it's a shame... he played really well his freshman year and went downhill from there.

I expected him to be a sixth man who provides a nice spark off the bench.

Sounds like he couldn't lay off the weed.

Disappointing, but not surprising.

Next man up is.. Eifert? Hope Matt starts getting him some PT in case we have foul trouble in the BTT or NCAAT. And let's all say a prayer for VE's back.

First saw Basil when he was a freshman in high school playing varsity against my son's team. Extremely gifted athlete. Was always hoping he would turn into a Drake Morris type player, but he never developed the basketball skills to do so. Hope he gets things straightened out and wish him well.

Matt needs to get on the recruiting trail asap. If somebody gets injured, Haarms will have to come off of redshirt.

Speculation on my part, but 3rd strike perhaps? Only thing I can think of for this happening now and the way it is happening.

Edit: Based on Painter's comments it appears like others pointed out, he did something stupid:

“There are standards and expectations that our student-athletes must follow and Basil has not met these guidelines. We have mutually agreed the best route for him is to no longer be a member of our squad,” Painter said.

Basil must have done something really stupid if Painter is announcing this on a Sunday morning while the team is at an away game.
Well, if he wasn't traveling with the team, then he had to as a pre-emptive to the obvious questions that would surface today.

I hope he sorts it all out and it's nothing more than immaturity, eg partying too much. Hate to see him go, and had been pulling for him after seeing those videos where Bas spoke of trying to improve his defense From that perspective, I'm surprised to see this announced today despite Basils obvious problems lately (dog house).

On he other hand, glad that Painter holds our players accountable for their actions, formally suspended, (internally) suspended and strike three(?), he gone.

Wasn't Painter strongly looking at Sasha Stefanovic, but he was not sure if he would have a scholarship for next year? I guess we would now. Zachary Gunn is still uncommitted and will probably be an IN HS All Star. Is he a possibility for next year?

Weed would account for weight gain and for his "mellowness" on the bench. Not saying it was, just noting the things already noticed by others. Very sorry that he couldn't meet Painter's expectations as to team rules. Sorry too that he had to be dismissed from team.

I thought this same thing. It is unfortunate, but it frees up a scholarship for Sasha. This may end up being a very good thing.

Damn. I'm bummed. Didn't want it to end like this. Best of luck to him. Hopefully he graduates this spring and can be a grad transfer somewhere as he already used his redshirt year.

Smotherman always seemed like a good prospect and teammate. Always seemed to have a convincingly better player in front of him in the depth chart.

Somewhere he seemed to have lost focus and effort. Too bad he didn't use his redshirt year like most would have hoped.

I'm truly sorry for Basil. I have a kid who took too many years to get life figured out, but he finally did. At least Basil wasn't at Kansas. And yes, props to Painter. Didn't fly off too soon, gave him a chance or two, and didn't wait to pull the trigger when it was time to... well done.

Huge red flag was the weight gain and lack of discipline during his RS year. Many on here down played it and in fact took shots at those pointing it out (weight gain). Looks like the concerns were warranted after all.

Next man up! Wasn't like he was playing much anyways. Not trying to judge but from my view the kid always used to be jumping around and happy but lately seemed like he hardly got his butt off the bench and always had his shirt in his mouth while sitting on the bench.

Time to go get Sasha and Epperson Coach Paint!!!
Sasha can shoot lights out. He's our next Dakota/Cline.

Agree. Coach P should give Eifert a shot at serious minutes outside of garbage time. I've been impressed with him in the games he has played so far this year.

Go Purdue!

It's slight counterintuitive, but I wouldn't put weight gain on weed. I always gained a crap ton more weight in periods where I drank a lot than when I smoked out on a regular basis. Think about it: you have 8 beers and then hit the taco bell on the way home. You made a poor food choice and consumed 1200 liquid calories in the beer. Scenario 2 you smoke out and split a pizza. You made a poor food choice without the alcohol calories. Either way he was making poor food choices compared to his front court counter part, Mr "my favorite food is spinach and grilled chicken salad." I just hope he gets his degree at Purdue or somewhere else. It is getting tough out there for people without a bachelor's. Hell I will probably need a master's by the end of my career.

Great in theory, but no so much realistically unfortunately.
Yes realistically it is. Basil averaged 3.9 PPG 1.7 RPG and 0.8 APG. I know you ant-Painter people like to over-exaggerate things, but those are basically walk-on numbers. I'm sad to see Basil go, but his contributions are easily covered.

Have to agree with DG10 here. His averages are so low because he plays so little. But if we run into a game where we need those minutes to be 20 instead of 2 then we just got weaker by this. Not playing the blame game on anyone but that's just how it is.

Big difference...he was not a walk-on...while he may not have produced (and, your stats cited are far more a reflection of the lack of minutes than actual ability to produce), he was capable of doing so. The fact that he didn't is on him...but he at least had the ability to do so and has shown as much multiple times in the past.

It has nothing at all do with being anti- or pro-Painter...Basil's problems are strictly a result of Basil's actions (or, inaction)...and, I am confident that his contributions are not nearly as easily covered as you like to suggest and would like others to believe...if they were, then whoever is going to cover them would have already been doing so.

I'm actually more worried about the state of the team than anything else right now. Meaning drama is never good and while he didn't play much, he still seemed to get along with the rest of the team and losing a friend like this might be a big distraction today. Especially with being on the road and having no time to "deal with it" as it were.

Yeah - we have no margin for error at all now, for injuries, foul trouble, etc.

Maybe the team will rally around a lost comrade. Win one for the Gipper...er the Smotherman!

If Eifert ever plays meaningful minutes, Purdue is screwed. He is not even close to a serviceable D1 player. In extreme emergency, I hope Taylor is available.

Sasha is shooting a pretty pedestrian 39% from 3 in hs this year. Not so great for being able to "shoot the lights out". I'm not sold yet.

Uhhhhhhh. This has to be a joke.

Stinks that he couldn't have more success here. I kept waiting for him to be a consistent factor. Without knowing for sure but from the eye of a fan it seemed Basil was pretty well-liked on the team. That could hurt some morale but I don't think it will unless the decision was overly unfair (and I doubt it was). This team seems more mature than some in the past so I think they will wish him the best but move on and take it for what it is. I think Biggie would stay on the court the whole game if it was his decision. If we get into one of those games where we are in huge foul trouble, that's when it will hurt. Hopefully our injuries that have been noted don't make us say what-if.

For recruiting, we have a history with the 5th year graduate player so we may go that route again. I think we'll be attractive for the right player since there could be minutes seen and dangled.
