Purdue v. Penn State Game Thread

Run away, run away...and live another day. I'm sick.

Those Nittany Lions are dynamite!

We still see a lot of the same mistakes/inadequacies occur in close games like we have the past several seasons, but this team is winning a lot of them so far, so I'll take that as a positive.

Will take any kind of win in Happy Valley. Hate that place. Good to see the 3s fall at the end. Worried once again by our dribble drive D. Carr almost single handedly beat us. Have to play better at Crisler.

So was CE in the doghouse? I know he took some quick shots. I don't think that's a bad thing, as long as he limits them: it puts pressure on the opposition when this speed-demon guard is on the attack against them.

Carsen played poorly on both ends. At least Cline can shoot.

Carsen could probably learn to put a little more arc on his shot. I didn't think he was that bad defensively. Also, he is a guy that WANTS the ball in his hands at the end of close games. That's why I wanted to see him in there. He WANTS to be the guy that makes or breaks the outcome. Plus, he is a one man press-breaker.

So glad the State player thought-shot clock reset!
Yep...imagine if we'd have had a shot clock violation without a shot (likely in that situation) and they had the ball with 11 seconds and needing two to tie or three to win....on second though, I don't want to imagine that at all!

So did Biggie as a freshman, and that didn't always work out they way we wanted last year. This year Biggie's MUCH better at understanding the game situation, angles, doubles, etc. I'm betting Carsen will also get much better at picking the right offensive options at crunch time.

Ahh...now I can relax for a bit and see if NW can beat Illinois and watch Iowa beat IU in IC.

Seriously? The guy won the game for us but you're too much of a blowhard idiot to admit it?

I'm saying more times than not, I don't want to see a lineup of both Mathias and Cline in at crunch-time. More often than not, I think it will be a hindrance instead of a boon. That is what I am saying. That was a good job by Cline tonight, but it does not change the way I feel about lineups where Cline and Mathias are in at the same time.

Now you know why I called this a TRAP GAME and why I keep emphasizing paint defense. When we hive up 40 pts in layups, dunks and FT we have a VERY VERY hard time winning. In this game, . . we gave up 42 ! For reference purposes we gave up 35 to Minn, 39 to Iowa, 42 to Nebraska, 35 to Louisville and 54 to Nova.

So how did we win? Anyone else notice that Penn State only had 1 layup in the OT period ?? Dumb on their part - freshmen mistakes ! Not as good when they have to shoot jump shots.

The game left me with 3 thoughts:

1.) The paint defense issue is still there and there are 16-18 teams which could exploit it in the NCAA if we don't find a solution. (Look for IU to try this approach next, although their guards aren't as good at going to the rim as Penn States are) Driving on PJ when they know we have no shot blockers is just too easy late in the game.
2.) I still believe we should go to a pack line/zone defense late in the game against driving teams and force teams to take a jump shot. I have to believe Penn State would have forced up a few shots which could have ended it in regulation. &
3.) and the best take away . . we DIDN'T panic late in the game - we just sucked it up. (great trait to see) They all made big plays down the stretch ! (PJ, Ryan, Vince, Isaac, Biggie, Dakota) It's a good thing ! whew ! ! Need some ice cream to cool down !

A lot of those opponents gets their points in the paint off of drives. Some (ex: Louisville) were able to get their frontcourt guys posted up and slashing/maneuvering around the basket but most of the time, it's from guards and forwards using their dribble against the Boilers' man-to-man.
