Some interesting thoughts from two of Purdue's seniors and the two well-respected coaches.......

PJ Thompson:

"We've just got to carry momentum and come out and be ready. We know we're about to enter into one of the toughest schedules in college basketball, in my opinion. It's nothing we haven't been through. We've been preparing for this since we've been in college. We've had a lot of work to do getting ready for this trip. This can prepare you for the NCAA tournament."

Dakota Mathias:

"We're taking on some of the top-ranked teams. We're fortunate to have a great opportunity to play some top 10 competition ***. First, we've got to take care of Tennessee, but it's just a great opportunity ahead. We're really excited about the opportunity."

Tennessee coach Rick Barnes:

"Watching Purdue play, they have been together and they are good. [They] benefited greatly this summer going to Taiwan and playing in the World University Games. I am as curious and excited to see how we respond against what is thrown at us. We are going to get hit with some things going up against some stronger, more physical teams than we have played to this point."

Purdue coach Matt Painter:

"We run into a tough opponent right away. It's important, just like you're going into any tournament, you're ready to play whether you win or you lose. You try to lock into Tennessee. I know coach Barnes' team always is tough defensively, they always play hard. Very demanding coach, very successful coach. So we know from a competitive standpoint, we're going to have to be ready to go from day one.

"I think you've got to be able to get into a mindset. You love these tournaments. You go to nice weather, it's a great setup. It's one of the best tournaments that's out there. You have to be disciplined and you have to be ready to play."

It should be a great game and well contested. Tennessee will challenge the Boilers up and down the court. Can the Boilers limit the turnovers/mistakes and hold their own on the glass? If so, they'll have an excellent chance of moving on......the competition starts ramping up quickly.

Boiler up, my friends.......and a safe and Happy Thanksgiving to all!

Barnes in various outlets have talked about him not wanting a physical game...and I'm sure he means he wants freedom to slash to the bucket for his team and maulings inside for his team on D. I just want a W and to not notice the jokers in the stripes...

My guess is they would rather shoot lots of free throws rather than allow the bigs to bang around down low.

As a coach, I've always told my players that refs don't decide games ... to keep yourself enough ahead that they can't stop you ... to know that if they're bad, they're bad for both teams .... but I've seen games that were definitely decided by refs ... even in the first five minutes when they call a big guy for stuff he's never been called for.

Sorry, just needed to vent. I'm so damned excited about this tournament and I just want the best teams to win ... and for winners to not be shaped by officiating. Let the players and the coaches determine the winners

The two guard...I "thought" I saw he hasn't been to the line adn so they must just use him for spacing being so deadly and not getting to the line...

yeah, you tell players a lot of things that are not exactly true becasue you don't want an excuse or distraction...
We know different though... ;)

Based on the comments and some minimal stats, it sure seems that these are two very opposite teams. If so, I like our chances. I think we have the overall power and breadth of styles to shape a game like this ...

there are bad lies and there are good lies ... especially when shaping young minds ....

I expect a battle of contrasts...but Purdue can play a lot of ways.

We need to play this type of team. Great experience and so far so good. I'll take, these refs for every game - so far

Given up 4 offensive rebounds that resulted in 2 put backs already. Good job by Painter identifying a weakness and fixing it. I am so ready for him to leave if we don't make the final 4.

Haarms didn't need to fly from the backside to try and block that shot....he should have maintained the backside rebounding help there.

Really struggling with bad play coupled with good play....need to be more even keeled. Can't play really well for a few minutes and then turn around have bad decisions on offense and poor defense the next few minutes. Hopefully just some adjustment needed to UT's speed and style of play.

We need to play a Rick Barnes team early every year... Along with the WVU scrimmage
