The good:
The bad:
- ORB. Eifert, Eastern, and Haarms are all crashing the board like crazy (combined for 12 ORBs between those 3). We may be missing a ton of shots but we are grabbing a whopping 19 ORBs (47.5%)! That's the MSU bully ball model, and without as much skilled player, we really need to steal some possessions.
- Eastern. So much for the "start Hunter / bench Nojel" or "Nojel's giving half-ass effort b/c he's transferring" sh!t. He was making a difference defensively and offensively (12 pts, 6 ORBs, including one he just ripped away from the defender for an easy 2). As soon as he took a seat in the first half, Persons took off. His complete stat-line: 12 pts (5-7 FG, 2-3 FT), 9 REBs, 2 STLs, 1 BLK, 1 AST, 1 TO.
- Posting up Eastern. I've been wanting to see some Eastern post-up to take advantage of his size advantage, now that we don't really have an Isaac Haas eating up space down low. Painter did that and it was awesome.
- P&R. I see we run a ton of P&R, and that's exactly how we should do it given our personnel. Haarms and E-Bo did a great job setting the screen and rolling to the basket, and Carsen and Cline are great at finding their partner.
- Defense. I love how we are making use of our length and active hands to force 18 TOs. The pressure defense is back and I love it. The long wing span of Eastern, Wheeler and Carsen really bothered the Ball State players.
- Intensity. Floor burns are back, led by Eifert and Sasha! And I can't count how many charges Haarms drew. This team has plenty of flaws and makes plenty of mistakes, but as long as they play hard, I will never be too upset. We may not be as good as the other team, but we should never lose the hustle battle.
The bad:
- 3-pt shooting. We see how ugly it can be when our 3s are not falling (only 7-32, 21.9%). In one sequence before half time we got 3 ORBs, only to miss 3 open 3s and couldn't cash in. Yuck! Cline was especially bad (1-9), missing multiple open 3s, and Carsen is 2-10.
- FTs. The final tally was actually a decent 70.8%, but it looked a lot worse early on when neither Haarms or Nojel can hit 2 consecutive FTs. The two combined for 7-11, which unfortunately is actually "not bad" by their standard.
- Sasha. Outside for a diving on the floor (which I ABSOLUTELY adore) and won that 40-60 ball, he was horrible and flat out getting beat (TBF, Boudreaux was getting beat too multiple times, and to an extent Wheeler too, but at least E-Bo got 7 REBs and Wheeler got 2 ORBs and 2 BLKs). Sasha (and Wheeler) also committed the deadliest kind of TOs (pick-6s), which are momentum-killing.
- Luck. It was reminiscent of the UALR game when UALR just hit some incredibly lucky shots. Ball State has multiple 3s banked in or rolled in, or desperation heave at the end of shot clock going in. Once those shots stopped falling in the 2nd half, we pulled away.
- PFs. I understand the refs is calling tight, but we really need to be smart with our fouls. Some of them are just unnecessary, like Eastern's first when he went after an ORB when the BSU player already got position. That made Painter taking him out early, and immediately Persons came alive. The same with Haarms, EBo and Eifert, as those 3 combined for 12 fouls.
- Final winning margin. Towards the end of the game, I was saying, "No 3; no 3." Coz we were up 12, and if they made a 3, then we would win by only 9. Why does it matter? Under the new NET system that the NCAA adopted, scoring margin is capped at 10. So in the eyes of NCAA ranking, it doesn't matter if we won by 10 or 70, but it does make a difference winning by 10 or 9. Sure, it's probably only affecting fraction of a decimal, but hey, I am for every thing that gives Purdue an edge in the NCAAT seeding.
