Singleton to Northwestern

Really was hoping he’d become a boiler! He’s gonna be a good player!
Someone needs to check in on oldboiler to make sure they’re ok!

This does sting a bit, but rumored (posted on here) his dad wanted NU and also he wanted to play right away (can’t blame him)…not sure he was going to play a ton next year but good luck to him. Not sure how good NU will be over his career but we shall see!

Next up…Burgess

Wonder where we sit with SWA? I don’t know Northwestern’s lineup and depth but think it will be a dogfight to get minutes next season.

Well lookin roughly at their roster now, they will have 2-3 Forwards back next year (not sure if one is a walk on/wont really play much). Then they add singleton and the other forward that just committed. So, I think it’s easier for him to see time there and could play a lot.

They have a lot of their core leaving this year (Barnhizer, Nicholson, Berry) and not a lot for the next year. So unless they hit the portal and knock it out of the park, it could be a rough one next year.

Good post. It does hurt to miss out on a guy that was an 'A list' priority, particularly when we didn't land Sisley and SWA seems like a longshot at best.

Agree that it's hard to fault the kid when he and his family's stated priorities are early playing time and education.

It’s not the biggest deal considering what we have on our roster, but it is a bit odd that we’re missing on our priority guys despite coming off a national championship appearance.
Eh I dunno. We loaded up on the 24 class and got everyone we wanted and even more. I think guys see that they aren’t going to play right away (singleton, Mullins, Sisley) or guaranteed mins. And I understand that kids want to play right away, especially if they have been told they’re a top “xx” recruit. If the portal didn’t exist then I’d agree, but it does so we will be ok if we don’t sign anyone for 25.

And I’ll tell ya right now, I’d take any of the guys on the team over the “priority guys” for next year.

Agree. I would have liked to land Tre but Cam is roughly the same size (an inch shorter and 10 pounds lighter) and I have a hard time seeing Tre being a better player than Cam over the next couple of years. I could be wrong, but I think the downside comes when Cam graduates, and you don't have a four with guard skills to pair with Burgess, DJ, etc.

I wasted so much time on him from a video watching standpoint. I didn't see NW as a contender I suppose you can teach an old dog new tricks. This kid is legit he struggled some with his quick growth but has clearly grown into his 6'8 frame. We lost the best of the 2025's wings for me.

I think you're probably right, although I'd happily take SWA if by some wild stretch, we happen to land him. I'm confident that MP will figure it out but Purdue is in an interesting position right now where they have the sort of depth that you'd typically see in an elite program but doesn't have the sort of recruiting pull that a UNC, KU, etc. has.

There's almost zero chance that Painter goes into the portal for anything other than a one-year, experienced role-player type guy. Maybe another Lance Jones if we're lucky.

But Painter is gonna roll with the guys he brings in, for good or ill, until that stops working

That assumes that all impactful players come back next season. If we have a key player go pro or otherwise leave all bets are off.

it appears all the elite players Painter was recruiting this year wanted some type of guaranteed playing time verses playing for a winner. Making the final 4 did nothing to improve our recruiting. in the end, the players wanted a chance to showcase their talents. and that's something Purdue and Painter could not offer.

I guess we had better hope the players we signed last year are better than the ones we missed out on this year.

How do you know? Did you have Edey pegged as a 2x NPOTY and NBA lottery pick when he committed?

The true test of recruiting is not in the rankings coming in. Then again you were just blabbering in a football thread about how wins is all that matter and then you make a comment like this here.

So, let’s play your game. Do you think the top recruits want to play right away or are ok with sitting/coming off the bench? I assume you’d say “play right away”. Ok, so if they play right away, then they will either start or consume a lot of mins. That pushes previous starters and players who were going to start to the bench.

Now, you’re always the one that states “players will leave if they don’t start”, right? That’s you, correct? …so, with your logic, we are at a conundrum aren’t we? Do you bet your future on unproven freshman and let your better players who now wont start because of these top recruits, walk? Or do you allow the players you have developed, start…and let the “top recruits” go to another program?

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, the only player that might have played right away, was Haralson. Other than that, I’d take every player on this team, including the class of 2024 over all other “top recruits”, who will have spent 1 year in painters system.

So, please tell me how you would have recruited the top talent?
