"Our expectations at A&M are very high. We believe that we should compete for SEC championships on an annual basis and, at times, national championships. I believe that we need a new coach to take us there. On behalf of Aggies everywhere, my thanks to Kevin and his family for his service to Texas A&M. I wish him the very best."

Can't believe Texas A&M was this delusional. They were competing in SEC with the likes of Alabama, LSU, Tennessee, and Auburn. Did they really think they were gonna automatically be an SEC championship contender? They were not even in SEC before Sumlin. They were irrelevant before him, yet they think they deserve to be a national championship contender "at times?" Unbelievable.

maybe he'll get a call from Tenn now that the Schiano talks have stalled. In all likelyhood he goes to ASU.

TAMU, careful what you wish for. They already had successful seasons, and now want to microwave a national champion. Let’s check back again in 2018 and 2019 to see if they are trending up or down.

Maybe my memory is failing me as I primarily follow the Big Ten and Notre Dame in college football but I don't remember A&M exactly being a powerhouse Big 12 program so I'm not sure why they would expect to move to the top football conference over the past 25 years and be an annual contender. Sounds like a mild case of delusion to me.

I believe their last good bowl win before Sumlin showed up was the Cotton Bowl in like 1987. So yes, they are delusional fans.

My son is a freshman there so I've seen a little of what it's like at TAMU. My perspective is from being a PU grad, lifelong PU fan and being to many games at Purdue and at other Big 10 campuses. Apparently, TAMU invested over $400M in their football program and they get very good recruits (over 1/2 their roster is 4* players, and an occasional 5* player). They have tremendous fan/student support and following. My wife and I were down there the weekend they played Alabama and game day was like nothing I had seen, even comparing to games at the Big House.

Are they being delusional? Perhaps, but it's the SEC, and most teams are thinking the same thing. It will be interesting to see how this pans out for them. One thing is for sure, there's money there for football, and high expectations.

Give them credit. They are not settling.

I see your point, but many of those highly ranked recruits came to TAMU because of Sumlin, not the school itself. It just joined SEC in 2012. I'd hardly call them a legitimate member, not just yet. Had they actually won an SEC championship even once, perhaps I might have understood. But they haven't once won a division yet. I see more delusion than ambition.

There is settling and then there is being realistic. I may be biased, but if TAMU thinks they can certainly be a national contender by firing the coach who actually took them to the prominence in the first place, they are mistaken.

I was on the faculty at A&M for five years and was there at the time that the school left the B12 for the SEC. I still know some people there and there are some additional issues with Sumlin:

(1) His wife wastes no time letting people know that she is Mrs. Head Coach and apparently has ruffled some feathers in Aggieland.

(2) Sumlin is often seen sipping from a styrofoam cup and has been rumored to be tipsy during a few practices.

This may all be BS but that's the rumors on campus.

Well if you're going to be an SEC school, you might as well get with the program of hiring and firing coaches on an semi annual basis.

Your only point I might take issue with is why those highly ranked recruits went to TAMU. One thing I've noticed about most (not all, but a large %) kids in Texas is they have one of two dream schools, instilled in them at an early age: either Texas or or Texas A&M. The Texas pride runs deep... This statement will be confirmed, or not, in the next week or so by how many of their verbals stick.

In A&M’s “proud” history, Kevin Sumlin compiled the second highest winning percentage among all their coaches. He’s never had a losing season.

Yeah, they can easily top that these days in the SEC.

Don’t kid yourselves about Texas kids. The ’horns hook most of ’em young. A&M isn’t the program sitting in the state capital with its own TV network. Sumlin and his staff recruited extremely well.

Just like Nebraska thinking nine wins per year weren’t enough -- and now they're 4-8 -- everyone soon will be laughing at the big-talk big-spenders who paid their second-best coach in history $10 million just to leave because he wasn’t winning big enough.

As they say in Texas, they’re all hat and no cattle.

It's redneck bullcrap.

Look at TAMUs recruiting rankings over the last 15 years: sizable uptick with Sumlin hire.

You might want to revisit the 90s under RC Slocum. T A&M beat KSU when they were #1. Slocum had the highest winning percentage of any Big 8/12/SWC conference coach, including the legendary Darrell Royal at Texas. Slocum was asked to resign the only time he finished below .500 in conference after the 2003 season. That's crazy!

Slocum was 78-28 in conference going toe to toe with Texas, Oklahoma and Nebraska.

I show him winning one Big 12 Championship in 1998. Still does not translate to what they say their expectations are in the SEC now.

Sumlin is a good coach but it's just the nature of the beast. Both and auburn and lsu fired coaches not too long ago who won a national championship.

Yes, he won the Big 12 in 98 and won 3 straight SWC championships 91-93. Won the Big 12 South in 97 and 98.

RC had the nations longest home winning streak in the 90s not losing at home from 89-95. The rip on Sumlin was the number of home losses. Something like 14 over the last 5 years.
