Yep. Qaz is likely right. His Expat status is likely his way out of serving.
Interesting to think how many here might have grown up in the Vietnam War Era, and think in terms of getting out of serving. People in the Israeli culture openly accept that it is their duty to serve to defend their homeland. And they don't fight in foreign wars. He is probably thinking that he has 10 years in which to enlist, so his plans for basketball can proceed for now.

Agree that the culture there is much more akin to the US view in WWII vs the Vietnam era. As you said, I doubt Omer is trying to 'get out' of anything, likely views it as a business decision to defer his service. He can likely help his country much more by signing an NBA contract in two years versus being another 18 year old in the service today.
