Purdue changing QBs

I'd like to think with a experienced line and a strong run game, Blough could have success in an offense that runs the read option. Too much is made of lack of arm strength. Brees, Manning, etc had same criticism. Not enough emphasis is on being a leader and a winner. Blough if I've read right has had winning experience in high school and hopefully can lead the Boilers as well.

I've been trying to pay attention to the speed of decisions for other team's QBs while executing the read option with the RB. AA seems to be so slow, effectively stopping all of the RBs momentum prior to handing him the ball. Have you all noticed this? Hopefully Blough will be quicker and not slow down the RBs.

Probably not with Shoop still here.

Right. It is really hard to put this all on Apple. He has some real struggles out there. Though, I really am disappointed in the offensive QB coaches and coordinator for not working on him during the offseason to ensure he is ready out there for this season. I am more disappointed that there was just no significant QB aptitude level improvement mentally than any results on the field. I can live with losses. I just can't live with a lack of improvement mentally from one yr to the next. I look to the coaches for that. Simple things like check down, using your eyes to fool the DB's, and less of a desire to run than pass.

Shoop's passing schemes are terrible. Somebody should be open on every pass play and the QB should have a pretty good idea who that is going to be before stepping to the line. There is no way a defense should be able to cover all receivers on a well designed pass play. But when Shoop's primary receiver is the tailback half the time something is severely lacking. It was time to switch the QB, but Shoop better stop this horizontal passing game because that needs scrapped like pronto. We need more tight end involvement and we need 5 and slant routes (like any normal college pass game), and even planned breakaway patterns when things break down. Far to often our receivers stop at the end of their pass play. They run some short route and that's it they stop. They need to go all out. I guarantee you if our receivers ran more breakaway patterns on busted pass plays defenses wouldn't be stacking the box like they do now. Stacking the box is a pure lack of respect for the passing game.

I am willing to cut Hazell some slack if he's willing to replace Shoop. Unfortunately, if he isn't willing to do that, than they will both end up in the unemployment line.

I would cut him some slack as well but he needs to replace both Shoop and the DC.

I'm curious and I will admit that I don't know much about the Elite 11 QB stuff. Does anyone recall Austin's performance there? What about Etling? Curious why people question his arm and accuracy. (I've seen the games, so I know the obvious answer ... but I don't believe we put him in good situations) Isn't Shoop to blame here? Aren't the Elite 11 quarterbacks supposed to be accurate?

I fully support the members of the team, but I cannot fathom how Shoop still has a job. As an offensive coordinator, isn't it his job to mold the offense around the talent we have in the system?

man, a lot of this sounds like the Philly fans this week. wrong kind of QB for the O, receivers can't get separation, don't stretch the field vertically, horizontal passing so the D packs the box and stuffs the run etc.

Then what do you think the problem is?

People think this offensive coordinator is the reason we have won 5 games into our 3rd season with this coaching staff?

Why is he still offensive coordinator? I've said over and over, usually a change is made with regards to coordinators if there is a rough first year or second year. For Hazell to be "ok" with Shoop going into the 3rd year - what does that say about Hazell?

They did not look too veteran on Saturday unfortunately. I would say that will be the case against the better DLs. However, Blough can scramble and create on the run, if they allow him to play outside the system.
did you thin VT's DL was weak?

Essentially at the Elite 11, Appleby was put there because of his work ethic...which nobody has ever questioned. He was probably the least talented of the QB's there but his classroom ethic is second to none and that's what lead Trent Dilfer to naming him the last of the Elite 11 QB's. He also has a good amount of moxy to him, but I think his calling is going to be as a QB coach and his ceiling is as an offensive coordinator. His attitude really reminds me of Lane Kiffin...very confident and has a swagger about him that leads him to be well liked and a natural leader but probably not an overall great player. I would love to have him as a graduate assistant and then letting him go off for a few years and returning to a capacity to coach.

I don't remember AA being there. I do remember seeing Blough. He finished 7th in the rankings there and looked great doing it. I was VERY surprised when AA won the starting job. IMO, Etling looked better than AA but that ship has long sailed. AA should play TE. I just hope the team doesn't mail it in and will give Blough their all for the rest of the season and let him develop. He can make plays.

Elite 11 is fine and dandy, but it's judging 17 year olds on a couple weekends. Blough was still rated a 3 star and #19 pro style QB by Rivals taking in a full body of work.

On ESPN, he was a 3 star, #35 at his position.

On 247, he was a 3 star, #26 at his position.

He was a good recruit, but I don't think 'elite' would describe his status.

He beat out a lot of guys at the Elite11 with 4 and 5 stars by their names. That says something to me. We'd kill for QBs like Brad Kayaa, deshaun Watson and others that were there. We MIGHT just have one.

Are any of those guys under the tutelage of Weird Beard?

How often do you get to rack and stack these kids side by side doing the same drills in the same conditions? You can poo poo it all you want, but we don't need 'elite' anyways. We need 'solid' and can improve from there.
