Purdue at Michigan State: MASTER DISCUSSION THREAD

I’m expecting a tight game and MSU is going to run our shooters off the 3pt line. We are going to have to play through contact and make tough shots. Teams have figured out that they can shutdown our big 3 and make anyone else beat us. Can’t have that happen and need production from everyone.

MSU isn’t a good 3pt shooting team so I expect them to hit at a high clip tonight because that’s what teams do against us.

TKR keys - stop falling away on free throws because we are going to need those shots. He also has to play smart and get their bigs into foul trouble to neutralize them.

Smith - if the team isn’t hitting, he has to hunt for his shot. Can’t let the game get away before knocking down shots.

Loyer - need a complete game from him. No more foul baiting, play through contact and get buckets.

The Bench - just score some points. Can’t expect to win if you literally put up nothing.

Unfortunately, I am not optimistic at all about Purdue’s chances in tonight’s game. Many things going against them.

As discussed here this week, fatigue may be impacting this team defense and overcoming opponent defensive adjustments on the offensive end.

Izzo knows CMP has had his number 9 out of the last 10 games, and one has to believe he has been telling his team the last couple of days that “he is sick and tired of losing to Purdue”. I expect he and all of EL to come ready to brawl tonight.

MSU has good quality depth in numbers, and he will be using that to wear out an already seemingly wore out, in spots, Purdue team.

He will also use his numbers right from the tip, to play very physical on defense, knowing he has many fouls to give to wear out our starters. I expect MSU will have more fouls called on them in the 1st half than Purdue will have, and knowing Izzo’s MO, he will use those foul numbers to create in the refs minds the need to even things up, whether called legitimately or not. The planned Izzo T is expected.

It works for him every game. He knows the refs can’t call every foul, and, that the refs want to keep the fouls even. So, I expect Furst, TKR and probably Braden to have foul issues early in the second half. That is where I hope CMP fights by wearing his steel blade tipped shoes, and acts like this is a must win, and stays on top of the refs as well.

We’ve seen this all before in EL, and with that, I am expecting a double digit loss tonight.

I sure hope I am wrong.

Their guards ball out, are tenacious on D, and shoot well from the line. They're bricklayers from deep. Classic Izzo team.

We've had their number lately, but the trend at Breslin is not as strong (we're 4-6 in the last 10 there).

Izzo knows our bench is non-existent and that Fletch is a defensive liability - I would bet he's going to have his guards pressure our wings on both ends, with the goal of getting our wings in foul trouble, forcing us to go to our horrific bench and enabling them to go to the line.

I expect pain but I hope I am wrong.

Hard to be confident in a W after the past 2 games, but man we could sure use one. If I were betting on it, I would take MSU and give the 3.5 I think we are in for a long night.

I’m super hyped for this game - it’s gonna be must watch. Smith is gonna be first team All American level tonight and we pull out a close one by 1 or 2. Don’t see us losing three in a row. I’m almost glad State won at Illinois. We are gonna play with motivation and desperation - good tune up for the Big Dance.

BTW give us the latest Bracketology as a 3 seed - I would take A&M as the 2. Want no part of the Johnnie’s or Houston’s D as 2 seeds. Long way to go to worry about any of that.

Man, watching the 2019 MSU at Purdue game now on the BTN. That Boiler team rebounded and hustled their asses off this game. And I’m not sure why I have italics now but I do.

I feel like Colvin rushes his shots - I still think there is gonna be a game coming up - maybe tonight - where he plays huge offensively.

Good evening ladies and gentlemen. Tonight, the #13-ranked Purdue Boilermakers (19-7; 11-4) visit the Breslin Center in East Lansing to take on the #14-ranked Michigan State Spartans (20-5; 11-3) in another key conference clash. Tip is scheduled for approximately 7:00 pm (Eastern time) with television coverage on Peacock. This is the lone regular season match-up between the two teams.

Projected Starting Line-ups:

Purdue - Trey Kaufman-Renn, Caleb Furst, CJ Cox, Fletcher Loyer, and Braden Smith

Michigan State - Jaxon Kohler, Szymon Zapala, Jase Richardson, Jeremy Fears, Jr., and Jaden Akins

____________________________

After a difficult stretch where they lost three of four games to slip from first place, Michigan State is coming off a tough, hard-fought victory in Champaign-Urbana over Illinois. Trailing by as many as 16 in the first half, the Spartans turned on the defensive screws and held the Illini to 34 points over the last 28 minutes (scoreless over the final 8+ minutes) to cruise to the win. Purdue lost its second straight game, at home to Wisconsin, who shredded the Boilers' defense for 58 scond-half points to win by 10. Both teams have challenging games remaining, and for Purdue, they likely need this game to realistically stay in the conference race for the title.

Unlike some previous seasons, Michigan State doesn't have a collection of big scorers, but they have a team who has consistent production on both ends of the floor. Jaden Akins leads the scoring threats with an average of 13.2 PPG on 42% shooting on the season. Jase Richardson scored 29 points in the recent win vs. Oregon and 11 on Saturday against Illinois. The freshman guard has netted an average of 10.3 PPG on 52% shooting. Jaxon Kohler averages 8.2 pts and 7.8 rebounds per game, and he had a double-double (23/10) leading Michigan State against Illinois. Jeremy Fears runs the show, and Tre Holloman is one of the threats off the bench that Purdue will need to focus on.

Michigan State is 17th overall in the KenPom ratings, 27th in offensive efficiency and 13th in defensive efficiency. The Spartans are slightly above average in pace, rated 150th in adjusted tempo. Purdue is rated 10th overall in KenPom, 8th offensively and 39th defensively. Adjusted tempo is still at a slow pace, but the Boilers are now up a bit at 275th.

These teams and especially these coaches know each other well and what their opponent wants to do and their tendencies.

According to Matt Painter - "He [Tom Izzo]'s done a really good job with them. They have a tough group. They have good on-ball defenders; they have good size on the front line. Very competitive; very good defensive team. Do a good job of driving the basketball. You keep 'em off the glass; keep them out of transition. It's one of those things ....it's easy to know, but it's hard to do."

"You know you're going to get a big time effort from each of those guys."

One of the big keys for Purdue is doing a better job defensively than last week, especially against Wisconsin. "It's going to be a challenge for us to do a better job of guarding the basketball......so we're not living in help."

More from Matt Painter - "Everybody wants to keep the ball out of the paint, but we really want to keep the ball out of the paint." "We have to be better on the basketball." We can't just get beat as bad as we did the other night and expect to have positive results." On some of those drives.....how do we correct that? Don't let them get an angle......then you're not fouling as much if you're in position." When you play from behind, you're gonna foul more.....and when you play from behind, you're not going to have good rebound balance. So now, when they make those shots, obviously you're in trouble, but them when they miss those shots, you're in trouble too....because you can't get the rebound. They're one of the best rebounding teams in the country."

Against Wisconsin, I thought we had more concentration issues than physical issues.....yeah, their quick guys beat us off the dribble, but all their guys beat us....I wish it was just one guy or two guys, but it was all of our guys....."

This looks to be another physical conference grinder, where possessions are at a premium. Purdue has to continue to take care of the basketball and somehow has to find a way to somewhat neutralize Michigan State off the glass, which also means Purdue needs its front line to avoid foul trouble. The Spartans are not prolific from long-range but can hit some in spots. The Boilers will also have to make some of their 3-pt FG attempts - they should get some opportunities, but they can't expect to get many multiple opportunities on a possession. If there ever was a need for an all-hands-on deck supreme effort, this game is at or near the top of the list. Boilers definitely need a boost from the bench on both ends of the floor. Purdue will likely also need a really big game from one of its top scorers - this would be a great time for Braden Smith to have a bounce back game.

The beginning of an extended last stand for the Boilers with a trip to Bloomington looming next. Does Purdue get its biggest road win of the seaon tonight, or does the slide from the top continue for the Boilers? We shall see, starting in a couple of hours.

Boiler up, my friends.

Well because they lost two in a row that should have been wins, typical Purdue will win this game. Took moneyline and the over…not a lot though!

This is the quintessential "embrace the physicality" game and face adversity to overcome. A great test/opportunity.....but yes, an unanswered question so far against a top team on the road.

As a competitor, you live for these games - maybe this is where they find it?

Not a must win. We’re going to make the tournament. Relative to our talent we’ve already massively over achieved imo. Outside of smith and renn there isn’t a ton of talent on the roster. Sometimes loyer will show up big.

Hey Beef.....see this one here.....28-footer, falling out of bounds, banked with no time left on the shot clock....

Good keys. Will need a good offensive game to compete as you laid out individually.

Key to me though is our D lately which has been as porous as swiss cheese.........which is highly problematic given MSU offense that not only relies, but excells at driving the lane.
