Sounds like

I don’t know him—he might be awesome but how disappointing??? We are the BIG, the only P5 opening, just won the West —and essentially the best we can do is what we did after the Hazel dumpster fire??? Why did we hire a firm?
Wash, rinse, repeat. Not impressed.
Pay better attention. Those who don't know about Tyson Helton, his dad, or his brother probably shouldn't be critical. Bobinski certainly knows more than you do.

Do tell, what do you know about him? Because if you look at his background, every head coach he worked for was fired, with the exception of Brohm. And I'm certain he didn't actually call the plays as Brohm's OC. English, Pruitt, his brother. All fired for not winning.

He was extremely mediocre at USC as both an OC and a HC. His only upside is that he worked for Kiffin...
He has some name recognition. He wouldn’t be the HC. Yeah, he has been around the Kiffin system. That would be a plus. He impressed the USC brass to get that job but he turned around and didn’t 😀.

When you have the talent that USC gets, and you can't win with that, you're not a very good coach...

Clay Helton is the head coach as GA Southern and is doing OK. He won't be leaving for an OC gig here.

There's a reason why he's at GA Southern...

Yes, because they were 3-9 last year and needed a coach. They went 6-6 this year and were definitely better. I don't want Clay Helton as the HC here at Purdue but we could definitely do worse OC wise and hes not coming here to be OC so you can sleep soundly.

More in the lines of he couldn't win with all of the talent around him in Southern California...

4-8 is a dumpster fire at USC...

We need a staff that can recruit. The overall talent of the roster needs to go up.
This is one of the reasons I'm not excited by the prospect of Helton. I haven't read anything about how good of a recruiter he is, and I can't imagine he'd instill a ton of excitement around the program/with recruits.

Georgia Southern has a pretty strong football tradition for a non-flagship university. Hard to judge the guy based on one year, but a three-win turnaround in one year is nothing to sneeze at.

Not judging either way, but he'll be interesting to watch.

My point was that he was 4-8 at USC, where basically you have to try to not recruit and you still get top players. You can't win in that environment and you're not really all that good.

He may be fine at GA Southern. But that's a different animal...

Give me Shephard instead of Helton. Helton is a backward hire. Still prefer someone with a head coaching experience but Helton would be a plan C/D hire. Give me Klieman, Mullen etc. I'm willing to wait and get the right hire than settling.

This is so important and think it gets overlooked to much here. It's exactly why Colorado hired Deion. Bring kids in to talk to Deion and then they see that stadium and they're sold. Purdue needs some coaches that can get kids in and sell them on the school.

I’m just wondering. We formed a committee to hire Hazell. We formed another committee to hire Brohm. And now, once again we’re forming another committee! Doesn’t our AD have the knowledge and balls to make his own decisions?

Did Louisville form a committee to decide to hire Brohm? Did Cincy form a committee? Did Nebraska or UW form a committee? Did Auburn?

Do we really need the inputs and review of 6 people to make a decision?

The committee is mostly to keep leaks from happening, I do believe

As I look at a committee the bigger it is, the more potential you have for leeks. If you have the AD making the decision alone, there are only two people who would know. The coach and the ad. And yes the agent and guy to draw up the contract as well.

I'd be shocked if any AD ever makes a decision of this magnitude on his or her own. There is undoubtedly a search committee of some kind.

Did Louisville have a committee?
I'm sure they did. Public universities have to follow certain hiring procedures. In this case, it's probably true that everybody understood the direction the search was going to take.

And every body at Purdue knew this was going to happen and
Should have already had a name and direction when it happened

Beamer seems unrealistic, but there is some weird crap going on down there. I really don’t want to be Walters’ first HC job.
