Purdue is coming off a tough loss to Texas A & M in Indianapolis a week ago, while Auburn smashed Ohio State and Georgia State most recently. One of the big question marks for this game is the health and availability of Auburn's star player and NPOY candidate, Johni Broome. He injured his right shoulder in the early going of Auburn's game with Georgia State, and although initial indications were that he might miss significant time - the update prognosis has improved to a day-to-day rehab type injury. He is travelling with the team for this game, but his overall status has not been confirmed.
With or without Broome, Purdue faces a very difficult task today matched up against the type of team that gives it fits with a big, physical presence at multiple positions, especially in the back court.
The Tigers enter this game 10-1 overall and have yet to take the floor in SEC action on the season. Against Georgia State, Auburn never trailed in the contest as they led by 12 at the half before burying the Panthers in the second half as they outscored them 57-28 to roll to the victory. The Tigers shot 57.4% from the field, including nine of 25 from three-point range, and held Georgia State to 33.9% shooting in the game.
Chaney Johnson (filling in for Broome) led the Tigers with 26 points, eight rebounds and four assists in the win.
Auburn comes into this
Battle in Birmingham 6th in the nation in scoring offense as it puts up an average of 88.5 points per game on the year. The Tigers pull down an average of 39.3 rebounds per contest (63rd) and are 15th with an average of 18.7 assists per game. They are above average defensively as they are 46th in scoring defense by allowing an average of 65.1 points a night.
Johni Broome leads Auburn offensively and is one of six players averaging in double figures as he puts up 18.1 points and 11.5 rebounds plus 2.7 blocks per game this season. Miles Kelly (10.3 points), Chaney Johnson (10.6 points, six rebounds), Chad Baker-Mazara (13.2 points) and Denver Jones (10.9 points, 2.5 assists) are solid secondary scoring options. Tahaad Pettiford (10.7 points), Jahki Howard, JP Pegues, Dylan Cardwell and Chris Moore are all looked at to contribute. Auburn shoots 51.1% from the field as a team on the season, which is eighth in the nation. The Tigers knock down an average of 10.4 three-pointers a night while shooting 38% from beyond the arc on the year, which is 45th in the nation. Auburn has been above average on FT's as they convert 76.5% of their attempts on the season, which is 46th in the country.
KenPom ratings has Auburn 1st overall (1st offensively and 14th defensively) while Purdue is currently at 23rd (9th offensively and 67th defensively). Adjusted tempo - pace of play has Auburn rated 185th to Purdue's 308th. Similar to last week - it may seem counterintuitive, but Purdue might be well served to exploit some transition/break opportunities rather than wait for the inevitable conundrum in some half-court possessions.
No question, the Boilers will have to play their best collective game to even hang with this Auburn team, and Braden Smith, Trey Kaufman-Renn, and Fletcher Loyer will really need to step up and produce at a high level like they are capable. The athleticism of Myles Colvin and Camden Heide can really be useful this afternoon - but they absolutely have to take the initiative on that and make plays at both ends of the floor.
If Broome is a no-go, that will benefit Purdue, but it also means they'll get a heavier dose of Chaney Johnson and Auburn's bench. As Matt Painter surmised - "
The combination of their front line and their ability to score at the basket in different ways that go along with just straight-up quickness and athleticism. Very few people can sub and be better — and they can."
Also from Painter - "
The beat goes on. They have guys that come off the bench and don't play a lot — anywhere from five to 15 minutes — that score 17, 18 points in places. So, they're very talented. He's (Bruce Pearl) done a great job with this group. They're a very good defensive team. Obviously, they're the best team ever at this point, efficiency-wise offensively, in the history of KenPom. So, I think that speaks for itself."
This is the last of the four match-ups with Southeastern Conference teams for Purdue, having wins over Alabama and Mississippi and the loss to Texas A & M. Can the Boilers close it out with a third win today? If so, they'll have to do it in a hostile environment against one of the best teams in the nation.....we shall see coming up in a few hours or so.
Boiler up, my friends...
