This article gives me the chills....and I'm a cynical SOB who can only remember getting this feeling twice before from Purdue basketball - Kramer's swim move, and the Swanigan-Barnes adoption story. When people do something extraordinary that I haven't seen before.
When was the last time we had one guy with the same effect? Ray imo has single handedly catalyzed the same leadership that the Baby Boilers gave collectively. Cardinal and Kramer are my two favorite Boilers of all time, but Davis might end up topping them both.
This man has winner stamped all over him, and will be successful way beyond the confines of college ball......not that I'd be surprised to see him will his way onto an NBA career
But he is more than just the locker-room. Boiledsports also has an article which makes a great point that Davis carried the team during the season-changing stretch this past Jan/Feb when we beat 3 ranked teams in 10 days. Davis was the leading scorer in all three games. In fact, it was pretty much the Davis show when you look at the scoring distribution over those three games. I have no doubt that there will be games this season when Ray scores big when the designated scorers (AJ, Vince, Swan, Kendall) falters
Davis 21 pts/game
AJ 10.3 pts/game
Smotherman 7.7
Octeus 7
Vince 5.7
Mathias 5
Kendall 3

Sophomore forward Vince Edwards said he and Davis had a "heart-to-heart" conversation on the eve of the first practice in October. Part of Davis' message was that someone needs to take over the leadership role when Davis moves on.
Purdue's players know that time is coming. However, they don't need the benefit of time to appreciate their mentor. The Boilermakers say they're motivated to repay him for his help.
One particular reward keeps coming up.
"The only thing he hasn't been through is a great NCAA tournament run," Edwards said. "We want him to get that last chance to go out on a high note, feel great about himself and be the last man standing."
