Purdue in contact w/ Tyger Campbell

It is pretty obvious what CMP wants to do is find guys that can play a combo guard type role. Although Nojel is probably a pure PG, his size and athletic ability allows him to really play the 1-4 and defend that as well. If he can develop a consistent outside shot (+40%), think Vince with better handles and an ability to defend the 1-4. That's the type of player that'll make a lot of money in the NBA one day.
THAT is what I discussed the first game at Carmel. Develop a deadly stroke and the sky is the limit for this kid. He has great physical attributes, good ball handler, good vision and seemingly great attitude and willingness to learn. Develop a deadly stroke and he will make a LOT of money! I remember how excited I was that Robbie committed and played PG at 6'8" for Valpo and all the potential mismatches that were available...and we know, had Robbie not blown his knee twice where he would be. As a freshman I give an edge to Robbie on stroke and an edge to Nojel on athleticism...great teammate, vision, ball handling are probably a wash. The ceiling is higher for Nojel due to being a better athlete.

It's all good but I would advise you not to read into what some sites list a player it really means nothing. Many sites list my son PG ,SG or even small forward all bcuz of his size but what a kid might on a site doesn't mean that is how the coach gonna use him. I'll say this my son depending on matchups and game situations he can be used playing multiple positions and that is what painter has the luxury of doing when a kid can play multiple positions but painter recruited my son to also play point guard as well bcuz that's how he thinks the game and he is a pass 1st guard that get his teammates involved and sets his teammates up to score. Google some of his highlights you will see just how versatile he is and how well he passes the ball and how he handles the ball. Don't let the composites site suggest that is the position he plays only people who knows what position he will play are the staff on purdue and he will be playing probably 3 positions this season. Remember this he is only 18 and he will make his fair share of mistakes this season but what I no of my son he is a basketball player that will definitely help purdue this season. I'm just looking forward to the season this team got all the pieces to be really really good.
I'm right there with you. Matt has a more athletic team that is versatile as well. The only one I have NOT seen, that I'm excited to see and get the rust off is Haarms. Nojel and Haarms perhaps more than others provide an unusual combination of physical attributes and skill level

I'd give Nojel the edge on athleticism and ball handling at this point.

I'm sure Haas has the ability to knock that rust off pretty quick with those massive elbows lol

I believe you hear combination guard frequently associated with Purdue because a guard with the ability to get a team into offensive flow to initiate offense or more importantly to reinitiate offense when it breaks down is necessary in a motion offense. he must also be effective without the ball in his hands because in motion he will not dominate the ball. If you can add perimeter scoring ability and getting to the rim effectively you have the holy grail. I do think Painter looks for combos. He also looks for guys that may lean more to one or the other that he can teach to be both.
PJ was a good floor leader. He added a consistent 3 pointer and will drive more this season than in the past.
Carsen is a scorer who is adding point skills.
Nojel is a slasher and passer and either has (we have only seen a little bit) or will develop a 3 point shot.
Painter looks for combos but he will take one or the other and develop the part they are weak at.
Purdue offers an equal opportunity offense through mismatches and versatility to put yourself into a scoring position. We could see down the road...Haarms pulling someone out a bit and Nojel making hay inside for a few possessions. The reduced clock forces more to have to score and more to possibly create since reduction in time reduces the opportunity for less versatile players to "get in" a scoring position for them. This will be a fun year to watch the team and see how players grow

I like that we have a pretty good returning team coming back. It gives the young guys sometime to learn from the vets. Freshmen understandably want a lot of minutes right away. That works out sometimes but other times not as much. I think we have a good situation here especially when everyone understands their roles. The team seems to have good bonding, and I like that. Some really good players have used their first year or two to work on the college game. I think that is a plus more and more. Purdue has been good at that for the most part.

Next year Purdue loses a lot, but man will they be a fun team. All of the athleticism will shine, and all of the starters will have experience. The freshman will all be roll players, but earn plenty of minutes and experience. Even after losing 4 senior starters that have meant so much to the program, I am incredibly excited for the future.

This - especially the part I bolded. I have been impressed listening to him in interviews. It isn't just his willingness, it is his awareness of the areas he need to improve. He comes into a great situation with veterans ahead of him that can shoot so there isn't always pressure on him to hit the game winning jump shot - I can see Painter drawing up an iso play for him to take it to the rim but shooters waiting in the wings if it isn't there which we will end up questioning him for not passing in that situation and then discussing the merits that he is only a freshman and they make mistakes to being in awe when he makes and unbelievable drive and finish for the and 1 that wins us the game against Wisconsin on the road. END RANT

better athletes, but must grow in the skill to reach their potential. The seniors were skillful, but not as athletic. This senior class...not enough good things can be said about them..particularly the type of people they are.
