I see there is already a post about Hazell's recent hypothetical on Sindelar, but I don't think it is possible to understate the flawed and negligent thinking involved with statement. Not only is this an asinine decision for Hazell to make, but if Morgan Burke allows this to happen, it would shows an even higher degree of negligence on his part. Hazell has already sealed his and Burke's fate, but this type of decision making shows a desire to purposefully damage the chances of their successors.

There is no way a highly talented and competitive kid like Sindelar is going to say no to his coach when this option is presented to him. This is very similar to Hazell's handling of Bentley's ACL tear, which is equally as concerning. It is the duty and obligation of the coach and AD to provide seasoned guidance to any player in this situation. Hazell/Burke are simply failing Sindelar if their guidance includes even the entertaining of this as an option. Lumping Bentley into this, you can clearly see a pattern of coaches/AD putting their own interests ahead of the player and program.

If IU wins this weekends game, Sindelar plays a single snap, and Hazell is brought back as coach next year, Burke should be permanently barred from Purdue's campus.

This seems like kind of an over-reaction to me. For starters, DH is the coach and coaches should have full authority over who plays and who doesn't (save for any medical issues which a doctor would rule on). Do you really want the guy Tiller called "not a football guy" setting your lineup each week?!

Secondly, contrary to the fact that everyone wants him fired, Hazell wants to come back, and Burke has stated that is happening. It is possible that he makes strides next year, gets extended, and is still the coach well after Sindelar is gone. The point being, if Hazell is hurting anybody from a coaching standpoint, that "anybody" may very well be himself!

And lastly, Sindelar isn't handcuffed to Purdue in any off-season. There's no guarantee he's still going to be at Purdue next year or the following year anyway (or the following year, or the following year). And 3 years from now, he might not be the best QB on the team even if he is still there.

Firstly, there is a colossal difference between the AD setting the lineup and the AD stepping in when a coach is openly making a decision that is against the long term interest of an individual and/or program. The bucket game means nothing as it relates to Hazell's future or Burke's for that matter. It would however cost Sindelar a precious year of eligibility that he cannot get back. I consider that reckless and justifiable of an AD stepping in. This also has nothing to do with line-ups as we are talking about emergency back-up plans, which Hazell has plenty of time to prepare for.

Secondly, of course Hazell wants to come back. Do you think he is going to walk away from the best job he will ever have? Hazell's legacy is already written in stone. First year he got a free pass. Second year brought massive doubt in his abilities. Third year solidified the fact that Hazell has no business being a coach in the Big Ten. There are no jurors still out. He is an indefensible failure and has lost any good faith he had in rebuilding this program. At this point the only thing that can be done is to minimize the damage already levied on his and Burke's replacement.

Lastly, Sindelar not being handcuffed is irrelevant. His eligibility would be impactful to him regardless of how his football career pans out. If your son was a high level B10 athlete, would you want him to lose an entire year of eligibility for one meaningless game? I think not.

Exactly and what little respect I had left for Hazell is gone with his comments. He would have earned some respect back if he came out and said this is an important game, we want to win it, and we will do everything we can to win it EXCEPT lose a year of eligibility for SIndelar.

I don't know why this is a surprise to anyone. He did the same thing with Etling (and it was not because of injury). There was more than 1 game left in the season, but the season was well in the bag and he threw Etling to the wolves with no offensive line and the meat of a Big Ten schedule.
