Prior to the signing event Wednesday, Coach Hazell had a neat list of recruiting tiddbits, I really like the 18 team captains, we should have some good team leadership coming from quality kids. That amount of schools visited is mind blowing. Coach had a lot of the "in the trenches" folks that put this together stand up and take a bow, which is appropriate.

12. 18 Team Captains

11. 927 kids attended Purdue Football Camps leading to 6 signees.

10. Signees from 11 different states and 2 countries (OH/CA/IN/KY/FL/MI/GA/NC/LA/TX/TN/MD)

9. 11 of 12 signees from the State of Purdue

8. 12 of 25 signees were committed prior to their senior year.

7. 13 total State Championships

6. Coaches stayed in hotels 521 combined nights

5. Over 33 MILES of total offensive yards in this recruiting class.

4. 176 Unofficial Visit tours

3. 1,602 schools visited during this recruiting cycle

2. Evaluated 3,071 potential prospects leading to Signing Day

1. 16,800+ handwritten letters

I think Markell Jones accounts for 31 miles in number 5

While I have no problem with the 18 team captains stat, as was pointed out last year, he really likes this stat and usually it's meaningless. With the number of high schools and the number of players that get D-1 scholarships out of those high schools you're going to have to one of the best if not the best player on your high school team to get a scholarship, and that usually means you are also a captain. I think last year almost every kid was a captain. I'd bet going back several classes that might be the case.

Yup.

I get what hes saying about leadership, and largely agree with Haz when he talks around this.

But pointing out we are signing captains like it actually measures character is ridiculous, and sets the bar meaninglessly low.

Why are you so mad at every damn little thing he says?

The fact is, we got better and deeper moving from year 1 to 2. It wasn't a lot, but it was growth. The fools gold is the false thought that this program was going anywhere immediately after Tiller left. If we get a new OC, I think we can turn this ship around. If we don't....Hazell is gone and you don't have to cry anymore! Its a win-win! Sit back, enjoy the ride and stop riding this coaches ass so hard!

I don't think boiler17 is "mad at everything he says", however, "coach" hazell wants to put lipstick on Rosanne Bar and then try and convince us she's a super model. Mature, intelligent fans (i.e...sophisticated fans) aren't fooled by his BS.

While I do agree long term its a win/win, I dont see the particular one you outline.

I'm really not mad. Just way too into Purdue Football, and he doesnt give me anything positive to talk about. If he did, I'd talk about that. When the team plays good, I will talk about that too.

I also wouldnt call last year progress. It was better, but nothing significant to build upon imo. More like variation of a 2 win mean. The absense of truely terrible performances isnt the same as good performances.

Its nothing personal or said in outrage, the captains thing is just a ridiculous thing to point to. How many p5 schools couldnt say what he says? And the part where he makes Purdue look dumb, that part sucks too. Dude has made us the punch line of jokes. I will say his puffy cheeks and good posture make him adoreable in a stuffed animal kind of way. Oh, and I do appreciate that he doesnt say ummm all the time. Many coaches do that and its tacky.

Or if I want to be snarky, I say for the same reason you ride the guy that hasnt been here for 2 and some years. Bashing that guy is sooooo 2012.

Remember around half way though the season when we were turning the corner and Appleby was getting compared to Andrew Luck? Thats the most fun Ive had in 2 years!!

Boiler17 for you to be a such die hard football fan of Purdue it boggles my mind how you did not see serious progress from 2013. Go watch the tape of 2013. You must of forgot what a embarrassing season that was. Loads of improvement. Unfortunately weren't able to pull off a few wins. You seem to be extremely hot and cold on your feelings and opinions on purdue football

2013 was largely on hazell. He was learning purdue wasn't OSU and that you can't pound the ball with a roster built for the spread.

2013 should not have happened. 2014 was not much better as that was a team capable of a bowl game, but left wins on the field

Exactly. Then he figures it out half way through, and switches too late. Since Etling took over, the team looks largely the same to me through the last 18ish games.

I get its kind of splitting hairs/semantics to not call it progress. Im calling it random deviation of a low mean.

For example, they will predictably go all the way through the fall without a starter named, split reps nearly evenly, and put a way too simplistic offense on the field to start the year with a D that caves in instead of leading when the rest of the team struggles. Too much pressure gets put on the QB to be super accurate, the staff moves to younger guys/the bench, and it will look just like most of his time here.

If he puts a non terrible offense out, and the D gets progressively less prone to giving in, it will have been progress, and I will be wrong.

"ANYONE" who believes what the man says is unsophisticated? Revealing comment...

A sophisticated IU fan is a fan that uses a drink koozie during a tailgate.

What does a sophisticated Purdue fan look like?

Re: Recruiting factoids the most significant factoid...

unfortunately is 14th out of 14 in the BT. I realize the pundits can be wrong but I have heard that bs before with Hope, Tiller, Akers, Burtnett, etc. and it seems that good recruits = good results and poor recruits = poor results. I guess time will tell but if next year is not at least 500 performance, we need to embark in a different direction or join the MAC.

Sorry your feelings are hurt by my using the phrase "sophisticated fans"....how about this "mature, intelligent fans" (It means the same thing)....feel better?

What does this fact mean???

11 of 12 signees from state of purdue.

the stat before it seems to contradict it.

No hurt feelings... Just wondering the perspective of someone who can judge that others are unsophisticated. No one's opinions on this board are considered inferior to mine or superior to mine....just another opinion. Feel free to reject any posts that I may make.

I have heard DH use this term as basically Indiana, Illinois, Ohio, Just the primary states close to Purdue. Those you might include as natural places to recruit.

right, but what does the 11/12 mean. They got the 11/12 they targeted? Im sure thats not it.

Remember 15 years ago how much fun was made of IU fans who claimed that their last place recruiting classes were all filled with diamonds in the rough, and that the recruiting experts didn't know anything?

Does the Purdue fan's girlfriend have a full beard or just a mustache? And is she as happy with your awesome recruiting class as the rest of you?

Results Time

Good class, bad class, two stars, three stars....in the third year it's all about winning and the won loss record! That's all that matters now!

That's how I read it, just missed on one target from "state of Purdue" ???

I mean, these are interesting facts, but the question is which of these sets apart Purdue from anywhere else? Seems like you could do this for any school in the country with similar numbers.

Re: I think you missed a line.............a parched in a pear tree?*

partridge?

depends on if your sister has waxed her lip that day

Maybe that was Knight. So just one missed Scholly offer? I guess. The 12 still seems really low to me. You would think as kids decide to go elsewhere you would offer something like a hundred schollys per year.

Perhaps this means that we really did get the first rounders at least from around here. Thats plausible to me with the list of kids we got.

Re: I think you missed a line.............a parched in a pear tree?*

A parched in a partridge tree?

I cannot figure out what 11/12 means,. Only 5 recruits were from Indiana and 8 from tri-state area. However the thing that would concern me more than anything would be DH appears to have written off in state recruiting. If he isn't chasing the top ten in the State of Indiana every year, I would be concerned. May not get them, but at least should be chasing them.

I am glad that Hazell and company work so hard at recruiting otherwise we might have gotten a last place recruiting class. Thanks Coach.

I think the 12 was a typo.

"State of Purdue" is composed of 6 states. Indiana, Illinois, MIchigan, Ohio, Kentucky and Pennsylvania.

Im not a fan of it as i think it is odd. First, he lifted the idea from Tressel who had the State of Youngstown thing when he was in IAA. Purdue made itself a good team by recruiting TX, GA and FL during Tiller's run. Hazell has started to go into TX and GA more, so i think he has changed his tune a little.

I had a boss once who's favorite saying was, "Let's not confuse effort with results." I could not care less how hard the staff worked to sign this class- that is what they are paid to do.

When I first read it, I thought he was referring to the State of Indiana (Purdue). That makes some sense. Calling that many states - when PA can be 8 hours away from Purdue - is a bit silly and generic
