The front page of the Lansing State Journal currently features an article proclaiming that Izzo lost out on recruits because he wouldn't cheat.

Standing beside him in the photo is Branden Dawson.

Ironic or Oxymoronic?

No one cheats these days....if discovered they just say....

"I didn't know anything about it, I heard about it the same time you did"

There are a lot of accusations written on this forum about Izzo cheating. To the people who make these claims, where is your proof that it is actually happening?

I understand it is just a message board, but accusing someone without proof, or on just message board rumor, is not to be ethical either.

I don't have dog in the fight either way. Just curious, I guess...

Also he claimed Painter was who turned him in for unrelated violations after Dawson went to msu. Izzo actually served a suspension for it if I recall. Yet he was front and center crying about losing Cliff Alexander. Now Cliff is under investigation. Crazy how that happens...

Hey, it's Izzo. If he's not whining and crying you better check his pulse.

My recollection is that Izzo's suspension revolved around hiring Valentine's HS coach to serve as a counselor at a summer camp for something like $75 per day, but before Valentine had officially committed. So, he was hiring someone on a temporary basis who had contact with a potential recruit. It was widely assumed that Valentine would commit to MSU, so the hire probably had no impact on his decision.

I hope I'm remembering it properly, and if I have the details wrong, I apologize in advance.

Was he suspended for vacation purposes?

When it looked like Dawson was not going to MSU, guys from your MSU board got on this board talking about how dirty the Dawson recruiting had become. We had no clue until accused by the MSU guys. There was a lot of talk about payments to handlers under the table and such. I don't recall all of the issues, but all (ALL) of the talk about how dirty the recruiting of Dawson had become came directly from you MSU guys.

Once Dawson committed to MSU, the whole "story" amazingly cleared up and now Dawson is the poster boy for not cheating. Funny how we now look at MSU being full of hypocrates, eh?

Actually, the first stories about Dawson's recruiting being crooked came from Peegs (possibly Jim Reamer, but don't quote me on that part). The GBI guys wouldn't say anything other than "no comment." My most reliable info came to me directly from a prominent HS Athletic Director in NW Indiana whom I happen to know quite well through my role in HS football. I'm not going to reveal his name, but he told me in no uncertain terms that it was a very shady situation.

If people don't want to believe it, then don't. It's water under the bridge anyway. As for me, I'd bet my house - and do so very comfortably - that Dawson's recruitment was crooked.

Full disclosure: Was it ever suggested to me that Tom Izzo was directly involved in it or had knowledge of it? No. Is it possible that's true? Mmmmm....it's possible he wasn't directly involved in it, yes. I have a very hard time believing he didn't have knowledge of it. But I am absolutely, 100% positive that "Michigan State people" were most definitely involved. And if it happened for Dawson, I find it highly unlikely it hasn't happened with others too.

Crooked.

Painter is the one who turned him in. By rule, if a coach has knowledge of any cheating, whether it happens at his school or another, he's obligated to turn it in. Painter knew about it, so he turned it in.

Hey Roke - IZZO WAS SUSPENDED BY THE NCAA FOR RECRUITING VIOLATIONS, Do you need more proof than that? Before all you M$Uites get your panties in a bunch over the reasons...face the facts. THE NCAA SUSPENDED HIM. Clearly he had been doing enough things wrong that this was warranted,

and Dawson's MSU career will end with no Final Fours . . .

and just a sliver of one Big Ten championship (3-way tie a couple years ago). Money bought their integrity, but very little else.

Integrity? So covering up rape, having guys admitted with supposed special needs and other bull is a man of great integrity? Izzo had to know that Dawson was getting rides to campus for all those U officials and it never once occurred to him to ask how it was happening? Just like Coach K who turns a blind eye to a kid with a $10,000 diamond in his ear. If they are national almost yearly, they are cheating.

And even more irony.....you know how the media pundits LOVED to say every four year player at m$u goes to the final 4? Well guess what? Streak ended with Appling and Payne - purported rapists. And MSUites, you are correct they were not prosecuted and thus committed no crime. However, unlike you I can read their deposition (reading isnt that hard) and see their direct quotes. It is not pretty. And me thinks the streak of 4year NON-final-four players will be extended with Dawson. Lol. By the way, how does he like playing the four-power forward this year? Gee, playing wing is fun and that is why I go to msu. Another Izzo lie-fraud exposed

I suppose the same standard should be used for Coach Wooden at UCLA. I am sure that where there is smoke there is fire in most places, so the rumors on this forum have as much of a chance to be true as not. I was just curious.

Some of the responses above suggest I am a MSU guy. I am not. My family has been attending Purdue since the 1950's. Currently I have my son, who is a manager for men's bball team. My niece is on campus right now, as are two of my nephews. I graduated in 1984.

I've been donating a full athletic scholarship to a Purdue athlete for at least the past decade, in addition to my kids tuition and fees.

I guess the lesson is not to assume anything, and don't believe everything you hear.

Just because someone is dirtier than him to get a player does not mean he is clean.

That is exactly how it happened. MSU fans said Izzo was backing off due to "handlers" and "package deals". Then came to this board and bitched non-stop about Purdue making dirty accusations.

Unless, of course, you count that knock out early in the first round of the last game!!! Punk finally got back some of what he's been putting out for four years.

Can't wait til we beat msu again. Painter needs to step the f#%& up and sweep the shartans. We haven't beat them in like 4 years, beyond pathetic. Sick of drive by msu douches constantly reminding us to. Time for us to go pull 7 straight against them. Worst fanbase in bigten by far.
