Selection Sunday thread

North Carolina and Texas get the nod over Indiana - didn't expect that.
I'm not really surprised with Texas. They're flawed but have 7 Quad 1 wins---more than UNC, Indiana, and Xavier combined.

UNC went 1-11 v. Quad 1, but did play a top-10 non-conference schedule.

What I don't get is Xavier: 1-9 v. Quad 1, and a non-conference SOS in the 200s.

Good points, rgarlitz. Yeah - wasn't shocked. Bottom line is for all the bubble teams, you're at the mercy of some metrics over others and separating electrons.......so, you have to remove all doubt if you can or rely upon a roll of the dice.

High Point - Net #82
They played 1 Quad 2 game all year and zero quad 1 games. Really hard to evaluate a team that plays a schedule like that.
Well clearly they can score. And clearly we have been playing some of the worst defense in the country.

So here's hoping Paint and crew spend a whole lot of time working on defense this week.

My results....disregarding my late flip of Michigan and Purdue - to give myself the original benefit of the doubt.

66/68 - Missed IU and West Virginia (for Texas and UNC). Indiana was my last in and UNC first out FWIW
44 at correct seed
19 one away
1 (oklahoma) 2 away
2 (Memphis and Louisville) 3 away

Not my best work

Well, at least you did it. I just like to criticize how other people do it.

No argument we need to play better defense and hit open shots to beat any decent team.

My point was, it's really hard to evaluate anything with a team that plays that schedule. No point of reference against known teams. Doesn't mean they can't beat us, just hard to measure how good they really are.

I hope the players and coaches saw what Seth Davis said. Post it in the locker room and use it as motivation to blow High Point out.

If you told me 48 hours ago, that Purdue had a puncher’s chance to get to play in Indy the 2nd weekend, I would not have believed. The team needs to recharge, regroup, refocus, practice defense and read all the negative predictions about them, here and nationally. Then prove everyone wrong.

Nicely done in regards to Purdue’s first two rounds bracket, you got 3 of the 4. Let’s be honest, Purdue got an excellent draw really, they got 2 winneable games and than would likely face Houston the most beatable 1 seed in Indy. I think Purdue loses in the second round but if they get there I would guess they might be a small favorite. Auburn got a terrible draw for being #1 overall, playing sort of a road game against potentially Louisville is a hard as hell second round game.

Maybe that was the return favor for #8-seed Auburn getting to play #1-seed Houston in Birmingham two seasons ago....payback time! Haha.

Providence on TH it is......#4 in the Midwest to face #13 High Point. Clemson #5/#12 McNeese winner IF Purdue advances to Sat. All in all, could have been worse as a draw but will be a challenge either way.
just to nuance this a bit more correctly and I never correct you because you are rarely incorrect...but it isn't a draw (and I know others use that wording). They are pairing teams as they desire

Point well taken, TJ and appreciate the indulgence for any colloquial use. Been incorrect plenty and it won't be the last time.

FWIW and my feelings are not hurt, but I wonder if there are 50 teams better than IU at this time?
Trying to look at it objectively, I don't think Xavier is better than Indiana. But, I hear you. I won't be losing any sleep over the Hoosiers being left out.

I’m not following what you’re saying.
You always ask how to measure what something or someone is worth. IU spent $6-$8M and I’m saying that it definitely was not worth it to spend that much just to turn down the NIT and miss the tournament for the 7th time in 9 years 😂 😂

My2 cents - unless we are a bubble team that needs to win the BTT, we should play walk-ons and scrubs. Committee showed that Saturday and Sunday didn’t matter.

As a coach or AD, I would never turn down a chance at competition. I can understand IU not being happy, but you don’t turn down a chance to play in the NIT. That’s kind of like a football team turning down a bowl bid just because it wasn’t one of the major playoff bowls. To play in Madison square garden in the finals is an opportunity of a lifetime.

I’m happy for UNC and Texas. I don’t really care about Xavier getting in over IU. I thought Michigan was more deserving of the 4 than Purdue. I’m unsure if Michigan got a better 4/5 matchup. Being a 6th seed and playing at Milwaukee would not have been bad.

I’m unsure where you would want the better home court advantage. The first round or the second round. Would it have been better to play in Milwaukee for the first two games or Indy for the next two games? My thought is if you can’t beat the 13th seed on the road you shouldn’t be playing in the tourney.

Clemson will be an interesting opponent. I don’t know much about them. But they have played some tough conference opponents.

Yeah the only things that mattered today were whether George Mason or UAB were going to win.
I’m really glad Painter let Braden play 40 minutes and put Fletcher back in with his injured elbow...

Anyways, this is why expanding and having our tournament run so late is stupid.

A$ we know, expan$ion wa$ primarily a football move, Beef......but totally agree that it wreak$ havoc on the ba$ketball $chedule for imbalance and Ea$t/We$t travel. Big Ten apparently like$ that late $unday $pot leading into the tournament $election $how....but it ha$ made the re$ult a non-factor other than the identity of the automatic qualifier bid.
