State of Basketball in Indiana

Yes. A lot of good programs. But why can't any of them recruit in-state? I'm sick of the 5 star kids that parade out of the state. I'm sure you guys are as well.
Can't help but think that it's the old thought that the grass is greener on the other side of the fence. In this case, out of state, while it's being seen this year that's not the case.

The DI universities in the state of Indiana have gone 29 years without a national title winning men's hoops team, with Butler making the most recent appearances in the title game. I can understand why top prospects go elsewhere and sometimes (ex's: Sean May and Tyler Zeller with UNC in 2005 and 2009, respectively) it works out very well for them. However, I do agree with the sentiment that coaches should be able to keep more of these top players within the state.

With the rising power and influence of AAU programs (and all the people connected with/to them) over the last 20-25 years, it's just tougher to do nowadays. What needs to happen is Purdue (or Butler or I guess Notre Dame or IU) needs to win a national championship and continue to be a strong program. Then we'll be able to see if that makes a difference.

Agree...if any one of these teams or couple get on a 2 or more year streak of final fours, then maybe you would see a change in belief amongst recruits. Some of these kids just want to get away from Indiana and see the world. They grew up with the State of Indiana basketball all their lives, and may just want to experience something different. It is quite a compliment that a state the size of Indiana is so well known for basketball and pumping out recruits year after year that everyone nation wide desire to recruit.

It's AAU. Kids play on a national level now when even 25 years ago I bet a kid played 95% of his games within his state and probably within 25-30 miles from home in most cases. That's all changed and it's never changing back unless AAU becomes so corrupt it gets outlawed.

I guess I thought last year we got the top 2 players from Indiana. Also had weatherford. I believe he was an Indiana all star. How soon we forget. I think some people just like to find things to complain about. I don't care where kids come from as long as they contribute in a positive way

Yep. My daughter played in AAU and HS team tournaments in ten states and she was never going to be a college player. Imagine what these top 150 kids are doing. Add the explosion of social media. The world is much much smaller now.

I was flipping through the ESPN channels last night and came across the HS games from New Castle. One team was from CA and one from VA. Right in the middle of HS season and these teams are traveling literally across the country to play. I know these two teams are basketball factories and not regular HS teams, but still that is ridiculous.

Two players in particular: One has attended 4 schools in 5 years, and the other this was his 3rd HS. We don't need to wonder why we have dysfunctional kids and transfers all over the place once they get to college. They can't even stay in one HS!

Old man rant is over now, please continue....

This. I don't get how people don't see this. The world is such a smaller place today than it was even 10 years ago. Everyone has a small computer in their pocket now and access to the world literally at their fingertips. It used to be that kids grew up seeing only a select few teams/games outside of their home state but they saw every IU and Purdue game on local tv. Now a kid in Indiana can watch every San Diego State game on cable and internet if he wants. They meet kids in AAU from all over the country and texting and social media means that they now stay in touch with those kids after they both return to their respective hometowns. These things have also made it far easier for coaches to compete for kids from long distances away. If Glenn Robinson went for 50 in a high school game, maybe only a couple of coaches that were in the gym knew about it that night and could stop by and congratulate him afterwards. If Romeo Langford goes for 50 it's on social media within minutes and the whole world knows it. He might have 30 text messages from all over the country congratulating him before he gets out of the shower. It used to be that an Indiana kid that left for college in California or North Carolina was pretty much leaving all his friends behind, and even much of his family to some extent. Not the case anymore with social media.

The elite recruits have every option available to them and programs have relatively equal access to them. Distance is barely a factor. We don't have much of an advantage recruiting a kid just because he is from Indiana anymore. Neither does IU, ND, Butler, or anyone else. I'd argue the same is true from Duke/UNC in North Carolina. They may still land many of the kids they want from home but that's probably because they are both viewed on that upper echelon and not because kids there are only willing to consider the top basketball programs within a 100 mile radius of them.

we can dream up all the bs excuses in the world. Win and they will come. It is that simple. If you don't win, they don't believe in you, and why should they? There's a reason the top programs with the top coaches generally get the top recruits. There's nothing wrong with Purdue. CMP just needs to win on the big stages. we can't lose the crossroads, the B1G tourney, flame out in the first round, and then cry about the recruits not coming here.

If you don't recognize the true reasons for an action it is much harder to change it. The question shouldn't be what we need to do to land the elite Indiana kids. The question should be what we need to do to land elite players period. The same forces that work against Indiana kids staying in place work for us as you move outside the state. We just have to provide the reasons for elite players to want to come here. FWIW, I think elite big men should be falling over themselves to come play for us because literally nowhere in the country will they see the same opportunity they will see here. When we have a good post player, we get them the ball. Not like Thomas Bryant at IU who I think I read got 4 shots total in their last 2 games. That's something tangible we can/should/do sell.

The grass has been greener out of state during the tournament... as for this year, that will be seen in March. Kids don't choose MSU, UNC, UK, etc.. over Purdue & IU because of what happens during the season, they choose them because they go to the FF.

Don't say it too loud though, otherwise people will call you are a CMP hater. :D
I've always says that once we starts winning in the NCAA tournament we will get our share of these players, until then...

IU has a lot of scorers and their is only 1 ball. Bryant has always received a decent amount of touches.
