After a difficult stretch where they lost three of four games to slip from first place, Michigan State is coming off a tough, hard-fought victory in Champaign-Urbana over Illinois. Trailing by as many as 16 in the first half, the Spartans turned on the defensive screws and held the Illini to 34 points over the last 28 minutes (scoreless over the final 8+ minutes) to cruise to the win. Purdue lost its second straight game, at home to Wisconsin, who shredded the Boilers' defense for 58 scond-half points to win by 10. Both teams have challenging games remaining, and for Purdue, they likely need this game to realistically stay in the conference race for the title.
Unlike some previous seasons, Michigan State doesn't have a collection of big scorers, but they have a team who has consistent production on both ends of the floor. Jaden Akins leads the scoring threats with an average of 13.2 PPG on 42% shooting on the season. Jase Richardson scored 29 points in the recent win vs. Oregon and 11 on Saturday against Illinois. The freshman guard has netted an average of 10.3 PPG on 52% shooting. Jaxon Kohler averages 8.2 pts and 7.8 rebounds per game, and he had a double-double (23/10) leading Michigan State against Illinois. Jeremy Fears runs the show, and Tre Holloman is one of the threats off the bench that Purdue will need to focus on.
Michigan State is 17th overall in the KenPom ratings, 27th in offensive efficiency and 13th in defensive efficiency. The Spartans are slightly above average in pace, rated 150th in adjusted tempo. Purdue is rated 10th overall in KenPom, 8th offensively and 39th defensively. Adjusted tempo is still at a slow pace, but the Boilers are now up a bit at 275th.
These teams and especially these coaches know each other well and what their opponent wants to do and their tendencies.
According to Matt Painter - "
He [Tom Izzo]'s done a really good job with them. They have a tough group. They have good on-ball defenders; they have good size on the front line. Very competitive; very good defensive team. Do a good job of driving the basketball. You keep 'em off the glass; keep them out of transition. It's one of those things ....it's easy to know, but it's hard to do."
"
You know you're going to get a big time effort from each of those guys."
One of the big keys for Purdue is doing a better job defensively than last week, especially against Wisconsin. "
It's going to be a challenge for us to do a better job of guarding the basketball......so we're not living in help."
More from Matt Painter - "
Everybody wants to keep the ball out of the paint, but we really want to keep the ball out of the paint." "We have to be better on the basketball." We can't just get beat as bad as we did the other night and expect to have positive results." On some of those drives.....how do we correct that? Don't let them get an angle......then you're not fouling as much if you're in position." When you play from behind, you're gonna foul more.....and when you play from behind, you're not going to have good rebound balance. So now, when they make those shots, obviously you're in trouble, but them when they miss those shots, you're in trouble too....because you can't get the rebound.
They're one of the best rebounding teams in the country."
Against Wisconsin, I thought we had more concentration issues than physical issues.....yeah, their quick guys beat us off the dribble, but all their guys beat us....I wish it was just one guy or two guys, but it was all of our guys....."
This looks to be another physical conference grinder, where possessions are at a premium. Purdue has to continue to take care of the basketball and somehow has to find a way to somewhat neutralize Michigan State off the glass, which also means Purdue needs its front line to avoid foul trouble. The Spartans are not prolific from long-range but can hit some in spots. The Boilers will also have to make some of their 3-pt FG attempts - they should get some opportunities, but they can't expect to get many multiple opportunities on a possession. If there ever was a need for an all-hands-on deck supreme effort, this game is at or near the top of the list. Boilers definitely need a boost from the bench on both ends of the floor. Purdue will likely also need a really big game from one of its top scorers - this would be a great time for Braden Smith to have a bounce back game.
The beginning of an extended last stand for the Boilers with a trip to Bloomington looming next. Does Purdue get its biggest road win of the seaon tonight, or does the slide from the top continue for the Boilers? We shall see, starting in a couple of hours.
Boiler up, my friends.
