QB for 2022?

OK, I'm loving this season as much as the next Purdue fan but I'm already wondering about next year. I can see 7 wins for sure and quite possibly 8 which is more than I expected to begin the year. My fear is that Purdue backslides next year and slogs to a 4-8 record.

Aiden will be gone (seems like he has been around for 10 years) and I do see him as a free agent sign-up by an NFL team. He could easily have a career like David Blough. I assume Jack Plummer will be the favorite but unless he takes the "next step" in his growth as a QB, I don't see him being different than earlier this year. Bell should be gone so he won't have that talent available. Durham should be back and there are other good receivers I think ready to step up.

Living in FL, I don't get to keep up with the goings on at Purdue like I'd like. Will Brady Allen graduate mid-year and be available for Spring Football? What about Alaimo. Has he grown enough to be considered a viable option to replace O'Connell?

Thanks for your responses.

Let's say Aiden moves along (I'm certainly fine if he stays), I think it's open competition. If Aliamo can show he can push the ball down field better than Jack without turning it over too much, he's going to get the nod imo.

I've got no trouble handing the ball to a freshman if he enrolls in January and has the kind of talent Allen appears to have. I know. Too complex, not ready, blah, blah, blah. If our OL is improved there's no reason to sit somebody if they're the winner in camp. Much like we've found with Painter recruiting kids from winning teams is a plus. They don't have to learn to be a winner.

If he wants it. But he’s been here 5 years already, might want to move on.
Move on from football? I would be surprised because he is really coming into his own. Next year is likely the last chance he will have to play football. I would hope and think he would stick around.

And with additional conditioning in the off season, he might be able to improve his scrambling ability.

I agree. Another good year may make the difference between free agent and draft pick.

I hope he stays too. But some kids don’t want to spend 6 years in college.

This won’t be a 4-8 team next year. No way, no how.
1) Have you looked at the schedule?
2) Losing 2 best players will hurt, but next year’s roster should be deep and experienced.
3) Think we’ll get some more key additions through the portal to offset the losses.
4) Aidan looks amazing now, but just a few weeks ago people were throwing him under the bus. Learning comes through experience. If Aidan doesn’t return I think one of the other QB’s will be ready to step up.

Oconnell .. then on to the NFL
Long shot, but he has a great arm and seems to be really seeing the plays as they unfold.

NFL likes mobile qbs, so if he could somehow work on that.... Maybe martial arts like George.

True, but spring semester should be a pretty fun time for him, I would bet...
Oh for sure.

He won’t be a starter, but with his accuracy, size, and anticipation, he’ll get a shot at being a backup.

And he’s already proven he can come off the bench cold and produce when called upon. Multiple times in fact.

I hope he returns.. he’s still underrated

I kind of would like to see him return and if he does, it wouldn't shock me to see Plummer transfer. I am NOT wanting him to mind you, I just would not be shocked to see it.

I like our qb room. Even if O’Connell leaves its should be quite the competition between Plummer, Burton and Alaimo. Allen will also be here next year and could surprise people. Tbh if it’s not O’Connell, my money is on Alaimo.

No matter what it looks like we have at least 6 years of good to great qb play ahead of us.

I don’t think Plummer would get pac 12 interest if he wanted to go home. Not to start ..

I would assume he makes a practice squad if he tries to go that route. His understanding of the passing game is quite good, so he would probably impress.

Lack of mobility in the pros might make him vulnerable to injury, but he gets rid of the ball and moves ok in the pocket.

I say he comes back for a 6th year.

Its going to be really interesting to see how he plays the rest of the season. If he tears it up over the next 4 games, I think he puts himself in pretty good position to possibly get drafted, imo. This is a really weak QB class.

Is next year's much better?

He comes back next year, he is in theory even better due to experience. He, right now, is playing his best football...not sure why that would not continue.

I have no idea what his genuine chances are at the next level...I know what his chances are in general if he returns for another year at Purdue,

Do you mean the Tommy who punched a law enforcement officer (no doubt stressed by the lack of soft majors at nd) and is now the OC at nd?

He likely was more frustrated he missed out on the "love" of college football's darling.

I started in '70. BS in '87. MS in '90. AuD in '08.
After I graduated with my BS, I'd sit at work and think "You know, if I'd gone for my Masters, I'd been in class right about now..." Then "You know, if I'd gone for my PhD, I'd be at Quincy's right about now..."

Um most of the best quarterbacks of all time are far from mobile. Manning, Brady, Brees just to name a few.

Big 10 defenses are a little better than Allen’s High School Region. Won’t get on the field as a freshman.
