Ranking the best college football coaching hires in the Power Five

Rhule thought that the psu job was going to open up so he stayed at Temple an extra year. After this season Franklin is there a minimum of 2 more years. No one called him up Purdue was big on brohms and Fleck. Texas was all Herman, lsu was Herman or Jimbo lost both and decided to wait a year or 2, he doesn't have the flash for Oregon, and his best option would have probably been IU (but they quickly filled the position).

So you have Baylor who I'd in a terrible position and Rhule. He gets his big pay day, but the odds are severely against him.
Look, it doesn't matter if Rhule fails to win one game at Baylor. He can go 0-12 for the next three years and nonetheless he is a guaranteed multi-millionaire. Total financial security for life unless he is as dumb as Vince Young with his revenue.

Look at Hazell. Wouldn't you love to trade places with him? He's got $12 million in pocket and doesn't need to show up at work next Monday.

Rhule would be a fool to turn down the Baylor offer. And we may all see the day that Fleck deeply regrets his continuing stay at WMU

I'm not sold on Allen. He's going to be HC AND DC moving forward. I don't see how he could do both his first time out at a P5 program. How long did Wilson take before he got a winning record when he started with zero HC experience? That was AFTER IU already got to a bowl game.

Wilson inherited a Bill Lynch roster that had less talent than a Darrell Hazell roster. I know you guys are secretly hoping that Tom Allen is a flop, but I think he's already a better coach than Kevin Wilson. Wilson was horrible. He lost so many games with bad decisions. Almost lost to a pitiful Purdue team a few weeks ago and it was Tom Allens defense that saved him, like many games this season.

IU will not replace Wilson's offensive mind.

Maybe. But they definitely can't replace Allens defensive mind. After ranking in the 100s in total defense every year for like 20 years, Allen was good enough to get them to 39th this year. And probably better next year.

Doesn't matter what we hope or what you think in regards to Allen. The results will speak for themselves.

There is no denying that Allen is a great defensive coach. But you don't have any idea wether or not he will be a good HC. None. There is no sample size from which to draw conclusions from. I'll tell you this though, I'll reserve judgement until the bowl game. I think the results will speak for itself.

Playing a top 20 team in a bowl game won't be my judgment of him. I'll give him all of next season.

It will be and it should be. You're in the East Division, going up against PSU, UM, OSU and MSU every year. If IU can't hang, then you've made the wrong hire because he hasn't made you any better than Wilson did. You don't have to wait till next year to see how he will do against top 25 talent, you will see if he can cut it in a few weeks.

IU is not going to win in that division without a niche offense and offensive coach. Allen is a great defensive coach but they will never have the Willies and Joe's to compete straight up with that yearly conference schedule. Wilson was a perfect coach for IU. I suspect they will once again not make a bowl for another 10 years. Purdue really hit a homer with Brohm IMO. For the exact same reason plus Brohm is an elite offensive mind.

I agree to a point, but IU's players are going to be playing for their former HC, just as Fife, Odle, and those guys were playing for Knight when they beat Duke and went to the Finals. I think it's going to take at least next year before Allen shows if he's got what it takes to run a major college program. Big difference when you're calling the shots and signing the recruits. MHO....another Fred Glass mistake.

Sorry, but I remember the excitement and adulation given on the hiring of Hazell. When I looked at his record, on paper, he had all the credentials needed to turn the Boilers around with the exception of one thing...winning with his own players. Hazell, like Brohm, said all the right things....and failed miserably. And I said he would from day one because of his lack of experience. Does that mean Brohm will be the next Hazell...no it doesn't. Does it mean he'll come in and turn it around and get to major bowls...no it doesn't. The guy has been a HC for three years in a non power conference, and granted his record seems pretty good But....Purdue and the Big are different animals. The one thing I like about Brohm as opposed to Hazell...and I'm guessing it's the AD's decision...is that he's recruiting for PU instead of coaching WKU in what ever bowl they're in. I could care less about slogan's or sayings, and will be impressed when he leads PU to an 10 win season and a major bowl and brings in four and five star's every year. Anything less is settling in my opinion....because there should be no excuses for not being in the top four of the league every year.

I'm as big of a Purdue fan as anyone here, but you're being unrealistic to the point of naivete and ridicule. We have had ONE 10 win season, 1979. "No excuses for not being in the top four of the league every year". In a 14 team Big Ten? If you just take Wisconsin, Michigan, Michigan State, Ohio State, Penn State and Nebraska, the so-called "traditional powers", that's SIX right there. "Every year"? Right.
