I hope that Harper is OK. I hope that he plays. I think that he will. I believe that Purdue will beat Rutgers on Sunday. We will be watching as I live in a mixed-marriage household (Purdue/Rutgers alums.)

I want him to play. That way we know what we are getting and what to expect. We have a game plan for Harper (it might not be a good one). If he doesn't play, some bench player, who we don't have a game plan for, will come in and drop 20+ on us.

Iowa at Mackey without Keegan Murray
Illinois with Kofi in foul trouble in Champaign
Indinia with Jackson-Davis in foul trouble
Maryland without Ayala
Two of those are not like the others. Getting big men in foul trouble is a feature of our offense. We fed the ball into monsters down low, and the hope is an easy bucket or the defender having to foul.

This is similar to a slasher drawing fouls. That guy's quickness and explosiveness forces the defense to foul or give up a lay up.

You are right, and, I was not trying to make the point that they were...just making the point that those games changed in light of what happened in that regard...those "best players" were largely irrelevant (especially Jackson-Davis), and, it backfired on Purdue.

Just going to the overall point that Purdue has not had the success one would hope for if not expect in playing an opponent without (or largely without) their best player.

So true and tired of other fan bases using it like it's not part of the game. If you get other bigs into foul trouble , that is to our advantage on recruiting those bigs.

Could not agree more, however, to the point of another thread on the topic, Purdue is not being rewarded as they had been in more recent games...a clear change in how things had been/were being called...taking away said advantage that Purdue had indeed recruited for and worked to establish.

Edey was mauled on every possession of the northwestern game. Same crap every year. I'm honestly not sure if it's actually an advantage to have a huge center anymore since college refs seemingly have no interest in learning how to officiate those types of games.

It definitely has to be a consideration given what is happening.

Painter has made it a priority, and, in theory...nothing at all wrong with it for the most part, but, it is not the advantage that it was believed to be or that it should be with how they are now calling it unfortunately.

Refs missing calls is one things...sucks certainly, but, it happens...ignoring calls is something different (and more) though...and, that is what is happening in the case of Edey.

It changes things dramatically for Purdue as well...more so when they compound it (as they did in Ann Arbor) with calling weak fouls ON him. Purdue is fortunate in that regard to still have Williams, but, it is not the same and it still just changes things.

And it only gets worse in March. Year after year proves that Big Ten play is somewhat insulated from the rest of the country and that nationally the NCAA officiating favors guard play. No coincidence our best tournament run in recent history was with our best guard play. If this team goes deep into March it will be due to Ivey balling out, good Hunter continuing to show up, and Sasha and Thompson hitting open shots. It won't be due to Tredey dominating and taking over games.

Yes, I totally agree with you. I saw Zach's interview on how upset and frustrated he can get with the no calls too.

You will probably think this is lame, but I always pray, that if the refs are gonna cost us on the " no calls" on our bigs, that something happens where the other team just goes cold in an area to give us the win fairly .

This post is incredibly on point. Well put. IMO, the outcome of the Rutgers game will depend on how the refs manage guard play. The concern about foul disparity at the center position is moot. Rutgers starts 5 players who are 6'6" *and* can handle the rock. If they are allowed to be overtly physical, it will be a long day for us.

To win this game it is imperative to get at least one of their guards in foul trouble. Consider this... if Omoruyi gets in foul trouble, Rutgers will be forced to play "small". That seldom works out in our favor. Isaiah and Eric are going to have to play aggressive and remain so for the entire game.

I will take Purdue by double digits if they force Rutgers to play small.

I have felt this way for over a decade ... it is glaringly obvious that B1F teams have spent the three prior months with very different officiating.

Very few players can hit a 3 and also have the size/length to bother our 5’s. Rutgers doesn’t have anyone who can do it. Their bigs are interior players. Their starting 5 gives them their best matchup vs our bigs. He’s good, but is not a stretch guy.

Rutgers has a big mismatch for us in Harper. I think you need a big guard who can muscle him up. Hard to put a forward on Harper. Rutgers also has some length at the guard spot with some other guys that could cause some issues.

Cliff has a good 15 footer and Reiber the backup 5 can shoot the 3.

Reiber is a skilled big but he does t have the size to bang always down low so he will likely struggle. If Cliff gets in foul trouble RU is in big trouble. Walk on Luke Nathan even got on the court to try to stop Edey bc he is the only one with enough size to hold his ground outside Cliff.

As for Harper, it's the opposite. Ron abuses smaller players and struggles against bigger longer defenders. No one even tries a guard on Harper. It won't work. He's too strong

When we guarded Harper with a forward, he torched us from 3. We don’t have a guy who is 6’8” and is really quick. I think we all agree he’s a tough matchup.

Purdue would love for their 5 to shoot jumpshots all day. They don’t have a real threat at 5 like Liddell/HD. Edey isn’t bothered much on D unless he has to go out to the 3 point line.

Ron and Paul are both tough matchups

Well Edey will have to guard Dean THREEIBER as he is being called for his recent 3 point shot but last game Edey walked Dean under the rim making him look like a 6th grader playing the varsity center

I think our gameplan will be let the bigs go one on one mostly with surprise hard fast digs on the dribble. Stay on Sasha. Let Caleb slow down Ivey. Caleb has been phenomenal this season and is in the running for DPOY. He will be ready for Ivey knowing a good showing could seal the award

Of course. Very tough matchups. I think Purdue is in great shape if we don’t allow Rutgers to go crazy from 3. Rebounding and TO’s are always key for us. We don’t allow easy buckets and I like our chances.
