Smotherman gone

Yeah - we have no margin for error at all now, for injuries, foul trouble, etc.
7 is the minimum needed to contribute and Purdue has 8 scholarship players in the rotation, before having to go to Eifert. The two players that Painter most needs to stay healthy are Swanigan and Haas. Vince Edwards being out would also be a big blow, but I'd much rather go small at the 4 than ask Vince to play the 5.

Yes realistically it is. Basil averaged 3.9 PPG 1.7 RPG and 0.8 APG. I know you ant-Painter people like to over-exaggerate things, but those are basically walk-on numbers. I'm sad to see Basil go, but his contributions are easily covered.
Do averages/minute and you have a different outcome. Yes, there is no perfect way to evaluate.

I can't say that I'm surprised, with his minutes dropping (and some DNP) over the last 5-10 games. I figured that he would transfer out at the end of the season anyway but he now he won't even get to play out the rest of the season.

Maybe he failed a random drug test, which would be a no-no after his arrest last summer. He can go goof around with Kendall Stephens and they work just enough to be mediocre at Nevada, as long as they "look cool" (i.e. Stephens) doing it.

First saw Basil when he was a freshman in high school playing varsity against my son's team. Extremely gifted athlete. Was always hoping he would turn into a Drake Morris type player, but he never developed the basketball skills to do so. Hope he gets things straightened out and wish him well.
Funny you should mention Drake Morris as a comparison. There were rumors he smoked a lot of weed and even showed up high for games when I was at Purdue. Have no idea if true, but Schaus wasn't much of a disciplinarian.

First he needs to focus on graduating so that he can play next season.

Yes and it was also the one that most people here liked most. Just goes to show that rankings aren't everything.

I'm not sure who you are speaking of, but of recent classes, I always thought the 2012 and 2014 classes were superior to the 2013 class.

I'd also say that was the only bad class out of the last five.

2012 - AJ and Davis
2013 - Bryson Kendall Basil
2014 - PJ Dakota Vince Isaac
2015 - Caleb and Cline
2016 - Carsen
There was a time when Willis was also committed that it looked like a GREAT class. There was also a time before Vince Edwards committed that the 2014 class looked like a bust to many. It just shows that perspective changes over time.

Don't know anyone in particular but the expectations people had for 2013 always seemed highest to me. People had Kendall scheduled for Purdue's all-time three point leader halfway through his freshman season and many spoke of the NBA. Bryson was argued by some to be the top player coming out of the state in that class and Basil's athleticism and early ranking seemed to keep expectations high for him. I'm sure there is much backtracking at this point but I was here and I remember.

Mathias was already committed before VE, so they at least had someone on board. I think's there's a difference between being concerned about how well the recruiting is going vs. thinking a class is going to be "a bust".

Many were convinced it was a bust. Not everyone was excited about Dakota committing. Many thought that Edwards would certainly choose Michigan as well. I'm not saying that you were one of them.

Don't know what Grady can do in meaningful minutes, but I have liked what he has done for the limited time he has participated.

Huge red flag was the weight gain and lack of discipline during his RS year. Many on here down played it and in fact took shots at those pointing it out (weight gain). Looks like the concerns were warranted after all.

Have no idea what happened. I think one of the more interesting 'news' that came out about college athletics was the study about attitudes of college athletes - and basically how delusional people are about how they think they'll be playing professionally - many of these kids come in as big time high school players. Obviously there's probably times for many of these people when they realize they probably won't be. I wonder if with Basil's redshirt year, he had kind of come to that realization and he didn't take it as seriously.

The hope is that people will try hard whether they'll be able to go pro or not - and that's probably one of the great things about college sport is the effort. But I can also see how people can lose that motivation to give so much time.

Of course, this is me just talking, but I hope he starts making better decisions and has a successful remainder to his college career.

One of those things us Average Joes will never understand.. how any player with D1 talent given the opportunity to play D1 ball could possibly not give 110% at all times and be completely sold out to being your best. If only they all had the work ethic of Biggie. Can you imagine?

And 2012 was the only good class out of 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, and 2013.

Weed would account for weight gain and for his "mellowness" on the bench. Not saying it was, just noting the things already noticed by others. Very sorry that he couldn't meet Painter's expectations as to team rules. Sorry too that he had to be dismissed from team.
Are you aware that a lot of NBA players toke up during the season and some before games?

I got my son's picture as a 3 or 4 year old with Smotherman, Scott and Stephens at the alumni game before they officially set foot on campus. I remember telling him "This is the class that's going to help turn things around". Yeah, about that...
