I think Purdue wins this one. Not sure Marquette has the horses but crazy things happen on the road in college basketball. Smith will have a big game and I think flirt with a triple double and maybe even get one. I think they focus more on TKR and that ends up leaving Loyer open.

The game will hinge on turnovers and hitting from 3. If we don’t hit double digit turnovers and we hit close to 40% from 3 I think we win without a lot of difficulty. Just my thoughts. I believe the defensive combination thrown at Jones takes him out of his game a bit. It’d be great if we can hold him to a game similar to what Sears had!
If we hold turnovers to single digits and hit >38% threes, damn, we better win!
It will be interesting to see how well the freshmen hold up under the pressure tonight.

Good evening, ladies and gentlemen. Tonight, The #6-ranked Purdue Boilermakers (4-0) travel to Milwaukee, Wisconsin for its first road test this season to take on the #15-ranked Marquette Golden Eagles (4-0) in Fiserv Forum. Tip off is expected for around 9:00 pm (Eastern time) with television coverage on FOX Sports 1 (FS1) network. This should be a very good battle between two teams that have also faced off each of the last two seasons. Purdue defeated Marquette last season in the championship game of the Maui Classic (in Honolulu), and during the season before that, Purdue edged Marquette in Mackey Arena. Both games have been spirited contests, and Marquette has been a challenge in the paint for Purdue quite often.

Purdue is coming off an impressive win at home last Friday against previously #2-ranked Alabama, and Marquette picked up a quality road win at Maryland. Both teams are 4-0.
Purdue's junior forward Trey Kaufman-Renn scored a career-high 26 points leading Purdue past Alabama, and the Boilers were outstanding in protecting possessions with just three turnovers that game. Senior guard Kam Jones led Marquette in its win, as he scored 18 of his 28 points in the second half in a game that featured nine ties and 13 lead changes.
Marquette lost two of its stars from last season's squad, guard Tyler Kolek (15.3 PPG and 7.7 APG) and center Oso Ighodaro (13.4 PPG and 6.9 RPG) but returned its top scorer Jones (17.2 PPG) and a couple of key contributors in forward David Joplin (10.8 PPG) and guard Stevie Mitchell (8.8 PPG and 1.9 SPG). Junior guard Chase Ross has also progressed since last season. The Golden Eagles rank 21st nationally in the KenPom ratings, including 24th in offensive efficiency and 22nd in defensive efficiency. The Golden Eagles only shoot 30.4 percent from beyond the arc (257th) but shoot 60.2 percent from inside the arc (31st). They also rank 24th in assist-to-turnover ratio (1.77).
Purdue ranks 12th in the country in KenPom, including 3rd in offensive efficiency and 65th in defensive efficiency. The Boilers are 20th in field goal percentage (52.9%) and 7th in three-point percentage (46.0%). They're also ranked 21st in assist-to-turnover ratio (1.85).
Both of these teams rely heavily on starters for point production, although there have been flashes from the respective benches. Purdue will need its usual strong games from Braden Smith, Trey Kaufman-Renn and Fletcher Loyer. Those three combine for 51 points per game, and only two other players average more than seven points (Myles Colvin and C.J. Cox). They will still need valuable contributions from several other players to keep the Golden Eagles at bay. These teams are closely matched, so it very well could come down to a handful of possessions - either key stops or makes or some combination could likely be the difference.....extra possessions from the glass or turnovers for either squad could also be the difference - in short, Purdue needs at least the same level of effort and energy it had against Alabama and maybe more given it's a true road game - definitely a different atmosphere/environment for Purdue's newcomers.
Marquette is also one of the more athletic teams on Purdue's schedule, and although Purdue had a solid game against Alabama - the Crimson Tide did get some good opportunities, and Purdue's defense still remains a work in progress. They will have a similar challenge tonight. Kam Jones is Marquette's primary weapon on offense and has to be the focus of Purdue's defense. With the departure to the NBA of Tyler Kolek, Jones has seamlessly transitioned to the point guard role, averaging 24 points on 64% shooting with five assists. The trio of David Joplin, Chase Ross and Stevie Mitchell can also provide additional scoring for Marquette. Those three account for over 35 points per game, but the most trustworthy scorer is Ross, who averages 13 points with providing a strong two-way defensive presence.
Joplin has gotten up plenty of shots this year but is shooting just 31% from the field and 21% from 3. If he gets going, however, the Golden Eagles will be very difficult to stop. If the starters struggle, though, it could be a long night for the Golden Eagles.
Look for Purdue to work a lot of the pick-and-roll with Braden Smith, and also expect Matt Painter to use more of his line-up that features Trey Kaufman-Renn at the center position. Smith really needs to exploit the defense and shoot a better percentage than last game. Marquette has also hurt Purdue on the glass in previous games, but that may not be as much of an advantage in this game. The Golden Eagles rank 216th in defensive rebounding percentage and 193rd in offensive rebounding percentage. Purdue absolutely cannot afford to lose any edge/battle on the glass - they did fairly well to stay close to even with Alabama - need even better tonight.
This should be a very hard-fought and entertaining game. Can the Boilers keep things rolling in their first test on the road against a very challenging opponent? We shall see starting in a few hours.
