I have a feeling Zico will be a starter, but unsure about the other two. I have a hard time believing Anthrop will be one of them. I watched Danny E catch him from behind on a long run in the spring game. He might have great hands, but lacks speed.

My gut is we'll have three WRs starting and 1 RB. The RB will be determined by the down and yardage. My gut says we won't have a huge 2 back power running game. We will have an air attack of 3000-3500 yards. Brohnm threw for over 4,000 yards in one season at Louisville. I think our offense will be much like Green Bay's. Brohm was there for three years losing out to some guy named Rogers. My money is on Zico and the ND transfer Holmes as two of the three. Holmes is making noise. he arrived late, but is learning fast, and showing he belongs. For the third WR, I'm not sure. We have some talented freshmen, and juco Wright. I believe the current depth chart is going to change dramatically and be filled with all newcomers. This isn't to slight our incumbent Wrs. But I'm very excited about ALL of the new WR recruits. More than any position, I'm excited about our entire WR core.

Brian Brohm sat behind Rodgers. Jeff Brohm (our head coach) played in west coast offenses in the pros

That's still the type of offense I expect to see in Gold and Black ! With 3 WRs and 1RB.

I agree. We dont have the o line to line up with 21 personnel and run the ball down the other team's throat.

I expect to see a lot more offense involving passing incorporating our running backs and tight ends more. We've never been known as being a smash mouth UW power running offense.

And as I look back, the success of UW was they had a plan, and went after players who fit their plan. UW recruited really huge offensive linemen, and their running backs were not the greatest, but they benefitted from running behind their offensive line. Their passing attack was marginal. But that was their style and plan. And they found the pieces to fit that plan.

Unlike Hazell and Hope and many other previous Purdue coaches, I believe Brohm also has a plan and he is securing players to fit that plan. It's not a matter of recruiting 4/5* players. It's a matter of recruiting players that fit your style of play. You could see it not only in the players he signed, but also in the players he recruited until the last second but lost out on. Brohm really wanted Yost(I believe that was his name) - the player who went to Louisville. And you could sense he wasn't that interested in the 4* linebacker/athlete who ended up going to Cincy.

And I see that plan emphasizing the use of WRs. Whether they start or not, I expect 3-4 WRs will be very productive. The key as always is how much time our offensive line can give the QB to throw the ball. Green Bay is known for its QB and WR core. But it's their offensive line that has enabled their offense to work. And looking back, when their offense has struggled, 1-2 of their offensive linemen were injured.

if we use a one back O, it'll be interesting to see how they keep all the backs happy.

I'm not saying we'll go strictly to a one back offense. but I think it will be at least half of our downs. that's true speculation on my part. I base it on the teams Brohm has played on and coached, but mostly on his recruiting targets. I believe recruiting is a reflection of a plan. In these past two classes for Brohm. recruiting RBs has almost been an afterthought. In the current class, the RB was almost his last athlete committed.

And look at last year's class. All we talk about are his transfers filling holes on the O and D lines, his DBs and WRs.

Admittedly, we have some very good RBs in Knox, Jones and Worship, but those guys are not going to be around forever, and the future under Brohm does not seem to be run oriented. his most talked about newcomers are WRs.

Something I admittedly don't know. Brohm signed some offensive linemen to fill holes. But are they known and more skilled as run oriented blockers? Or are they known as pass defenders/blockers - particularly the juco linemen? Something I do know is offensive linemen do have a reputation for being one of those two, but usually not both. A good indication of his plan would be to examine the type of offensive linemen he recruited. Is he more concerned about protecting the passer? or running over defensive linemen?

Jones and Lankford have the ability to split out...in one of the open practices, there was a backfield of Jones and Worship and could easily have BLJ there as well to slide out to the slot. That puts a lot of teams in a situation where you are either bringing the safety down to cover the slot (leaves one on one on the outside) or a LB to cover Jones/BLJ which easily puts Purdue at an advantage. Schematically speaking, Brohm will give us a chance in games we shouldn't be in...depth is the question.

You just made the case for Anthrop in your post. A receiver with great hands is exactly what we need.
Id rather have someone catch it and be caught from behind than a speedster burn a defender only to have it go through his hands.

I could see Anthony as a starter or playing significant time, if he can excel at getting open. Every team loves a receiver who can catch the ball. You need speed, and also route runners. Unfortunately, the past few years, our slower receivers were not able to fake out their defender to get open. they were either terrible getting off the line, or the defense knew our plays and was ready. it's nice to have a home run ball receiver, but it's even better to have that guy who can catch that 6 yard 3rd down pass in traffic for a first down. Every team needs a Gronk. and all he does is catch the pass. Eliminate the drops, and you eliminate the losses.

Love them or hate them, the Patriots are a great example to emulate for getting the most out of second tier receivers. They focus on quickness, agility, and route running instead of straight line speed. Most the the game is played within 10-15 yards of the line of scrimmage, especially in a spread offense. You really just need one or two pure speed guys to stretch the field. Of course it helps to have an accurate as hell QB delivering the ball.

Patriots are a model you cant reproduce unless you have another Belichick.

I saw a couple of comments and pictures of him making a couple of great catches in camp. and a lot of praise on vico.
