Raleigh Burgess

Kid plays on the same AAU team Indiana Elite as Flory so we have seen a lot of him. IMO he was the main target because he can play inside out. Moves well without the ball. Similar game to Caleb Furst.

I like our chance with both IMO we are pretty much a lock with Harris I can't imagine we would lose him. Most predict Purdue or Stanford.
Getting Burgess has to help with signing Perry (same AAU team) First to commit gets the scholarship?
What little I've seen of him, my first thought was Caleb Furst.

I'd like to think Purdue would take both, but it might be a little crowded for them if they want to play right away.

Perry's skillset with Smith and Loyer would be fun having 3 guards that can dribble, pass, and shoot like that. What a fun offense that would be. Some 3 point records might go down.

I think Harris best balances what the roster projects by being another shooter/combo that is also a string defender.

Furst/Burgess/Berg
TKR/Heide/Waddell
Colvin/Catchings/Benter
Fletch/Harris?
Smith/Perry?

Definitely need to add guards the rest of the way IMO.
In this era where it is so easy to transfer, I don’t think taking both is out of the question, though I don’t think that Painter likes to go over 13 committed players.

Same thought I had. Another year with no PT, Waddell might be ready to move on. It doesn't bother me having him. I think he's serviceable and a late bloomer, just alot of talent on this roster. Obviously don't see him playing much this year.

was hoping for Burgess, has a better shot than Furst too. Hoping for the 2 guards too, let Waddell move on

I have no idea whether Brian Waddell will ever be a factor for Purdue or not but it amazes me that Purdue fans are writing off a kid after a redshirt year and major knee surgery. Unless you were down on this kid coming out of high school I'm not sure on what you'd be basing your opinion.

Purdue needs Harris more than Perry. Both are great though.
Are you sure? I haven’t seen either play, but both are similarly ranked and Perry is generally listed as a point guard, which seems to fit a need. Perry seems like he may be a great compliment to Colvin’s athleticism. I really don’t know who Purdue needs more and I’ll be very pleased when either commits, but it seems to me the Perry has a lot to offer.

I thought Painter was on the son that went to UM (and was a Purdue killer while there) but he backed off due to lack of interest on Painter's part.
Nope, never offered. He had early commitments from Davis and Simpson and didn’t have any more scholarships available for a forward by the time he blew up. Huge mistake, obviously, and one reason he doesn’t typically offer as early as he used to.

He DID offer Gary Harris, maybe that’s who you’re thinking of.

My understanding was that UM was all over GR3 before he blew up anyway and Purdue tried to get in the conversation when he did and it was too late.

It's not like RayDay and Simpson weren't good prospects. Ray was a great Boiler and we'll never know what Simpson might have become had he not had the medical condition.

Ray is/was great for us. Look out for a youngster that Ray is working with heavily Malachi Edgell. Also, Simpson is a great guy working out of Illinois still keeping tabs on Purdue.

I don’t see how Waddell gets meaningful minutes at Purdue.

So where would he get minutes. Certainly not at the 4. Is he a better option then Morton, Colvin or Heide at the 3? In 2024 is he going to be a better option than Heide, Colvin, Benter or any other recruit or transfer? I hope not.

Honestly, I could care less if the 11th, 12th or 13th man on the roster stays or goes. The only thing I would say is knowing Painter, if he stays its more likely that Purdue would redshirt a freshmen in 2024.

Why would you hope that he's not a better option than those players? Because they were better in high school and are more highly ranked? I have no idea whether he'll be good enough to play or who he would play over because I've never seen any of those guys in a college game. You may very well be right.

I will say that 1) I don't care about rankings once a guy gets on campus 2) I have confidence that Painter is going to play the best players 3) I agree that BW is going to have a tough time getting minutes next year unless he has a spectacular summer 4) I wouldn't be convinced that the younger players are a disappointment if BW fully recovers from his injury and some of those guys have trouble taking his minutes

We got a pretty good sample of what Waddell was all about at the beginning of last year. So we've seen him play and while he may end up being a serviceable player at some point, I don't see him being a key piece of a top 20 team. Sure he can get better but my hope is that Colvin and Heide are better. Colvin is now considered a top 50 recruit. If he gets redshirted and then averages less than a point a game his second year, I'll be extremely disappointed. That's all.

I am glad we have him, but the fact he couldn’t beat out a pretty offensively challenged group at the 3 and 4 spots last year tells me he will have a hard time ever playing much here.

Right, because you are the SAME player coming off a major injury as you are 3 and 4 years later.......................um.....
This march he was at least 16 months post ACL. These days, most athletes are as recovered as they’re going to get by that point.

I really hope I’m wrong, but the competition for minutes wont get any easier than it was last year…maybe he can be a 4 with a dribble drive game?

I'd argue that we have zero samples of what he can do when healthy. I think it's pretty well established that what we saw at the beginning of last year wasn't close to 100%. He may never get back to that 100% level but obviously our hope should be that he does.

Agree with your point on Colvin.

I posted above but it was made pretty clear last year that he wasn't close to 100%. You can obviously interpret that however you want but I'm putting little stock in what we saw last year being an indicator of what he can be if he can get healthy.

I do agree with others that minutes are going to be tough to come by next year and posted above that it would take a pretty amazing summer of recovery and development for him to play big minutes next year.

Coaches disagree with???

They gave Waddell a good amount of run early he just wasn't ready. Physically he was mostly 100% but a big part of major injuries is mental. He didn't trust his knee yet, I'm guessing he is much better this year

No, it was GRob III. I just remember him always playing with a chip on his shoulder against Purdue and playing well.
If I recall, we thought Harris was in the bag and he pulled last minute switch to MSU. That hurt with him being from a Purdue family.

I wonder if it is a coincidence that both Berg and Burgess appear to be solid three point shooters, potentially opening up the lane for slashers like Colvin, Heide, and Catchings.
That would be a huge change in Painter's coaching philosophy/style to have 7 footers shooting 3s. I know he let Haarms take a few but it was never a weapon.

Agree. Painter has no choice here, Flory wants more money and more city/homie lifestyle. I’m not upset one bit. Go somewhere you can party and brag about yourself, we’ll take hard working kids who do it the right way.
Give me a break....
City/Homie lifestyle? WTF is that? Is he going to Miami? UCLA? St. Johns? I mean, those would all provide the nightlife he apparently wants.
And apparently money isn't an issue either.

Money is always an issue. I still think if he goes to college it will be with Adams.

You recall incorrectly, Lenny, shockingly. :)

Yes, Purdue, Michigan State, and Indiana (remember the infamous calendar mistake Crean made in contacting him for a secondary violation?) were all in for him, and Purdue had a decent chance, especially with his mother, Joy Holmes Harris, being a former Lady Boiler legend. However, Izzo I think was first in on Harris and this was never a switch at the last minute. If anything, Painter probably thought he had a better shot with Branden Dawson early on......until.....well, we don't need to revisit that rabbit hole right now.

Swanigan averaged 2.4 attempts a game as a sophomore when he was playing a lot of center. JaJuan Johnson averaged 1.5 attempts as a senior. Both of those guys had great post games so Painter didn’t have to allow them to take threes. I think Painter will allow it with the right player.

One big problem was that mom had bad feelings toward Purdue and Burke for firing her coach.

Word in Indy was Gary Sr wanted Purdue, mom didn’t, Gary Jr liked all 3 schools, maybe IU the most but Crean creeped him out, so he compromised and picked the best program at the time: MSU.

Nah, Waddell is the exact sort of system guy that we need. He's not got the NBA on his radar, he doesn't have other people in his ear, and he is a Boiler' legacy, through and through. We need a guy like this in our locker room and on campus.

I do recall some of that being bandied about......less neurons around now to confirm, though.....haha.

Can’t blame the kid for being creeped out by this guy:

Chicks dig the long ball. My son sits at the 3 pt line every shoot around. Even after I remind him that he only hits 50% at the FT line. Stephon Curry’s influence on the basketball world cannot be denied.
