Purdue at Marquette: MASTER DISCUSSION THREAD

I have read many articles and press conferences that have said Burgess is out of shape and can only play 3-5 minute spurts before he gassed out.

I have to wonder. He’s a freshman under age 20. He’s not some 48 year old. How did he get so out of shape that he can’t play more than 5 minutes? In high school, did he just walk down the court while his team held the ball waiting for him to arrive?

Is Burgess still in recovery from some injury?

Is there a reason or explanation?

Nothing has changed since UConn game. Strong athletic guards who defend are the antidote for Purdue. No Edey to lean on, this team is going to take some lumps.

Road game against a team we barely beat with Edey last year. Jones triple double. Tough ask especially coming off a huge win.

the whole thing about guard play is our guards have to score to offset their liabilities on D. So when the other team's guards score we are in a bit of trouble.

He was injured out for a year, have a clue?

Furst and Berg seem like class act guys, Furst impressive pre med, so not upset with them as student athletes, as a Boiler , just wish we had them backing up Jacobsen

They are doing their best, but it’s a big boy league and need better at 5 for this year to go anywhere,

We were exposed

Hope Paint has some ideas how to put a bandage on this

don't know, but this whole idea of we're stacked w/ bigs when we lose out on a guy like SWA is something I'm not buying. Our guards get beat off the dribble and no one is there to block shots, no leapers. Same on O , Furst had 2 underneath and didn't go strong to rim because he can't

At least it wasn't a court rush..........

I didn't think Purdue wanted it enough to get a road win tonight and then folded. No fight. Will be interesting to hear Painter post-game on teams effort.

Showed youth being flat post Alabama IMO.

November road game against a team who wanted revenge from last year and played like it. We have major issues at the 5 obviously but these games make you better. It’s why we are playing a tough non conference schedule - learn from it and keep improving. If we hadn’t beaten #2 Alabama last game the sky would be falling but it’s not!

I love the defense and rebounding. His shot will come back around.

I just wish he was a threat to take his man of dribble and score ar rim when his shot isn't falling.
This is a real thing. Colvin just can’t dribble the ball. He tried a drive tonight, which I think may have been the first time I’ve ever seen him dribble, and it just resulted in an ugly miss. He has no offensive game whatsoever beyond catch and shoot from 3. Same with Heide. They are what they are.

Purdue 1-1 in Quad 1 games, no disgrace in that.....and Painter is taking a page out of Izzo's book with the non-conference scheduling. Really got sped up and unwound big time tonight. The last three years was somewhat improbable to go unscathed. Sometimes, you get beat up a little, but it hardens you for March/April.

We shall see.

he tried twice, in the first half he got caught in the air and threw a bad pass , also went to the basket and tried a layup to no avail

The issue was that our guards couldn't get free. We were receiving the ball well above the three point line with a man right up on us. That ball pressure made entry passes hard, and because they were quicker than us at almost every position, most of our players couldn't penetrate at all.

Plus way too few times could we shake free for wide open shots.

So few post ups and dump downs, few successful drives, and few open threes leads to a really bad night. Plus we got outrebounded and the turnovers, steals and blocks.

Thought the defense was respectable, but man the offense was horrible. I just don't think this Berg experiment makes sense anymore, and Furst isn't athletic enough for teams like Marquette.

I still maintain our best shot is TKR in the middle and four wings. Even with all the turnovers and whatnot we still didn't give up a ton of points, and it's not like Berg or Furst are really any better at rim protection than TKR right now. Whatever they are giving us isn't worth what we lose. Obviously they need to play some minutes since TKR can't play 40 a night, but I think starting Berg doesn't make much sense anymore.

Marq starts 3 seniors and 2 juniors.

We start 3 juniors a freshman and a sophomore that is starting for an injured freshman.

We should be going TKR at the 5 in games like this. Refs allowed them to foul constantly, but they played great defense and had us perfectly countered rotation and close out wise.

We rebounded better which was good to see, but we have got to defend the ball much better and more physical. Teams just get to the rim at will amd it always seems we are terrified of having a foul called on us so we keep our hands off completely while other teams use 2 hands constantly on our guards.

Anyways, we arent a title team this year, but next year we will be. I see elite 8 as the ceiling amd I believe in these guards and wings esp smith and loyer. Just meed someone to step up at the 5. Furst has gotten worse every year somehow, like, slower and less athletic. Its crazy. Hopefully Burgess gets in shape as more times goes on and becomes that guy because furst and berg aint it

I agree with the Elite 8 ceiling this year and the title team in 2026.

This is not the trust paint mentality

This kind of game is tailor-made for Myles/Cam to step up on offense….

totally disagree!
Get them bloodied and learning what it takes!!!
Disagree on Cam and Colvin.
Other that shooting open 3s and the occasional backdoor, neither of them have the ability to get their own shot and neither has the ball handling to penetrate and get to the rim.
Colvin tried it one time along the base line and got hung up, resulting in a TO.

Been saying this for a while Both guys can jump, but neither can dribble or penetrate. They're both spot up 3 pt shooters with the occasional fast break points. But neither can create or shake good man D.

Don't totally disagree, Lenny - Cam Heide can flash with the ball from the wing, and does have the ability to finish through/with contact, IMO.

Biggest takeaways I saw - Purdue needs a little more poise on the road, Marquette is good, Boilers are a work-in-progress but definitely a good team (not top 10).....future/potential is bright. No big surprises to me.

JMHO

Now....back to the grindstone, haha....
