Purdue at Maryland: MASTER DISCUSSION THREAD

Good evening and Happy New Year, ladies and gentlemen. It's back to conference play as the #1-ranked Purdue Boilermakers (12-1; 1-1) travel to College Park to take on the Maryland Terrapins (9-4; 1-1). Tip is scheduled for approximately 7:00 pm (Eastern time) with television coverage on Peacock.

The Boilers have lost their last four trips to the Xfinity Center, and although Maryland has been inconsistent this year, this shapes up to be another battle between these two teams. Maryland went unbeaten at home in conference play last season, so expect the Terrapins them to really battle to try and get a big win and reassert themselves as a conference and NCAA tournament contender.

Projected Starting Line-Ups:

Purdue - Zach Edey, Trey Kaufman-Renn, Lance Jones, Fletcher Loyer, and Braden Smith

Maryland - Julian Reese, Donta Scott, Jordan Geronimo, DeShawn Harris-Smith, and Jahmir Young (probable - game time decision/recovering from flu)

_________________________________________

Maryland is 8-0 at home, and the Terrapins are 0-2 in games decided by 3 points or fewer. Maryland comes into this game having won five straight games, with the most notable win being over UCLA 69-60 on the road on Dec. 22. They are coming off a game without star guard Jahmir Young illness. Center Julian Reese stepped up with 18 points and 10 rebounds, while Jahari Long added 15 points and four assists.

Young is expected to play tonight, which will be a big boost to Maryland if he is close to 100%. He has a career-high 37 points against UCLA and makes Maryland much tougher to defend. He leads the Terps with 19.3 points and 4.1 assists per contest. Reese is having a solid season, averaging 14.3 points and 9.7 rebounds on 52.1% shooting (58.7% FT), but will have his hands full with Zach Edey.

Maryland is averaging just 73.2 points per game (228th) on 41.5% shooting and the long-range shooting has been very poor at 27.5% (344th), so they are overdue for a break-out game from deep. The Terrapins are solid defensively, allowing 63.4 points per game on 40.2% shooting and 34% from three-point range. According to KenPom, Maryland is a strong 25th in Adjusted Defensive Efficiency, but just 134th in Adjusted Offensive Efficiency.

This is Purdue's second true road game of the season, and although the Boilers have had some excellent non-conference wins over several highly-ranked opponents, they dropped their only road game so far @ Northwestern. As many have said, life on the road in the Big Ten is difficult, and there are no easy ones....and the Boilers and Matt Painter know all too well what Maryland is capable of - just go back to last season, which featured most of these same players on both squads.....Purdue had a 8-pt second half lead erased in moments and ended up on the wrong end of a 14-pt game.

A great test to see just where this Purdue team is at the start of the conference resumption.....they will really need to execute on both ends of the floor and deal with a hostile crowd.....they also should be used to the notion by now that they will continue to get every opponent's best game/shot, and they can't afford to let up intensity. Braden Smith was one of the few Boilers last season @ Maryland who had a good game - he'll need to repeat that and get some help from his teammates. Purdue went cold in the second half @ Northwestern - they'll need to hit a little better tonight to keep the Terrapins at bay. They'll also need to limit the turnovers to keep Maryland from making the sort of runs that can take over a game. Keep Young under control and get an edge on the glass - it's a lot of the same ingredients for the recipe

This game shapes up to be a hard fought contest, and I think it will be the effort plays that separate the teams.....can the Boilers keep the positive momentum on track as the new year starts? We shall see, starting in a couple of hours or so.

Boiler Up, my friends...

Smith struggling against size and athleticism. It’s caused him to be off his game a bit. Missing some open guys too.

Offense is playing a little too rushed right now. Show more patience and something will open up for Zach.
