There's a couple threads already talking about personnel, reality coming to town, updated odds/power rankings. Purdue is 3-0 with 28 games to go. DJ is out for the season.

What's everyone's predictions for:
1) overall record
2) BIG10 regular season finish (1st, 2nd, 3rd, etc)
3) NCAA seed #

Feel free to include any (short) hot takes.

20-11
4th or 5th
7-10 seed

Sorry, not high on the team right now. LOVE these 5 guards and TKR individually, but as a team they have flaws. Now on que....watch them get hot and beat AL... lol

Oh man, I hope you're wrong. I'm a little less optimistic than I was three weeks ago but IMO the reality is that this team was always going to have growing pains early in the year and we're likely to react overly emotionally as fans.

I mean tbh with you, what team looks that complete right now? I’d say not a lot at this point. All top 25 teams have struggled with lessor opponents so far. I think once 2024 ends is when we will have a better picture of what we are as a team. Just want to see improvement rebounding as a team—don’t care who the leader is, but just cut down on second chance opportunities and unforced turnovers.

Yep hope they fix it. Not sure the tools are there though after losing our starting Center. But we have one of the best coaches in the nation, so perhaps I undersold the coaches ability to get them going.
Hope I am wrong.

It was still going to be rough at times with DJ, just due to him being a Frosh and not being as strong …yet.

The silver lining here is burgess will get great mins and experience from this year and be that much better next year. But also, it’s time for Braden to take over and really be THE guy for us. He needs to take over games at times and win them for us. Lookin forward to it.

I've been a little discouraged so far too and want to temper expectations.

That being said..... What if Colvin becomes a dude (really like what Im seeing), Heide takes off from Yale 2nd half performance, Cox/Harris keep getting better, TKR/Smith/Loyer play at or near All B1G level, and you just need Furst/Burgess/Berg to give you 15 fouls and hit the glass.

Painter won a B1G title with much less in '19, so I'm not ready to peg them into the middle of what looks to be a wide open conference just yet.

Got feeling better about Purdue from reading this. Thanks....needed

24-7
1st - so far I like what I see in the conference. Conference looks weak.
2 seed in the tourney

I'll take it a step further and predict we make it to the second weekend of the tourney

Yeh, if all the variables go our way this CAN be a very good team. Reality is probably that team SOME of the time and something short of that the other times as frosh and first time big minute guys acclimate to big time ball.
23-8, 3d in Big 10, 4th seed.

Here's the summary so far. Purdue79fan has got 33 games played so it skews the Wins/Losses upward slightly.

KenPom currently has Purdue 4th in offensive rating and 52nd in defensive rating. I'm encouraged by the offensive production. The weakside/help defense and rebounding has not been what typical Purdue teams under Painter have been.

I question if Purdue is "too small" or "not tough enough" this year to see consistently good rebounding. I get the freshman are still learning, but "you can't teach size" might be a real thing for this squad. Going off of the Purdue roster (assuming with shoes + being generous) Smith 6'0", Loyer 6'5", Harris 6'3", TKR 6'9".

Accounting for growing pains into February, this seems like a double digit loss team, and a BIG10 finish of 4-6 (although Painter has a strong record of top4 finishes) and a 8 seed, but also a dangerous team come late in the season as everyone learns the system and their roles. Colvin is the X-factor, so much potential. I thought he played inspired defense against Yale except that intentional foul. Let's see more of it.

Here's my hot takes:
1) Heide isn't physical enough to consistently guard the 4's that bang and offensively needs to let it fly from 3.
2) Berg gains the confidence and plays well enough to take the most minutes in the 5 position, esp. against larger opponents.
3) TKR defense!? TKR gave up many easy buckets to who he was suppose to be guarding, I saw a couple "ball watching" moments along with getting back on defense late, etc. He's in his 4th year in the program, that's concerning to me, especially if he's the biggest Purdue player on the court.

I like PaBoilers picks. This team seems to be around a 10 loss team. I’m hoping they surprise me however and I believe we can be a tough out come tourney time.

thanx, but I just copied rgarlitz's, to me we are like a typical Iowa team, we can score but not much D, so that will carry us to a decent record but when we are on the road and the shots don't fall, there's not much D to fall back on to keep us in a game

24-7, top 3, 4 seed. This may be wishful thinking but I think we have the offensive firepower to simply out score many teams even if we aren’t defensively strong enough to shut them down and don’t dominate the boards as in years past.

Alright I am ready to make my predictions after going over the schedule.

27-8 overall with two wins in the BTT and three wins in the NCAA Tournament. Tied for second in the B1G with a 16-4 record.

I see the defense getting better as guys stop over helping and get better at recovering. We still don’t rebound well but it does improve. We take care of the ball to cut down on opponents attempts at the basket.

For me this season will be like the 2019 team. Guard heavy with less of a focus on the post. Good shooters and outscoring opponents will be this teams identity. I can see this team really being good from distance with enough shooters on the floor to not have off nights. Once teams start running us off the line our post/midrange game will improve, especially the small ball lineup.

Overall a nice season and one that leaves us salivating for next year with everyone back and adding DJ and Benter.

Well got the last part right on beating AL.

20-11 is a wrong call......
*Said it because at the time I was not seeing the TKR I knew he could be....and was down on him at the time on both sides of the ball.
*Said it because of rebounding.
*Said it because of our interior D.

It looks like the first two are trending upwards.....and the last one they still have to work on.

So happy to be wrong on the 20-11 call. Not sure what to think now until we see consistent production from TKR......I know he can do it. But has to be great more often. So I know it won't be 20-11. And happy to admit being wrong on that call.

For sure. TAMUCC and NKU aren’t some cupcakes—they’re going to compete at the top of their conferences. And that Yale is going to be a very good team in the ivy, if not THE best in the ivy.

Painter is testing his team and forcing guys to make plays/grow up quick to find out what the team can do.

It’s great to see that he challenges his team and allows him to see what he has. Unlike other teams who just schedule cupcakes for a majority of their non conf and you have no idea how good they are until they actually play in their conference.

****revised for clarity 😂 (@Chi-Boiler )

You were managing your expectations, nothing wrong with that. Nine games left this calendar year, Marshall and Toledo should be wins. The rest are pretty rough, including KenPom #1 Auburn in Birmingham. At Penn State is no joke this season.

IMO, 11 losses was too conservative but it’s probably too early to say that you were WAY off. Tuesday night at Marquette will be telling.

Ace Baldwin said at Media day that he can’t wait to play Smith. Baldwin going to try and show he’s better, can’t wait to watch that matchup.

Auburn looks verrrrry good and verrry athletic. Can’t wait to see how we do.

Baldwin is a beast. He had 10A last night. And we know how good he defends. PSU did well to keep him in the fold. Yes that will be a fun individual match up. Team wise likely not as good.
