Purdue at Michigan State: MASTER DISCUSSION THREAD

I’m expecting a tight game and MSU is going to run our shooters off the 3pt line. We are going to have to play through contact and make tough shots. Teams have figured out that they can shutdown our big 3 and make anyone else beat us. Can’t have that happen and need production from everyone.

MSU isn’t a good 3pt shooting team so I expect them to hit at a high clip tonight because that’s what teams do against us.

TKR keys - stop falling away on free throws because we are going to need those shots. He also has to play smart and get their bigs into foul trouble to neutralize them.

Smith - if the team isn’t hitting, he has to hunt for his shot. Can’t let the game get away before knocking down shots.

Loyer - need a complete game from him. No more foul baiting, play through contact and get buckets.

The Bench - just score some points. Can’t expect to win if you literally put up nothing.

Unfortunately, I am not optimistic at all about Purdue’s chances in tonight’s game. Many things going against them.

As discussed here this week, fatigue may be impacting this team defense and overcoming opponent defensive adjustments on the offensive end.

Izzo knows CMP has had his number 9 out of the last 10 games, and one has to believe he has been telling his team the last couple of days that “he is sick and tired of losing to Purdue”. I expect he and all of EL to come ready to brawl tonight.

MSU has good quality depth in numbers, and he will be using that to wear out an already seemingly wore out, in spots, Purdue team.

He will also use his numbers right from the tip, to play very physical on defense, knowing he has many fouls to give to wear out our starters. I expect MSU will have more fouls called on them in the 1st half than Purdue will have, and knowing Izzo’s MO, he will use those foul numbers to create in the refs minds the need to even things up, whether called legitimately or not. The planned Izzo T is expected.

It works for him every game. He knows the refs can’t call every foul, and, that the refs want to keep the fouls even. So, I expect Furst, TKR and probably Braden to have foul issues early in the second half. That is where I hope CMP fights by wearing his steel blade tipped shoes, and acts like this is a must win, and stays on top of the refs as well.

We’ve seen this all before in EL, and with that, I am expecting a double digit loss tonight.

I sure hope I am wrong.

Their guards ball out, are tenacious on D, and shoot well from the line. They're bricklayers from deep. Classic Izzo team.

We've had their number lately, but the trend at Breslin is not as strong (we're 4-6 in the last 10 there).

Izzo knows our bench is non-existent and that Fletch is a defensive liability - I would bet he's going to have his guards pressure our wings on both ends, with the goal of getting our wings in foul trouble, forcing us to go to our horrific bench and enabling them to go to the line.

I expect pain but I hope I am wrong.
