For various reasons it would be a pretty big miss for Purdue not to sign him at this point versus that group of schools. With Jones leaving after this year he'd likely be stepping into significant minutes on a top ten team from day one.
Here is the On3 link - https://www.on3.com/news/gicarri-ha...tech-lsu-miami-purdue-stanford-virginia-tech/That's a very weird list of schools for a top Bball recruit.
UM-NIL?
Stanford/GT-Does this kid want to be an engineer?
VT-No idea
LSU?-They probably had his official visit during a big SEC night game.
Purdue-the natural selection
He might be losing that “unlimited money”Stanford gives me flashbacks to the Chasson Randle recruitment.
Miami is a little concerning only because NIL.
Still, I like where Purdue appears to stand in this recruitment.
Yep, we kept such a tight rein on Carsen Edwards, right? When discussing VT:
“I like their playing style because they let their guards have freedom. Their coaching staff continuously lets me know the value and impact that I will add to their program.”
If that is what he's looking for it doesn't bode well for Purdue.
True but Ivey and Carsen showed that Painter lets dudes get buckets when they are in the flow of the game. We also won’t have Edey which will change the dynamic of our offense. When discussing VT:

I don't disagree with your assessment of Painter not running a terribly guard friendly style, but I'd send him 30 minutes of Carson Edwards pretty much having the freedom to do whatever he wanted with the ball. Granted, Edwards earned that right, but Painter will allow if you produce. When discussing VT:

UM-NIL?Miami: “Great and successful program, great coaching staff and is a great city & school. They just made a final 4 run last year and drafted 2 players to the NBA.”
Purdue-the natural selection - how? Did TJD go to Clemson? Did Jaden go to ND ?
And he let Etwaun cook too.I don't disagree with your assessment of Painter not running a terribly guard friendly style, but I'd send him 30 minutes of Carson Edwards pretty much having the freedom to do whatever he wanted with the ball. Big Dog may not be all that much, but I thought I read somewhere a while back that Gelen was in Gicarri's ear about Purdue. Here is the On3 link - https://www.on3.com/news/gicarri-ha...tech-lsu-miami-purdue-stanford-virginia-tech/
He runs it down for each.
I know we all like to be "it is Big Dog's kid" but don't believe he is actively involved in his kids life. Think similar to Dale Davis and TJD.
I'd rather have a JaJuan Johnson than a Swanigan.Picking up on your last sentence. You could be right, but there are a lot of variables. We need a Big Dog, CE, Biggie, or JI type player to put us over the top in 2024 and replace what we'll be missing from Zach. We've been fortunate to have three AA in the last 5 years. It's like we've come to expect that someone is going to develop into that role, but it's hard to project a guy is going to be a top 10 player in the country before he even plays a college game.
We've only seen 5 of the guys projected to be on the roster in 2024 play and in my opinion none of them are All American caliber players. We'll certainly be solid, but we're going to need star power from one of the guys coming in. Maybe a sophomore Colvin or a freshmen Catchings? We'll see.
Smith
Loyer
Colvin
Heide
Waddell
Benter
Catchings
Furst
TKR
Berg
Burgess
Time will tell.
I liked JJ a lot but that's crazy talk. Was never the force that Caleb was.I'd rather have a JaJuan Johnson than a Swanigan.
And I'd take a Carsen Edwards over a Ivey, too.
Crazy talk? Nah.I liked JJ a lot but that's crazy talk. Was never the force that Caleb was.
Jajaun was also BTDPOTY. He crushed offensive game plans. He scored in double figures in every game his senior year. JJ was an unstoppable beast on both ends of thr floor. The only thing Caleb had over Jajuan was rebounding, but I'd take Jajuan over Caleb easily. Caleb was a fantastic player, but just don't like the recency bias against JJ. JJ was unstoppable.Crazy talk? Nah.
JJ was a beast: 20 ppg, 9 rpg, 2.3 bpg as a senior. Consensus AA and B1G POY
Completely agree. There have been a lot of guards under Painter who are role players within the system but the best players get as much freedom as anyone in the country. Pretty empty rhetoric from VT.I don't disagree with your assessment of Painter not running a terribly guard friendly style, but I'd send him 30 minutes of Carson Edwards pretty much having the freedom to do whatever he wanted with the ball. JJ was good for sure. And on my favorite team. But until Robbie got hurt he was a 3d or 4th option.Crazy talk? Nah.

That and that silly little NPOY award........ what bias is that again?Jajaun was also BTDPOTY. He crushed offensive game plans. He scored in double figures in every game his senior year. I think it's more of reflection of Painter not having recruited very many impact guards, especially NBA caliber. Moore, Edwards, Ivey. That's really about the list that jumps out at you.Completely agree. There have been a lot of guards under Painter who are role players within the system but the best players get as much freedom as anyone in the country. Pretty empty rhetoric from VT.
JJ could block 15 foot jump shots, run the floor better, and was more mobileI liked JJ a lot but that's crazy talk. Was never the force that Caleb was.
GT isn’t really weird is it? He’s from Georgia and they just hired a former really good NBA player as their head Coach. I would guess it will be either Purdue or the Rambling Wreck. That's a very weird list of schools for a top Bball recruit.
UM-NIL?

Frank Mason won NPOY Caleb’s sophomore year. That and that silly little NPOY award........ what bias is that again?
Oh, and he did it as a SOPH..............................
He has the skills and body that make him a good ball player. Like all I'm sure he wants to play after college. Unlike some that are really good, he wants to play D and that tells you he wants to win and so along with developing I imagine winning carries some weight. Watch a pick up game and the people playing some D want to win and are generally winners. So I'm guessing development, family and winning are the biggiesBingo!
Why in the world would he want to be an assistant instead of a head coach the last 15 years or so ?Had Cuonzo been associate head coach all these years,
very good chance Purdue would have made the Final Four, maybe won it all.
I believe that he hasn’t taken another job since Missouri. If a spot opens up at Purdue and he wants to come back, I would take him in a heartbeat. Why in the world would he want to be an assistant instead of a head coach the last 15 years or so ?

Pointing to a couple of guards in the last 17 years doesn't disprove the idea that Painter typically runs a fairly structured offense and unless your exceptional, you'll need to play within the system. After reading through his resume I doubt Harris will be one of the exceptions, if for no other reason he probably won't be the most talented guy on the team.I don't disagree with your assessment of Painter not running a terribly guard friendly style, but I'd send him 30 minutes of Carson Edwards pretty much having the freedom to do whatever he wanted with the ball. There's more than 1 NPOY award. Caleb won 1.Frank Mason won NPOY Caleb’s sophomore year.
JJ was on the best team in my lifetime at Purdue.JJ could block 15 foot jump shots, run the floor better, and was more mobile
in the half court, too. And JJ kept the 2010 Sweet 16 game against
Duke interesting until the final 7 minutes without Hummel losing by 13.
Duke went on the win the NC.
A fully healthy Purdue team lead by Swanigan lost to Kansas by 32 in the
in the 2017 Sweet 16. That Kansas team lost in the Elite 8 to Oregon.
I'd take JJ any day of the week.
Big shout out to Cuonzo Martin for getting JJ to Purdue. E'Twaun and Rob
followed suit. Had Cuonzo been associate head coach all these years,
very good chance Purdue would have made the Final Four, maybe won it all.
JJ was the better 2 way player. And a better fit in TODAY’S game, which is really what we’re discussing.JJ was good for sure. And on my favorite team. But until Robbie got hurt he was a 3d or 4th option.
Swanigan avg 18.5 and 12.5 AS A SOPHOMORE ........... And was NPOY........ I like JJ, but come on.
When Purdue does get a new HC, I hope they go away from the Keady/Painter coaching tree. If Painter retires without a couple of FF or NC, I think there's a need for a complete culture change in the program.I believe that he hasn’t taken another job since Missouri.
