Purdue made Gicari Harris's final six.

Picking up on your last sentence. You could be right, but there are a lot of variables. We need a Big Dog, CE, Biggie, or JI type player to put us over the top in 2024 and replace what we'll be missing from Zach. We've been fortunate to have three AA in the last 5 years. It's like we've come to expect that someone is going to develop into that role, but it's hard to project a guy is going to be a top 10 player in the country before he even plays a college game.

We've only seen 5 of the guys projected to be on the roster in 2024 play and in my opinion none of them are All American caliber players. We'll certainly be solid, but we're going to need star power from one of the guys coming in. Maybe a sophomore Colvin or a freshmen Catchings? We'll see.

It does seem like an odd mix of schools. I haven't followed his recruitment closely, just my first reaction when seeing those 6 schools listed.

That's a very weird list of schools for a top Bball recruit.
UM-NIL?
Stanford/GT-Does this kid want to be an engineer?
VT-No idea
LSU?-They probably had his official visit during a big SEC night game.
Purdue-the natural selection

He runs it down for each.

I know we all like to be "it is Big Dog's kid" but don't believe he is actively involved in his kids life. Think similar to Dale Davis and TJD.

When discussing VT:
“I like their playing style because they let their guards have freedom. Their coaching staff continuously lets me know the value and impact that I will add to their program.”

If that is what he's looking for it doesn't bode well for Purdue.

Yep, we kept such a tight rein on Carsen Edwards, right?

Sorry but Painter plays to his strengths. Sometimes that is a forward, sometimes a center, and sometimes it is a guard. You only seem to recall how we played last year. Are you even surprised that the offense ran through the POY? That does not mean we will play that way when Edey is gone. Harris could very well be the focal point of the offense, much like Etwaan Moore was.

True but Ivey and Carsen showed that Painter lets dudes get buckets when they are in the flow of the game. We also won’t have Edey which will change the dynamic of our offense.

I don't disagree with your assessment of Painter not running a terribly guard friendly style, but I'd send him 30 minutes of Carson Edwards pretty much having the freedom to do whatever he wanted with the ball. Granted, Edwards earned that right, but Painter will allow if you produce.

And he let Etwaun cook too.

I'd rather have a JaJuan Johnson than a Swanigan.
And I'd take a Carsen Edwards over a Ivey, too.

Crazy talk? Nah.

JJ was a beast: 20 ppg, 9 rpg, 2.3 bpg as a senior. Consensus AA and B1G POY
Jajaun was also BTDPOTY. He crushed offensive game plans. He scored in double figures in every game his senior year. JJ was an unstoppable beast on both ends of thr floor. The only thing Caleb had over Jajuan was rebounding, but I'd take Jajuan over Caleb easily. Caleb was a fantastic player, but just don't like the recency bias against JJ. JJ was unstoppable.

Completely agree. There have been a lot of guards under Painter who are role players within the system but the best players get as much freedom as anyone in the country. Pretty empty rhetoric from VT.

JJ was good for sure. And on my favorite team. But until Robbie got hurt he was a 3d or 4th option.
Swanigan avg 18.5 and 12.5 AS A SOPHOMORE ........... And was NPOY........ I like JJ, but come on. ;)

That and that silly little NPOY award........ what bias is that again?
Oh, and he did it as a SOPH..............................

Bringing the discussion back to Harris, I had the same thought about it being an odd group of schools for his final 6. But then I remembered that my youngest is starting his college search right now, and one thing I told him was that kids choose schools for all sorts of different reasons. So who knows.

I think it's more of reflection of Painter not having recruited very many impact guards, especially NBA caliber. Moore, Edwards, Ivey. That's really about the list that jumps out at you.

I liked JJ a lot but that's crazy talk. Was never the force that Caleb was.
JJ could block 15 foot jump shots, run the floor better, and was more mobile
in the half court, too. And JJ kept the 2010 Sweet 16 game against
Duke interesting until the final 7 minutes without Hummel losing by 13.
Duke went on the win the NC.

A fully healthy Purdue team lead by Swanigan lost to Kansas by 32 in the
in the 2017 Sweet 16. That Kansas team lost in the Elite 8 to Oregon.

I'd take JJ any day of the week.

Big shout out to Cuonzo Martin for getting JJ to Purdue. E'Twaun and Rob
followed suit. Had Cuonzo been associate head coach all these years,
very good chance Purdue would have made the Final Four, maybe won it all.

GT isn’t really weird is it? He’s from Georgia and they just hired a former really good NBA player as their head Coach. I would guess it will be either Purdue or the Rambling Wreck.

He has the skills and body that make him a good ball player. Like all I'm sure he wants to play after college. Unlike some that are really good, he wants to play D and that tells you he wants to win and so along with developing I imagine winning carries some weight. Watch a pick up game and the people playing some D want to win and are generally winners. So I'm guessing development, family and winning are the biggies

Pointing to a couple of guards in the last 17 years doesn't disprove the idea that Painter typically runs a fairly structured offense and unless your exceptional, you'll need to play within the system. After reading through his resume I doubt Harris will be one of the exceptions, if for no other reason he probably won't be the most talented guy on the team.

JJ was on the best team in my lifetime at Purdue.
Might have something to do with what each team accomplished.

JJ was the better 2 way player. And a better fit in TODAY’S game, which is really what we’re discussing.

Saying it’s “Crazy Talk” to prefer JJ to Biggie in modern hoops is, well .…😏

I believe that he hasn’t taken another job since Missouri. If a spot opens up at Purdue and he wants to come back, I would take him in a heartbeat.
When Purdue does get a new HC, I hope they go away from the Keady/Painter coaching tree. If Painter retires without a couple of FF or NC, I think there's a need for a complete culture change in the program.

In that scenario, agree that a fresh start from the CGK / CMP tree wouldn't be bad but think it might be more appropriate to describe it as a "philosophical change" - not culture, should that occurr.

Culture of boiler ball is outanding and very healthy IMO and one would hope that aspect would not change

I have not read every comment. Here is what I know he has limited contact with his dad. Gelen and his sister have been big influences on him regarding Purdue. The kid is a beast on defense the likes of which we haven't had since Ray Davis IMO. I love watching him play tough loves contact. He shoots over 40% from three really selective on shooting his ability to drive the lane gets him open shots from three. If I were to compare him to A former player. It would be Ray Davis. Although Ray scored 50 plus twice in HS. With G that probably won't happen because he loves to pass still averaged over 20 in HS and AAU. I have been following him for a few years if he had a final 6 this time last year, I doubt we would have made the cut. But Painter has been working his butt off on him. I like our chances but wouldn't bet the farm on it.

Give me more guards like E'Twaun Moore, Carsen Edwards.
Give me more bigs like Robbie Hummel, JaJaun Johnson.

3 of the 4 became Boilers because JJ loved Cuonzo Martin.
Even with NIL, Purdue needs Cuonzo back as Associate HC.
And he is currently available, too. Go Boilers!
