm in a really tough spot for the next few weeks.

No question that A. is the answer. Much neater for Tyra if he waits until the end of the year to fire Petrino, but things were deteriorating rapidly.

Timing totally sucks. Now Purdue fans have to hear all these rumors till the season is over. Talk about a HUGE distraction.

The Louisville fanbase is rabid at this point-given the Hooker issues, the past AD issues, they all hate Petrino, etc...this allows them to potentially set the stage before the early signing period and for next year. The AD has to sell tickets, and the team needs recruits. They are going to be all in on Jeff; the short list starts and stops with him.

I think we'll know sooner rather than later. This will be hard to keep a secret for more than a day, if he has decided that is.

It is entirely A. Petrino had lost the locker room.
Lewvul fans who say there obviously is a deal in place with Brohm because of the timing shoot their credibility.

Exactly - puts a lot of pressure of Jeff to make his intentions known. He's going to constantly get hit with questions about his future from the media, players, and recruits. If he is going to be the next coach at UofL, he's hating that Petrino got fired with two weeks left in the season.

Not just Purdue fans. You got recruits or potential recruits, ie David Bell.

The thing I still find interesting, and cannot understand, is Wright committing on Friday. Why Friday?

I live in Louisville. I have heard Petrino firing rumors for six weeks. Wright had to know that Brohm would be at the top of UL’s list, if Petrino was fired, so why not wait until after the season to commit and go to UL, if Brohm was possibly leaving. Brohm said in his conference that is straight with his recruits. You know this question came up with Wright’s family, so that is why I don’t think it is a done deal yet like everyone makes it out to be. I am not saying it might not happen, but I don’t it is a lost cause at this point.

I agree. The Wright commitment is most favorable tea leaf for us in this whole thing. It makes zero sense to commit when he did unless he was sure on Brohm.

I think decommits and transfers did Petrino in. Now you have something definitive to tell the team to wait and see who's going to be hired for next year.

I think it's pretty easy for a coach to recruit a kid with every intention of coaching for team A, but then when team B comes calling, he takes that job. It's a pretty simple conversation for Brohm to have with the kid and his parents.
It probably went something like "There are no guarantees in life. Things happen where we are forced to make a decision, whether that's as a player or coach. And when those decision points come, you make them with the best intentions for you and your family."

Hate to say it, Wright could also feel comfy flipping to UL with Brohm :(
Maybe that was his agreement with Brohm. Commit to Purdue to get other recruiters off your back and flip to L'ville if I decide to go.
Obviously he has interest in L'ville or he would just say I have no interest in the job and all the problems surrounding this would cease. No more talking to recruits about it and being questioned everyday about it.

I think the firing happening now plays more in the favor of Purdue. It takes a lot of the emotional element out of the decision because he may refuse to sign an initial letter of acceptance (which got UT in trouble last year) until the end of the season. Or he may simply say, you'll need to wait until the season is over for my decision.

Had they waited, emotion could have played more of a factor in that there would be a smaller window for Brohm to choose.

Why would you give up your biggest bargaining chip? It won’t affect Brohm at all by saying nothing. Now he can get that salary up to 5 million a year + incentives and increase the salaries of his assistant coaches. Plus fans will think it’s a huge win if he stays and appreciate him more (if possible). Let the rumors build up and when he stays, it will help recruiting going forward. Brohm is handling it the smartest way he could. Sucks for Purdue fans but it’s the right play. He can now demand whatever he wants. Including a brand new to him 1994 Accord with stock everything.

I am almost more unsettled about the potential timing of Brohm's decision than the decision itself. If he were to announce between now and the Monday after the bucket game that he is leaving, yes we would have decommits, but the remaining staff could work like hell to secure as many pieces of the recruiting class as possible. Maybe we could even have a new coach hired by December, who would then have 2-3 weeks to recruit before the early signing period. But if Brohm waits until Dec 5th to hit the eject button due to the drop in the buyout, then whatever is left of a staff has only 2 weeks to secure the recruiting class or at least prevent guys from signing elsewhere in December.

I think if we were to lose Brohm, we could probably find another coach capable of winning 7-9 games. But if this recruiting class turns into a mess it will take a few more years to get there regardless of the hire.

This is like pulling a band aid. Need to get it over with ASAP.

I agree......................Brohm is smart to handle his press conference the way he did.....why not try to get a little more money to stay.... his success speaks for itself ......... plus his recruiting class coming in speaks volumes!!! We all would do the same....Besides when he does decide to go...a job like Clemson could be available after Dabo high tails it to AL when Saban retires in the next couple of years.......Louisville job is a down grade to say the least....or a crack at the NFL

The ball is firmly in MBobs court. I still think we will know if he’s staying at Purdue via an extension well before Dec 6. And if we don’t, that means he’s gone. Honestly losing our class that late in the game is as concerning as anything. We’d find a coach but not in time to save the class IMO.
