This article gives me the chills....and I'm a cynical SOB who can only remember getting this feeling twice before from Purdue basketball - Kramer's swim move, and the Swanigan-Barnes adoption story. When people do something extraordinary that I haven't seen before.

When was the last time we had one guy with the same effect? Ray imo has single handedly catalyzed the same leadership that the Baby Boilers gave collectively. Cardinal and Kramer are my two favorite Boilers of all time, but Davis might end up topping them both.

This man has winner stamped all over him, and will be successful way beyond the confines of college ball......not that I'd be surprised to see him will his way onto an NBA career

But he is more than just the locker-room. Boiledsports also has an article which makes a great point that Davis carried the team during the season-changing stretch this past Jan/Feb when we beat 3 ranked teams in 10 days. Davis was the leading scorer in all three games. In fact, it was pretty much the Davis show when you look at the scoring distribution over those three games. I have no doubt that there will be games this season when Ray scores big when the designated scorers (AJ, Vince, Swan, Kendall) falters

Davis 21 pts/game

AJ 10.3 pts/game

Smotherman 7.7

Octeus 7

Vince 5.7

Mathias 5

Kendall 3

Sophomore forward Vince Edwards said he and Davis had a "heart-to-heart" conversation on the eve of the first practice in October. Part of Davis' message was that someone needs to take over the leadership role when Davis moves on.

Purdue's players know that time is coming. However, they don't need the benefit of time to appreciate their mentor. The Boilermakers say they're motivated to repay him for his help.

One particular reward keeps coming up.

"The only thing he hasn't been through is a great NCAA tournament run," Edwards said. "We want him to get that last chance to go out on a high note, feel great about himself and be the last man standing."

"He's a true boilermaker"

People say this all the time, and other have questioned what it means. I don't think it's a clear cut definition, but if there was, Raphael Davis might just be that definition. Just like Kramer was. Just like Cardinal was. Just like Hummel was.

I think it's someone who:
-works extremely hard
-doesn't take their situation for granted
-is a 4 year guy (not always)
-a team first guy
-makes people around them better
-steps up to a challenge
-accepts responsibility for the outcome
-knows they are fortunate and blessed to be able to play basketball at a high level.
-value the importance of a Purdue Education
-play for the name on the front of the jersey and not the one on the back.

Davis is a true Boilermaker in every sense of the word.

Go to bed you cynical old bast..... Actually that's a pretty good post. Wasn't there some type of story last year about Ray calling everyone on the team to talk about goals and expectations for the season? The natural leadership and respect from his team mates is reflected often when we read articles on here or linked from other sources. It will be hard to see Ray take the floor for the last time, comparable to Hummel's last game.

This..."Sophomore forward Vince Edwards said he and Davis had a "heart-to-heart" conversation on the eve of the first practice in October. Not only recognizing the need day in and day out from one team to another, but starting the process of ownership in Edwards will grow this year.

As if we needed any more information to like Ray Davis any more!!! Definitely in my pantheon of favorite Boilers ever! It will be hard to uproot Cardinal as my favorite but if Davis leads Purdue on a run in the tourney with shut down defense and leadership...he most definitely could!
