Good afternoon ladies and gentlemen. Today, it's the #13-ranked Purdue Boilermakers (19-8; 11-5) visiting the Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall in Bloomington to take on the Indiana Hoosiers (15-11; 6-9). Tip is set for approximately 1:30 pm (Eastern time) with television coverage on CBS. This is the second match-up of the annual series this season, as Purdue defeated Indiana 81-76 in West Lafayette back on January 31.
Expected Starting Line-ups:
Purdue - Trey Kaufman-Renn, Caleb Furst, CJ Cox, Fletcher Loyer, and Braden Smith
Indiana - Mackenzie Mgbako, Luke Goode, Oumar Ballo, Anthony Leal, Trey Galloway
_______________________________
Indiana has lost six of its last seven, but they have been off for 10 days since dropping its home game against UCLA, 72-68. The Hooisers' lone win in the recent stretch was a solid performance on the road against Michigan State. They also gave the Boilers a very competitive game last time around with a good chance to prevail in the last minute, coming up just short.
Oumar Ballo leads Indiana's team with 13.5 points, 9.4 rebounds, and 1.6 blocks per game. Mackenzie Mgbako (13 ppg, 4.8 rpg), Malik Reneau (12.7 ppg, 5.6 rpg), and Myles Rice (10.8 ppg) all add balance at the top. Malik Renau struggled last time out with foul trouble and coming back off injury, although he should get a lot of action and be more effective in the paint, where Indiana has an edge. Myles Rice also struggled in the previous game, but he should be one of the first options off the Hoosiers' bench if he doesn't start. Indiana had inserted Luke Goode and Trey Galloway in the starting line-up, and they both had particularly good games against Purdue last time out, so expect to see them play a lot today.
As a team, Indiana is 135th averaging 75.6 ppg, 110th making 46.1% from the field, but only 304th shooting 31.5% from beyond the 3-pt arc. Indiana is currently 57th overall in the KenPom ratings, 61st in offensive efficiency and 54th in defensive efficiency. The Hoosiers play with an above average pace, rated 128th in adjusted tempo.
Purdue is currently rated 13th overall in the KenPom ratings, 8th in offensive efficiency and 47th in defensive efficiency. The Boilers have an adjusted tempo rating of 285th.
Expect Purdue to have another big battle on its hands in this latest installment of the rivalry, which is Indiana coach Mike Woodson's last, as he will step down as coach at the end of the season. His teams are 2-1 against Purdue in Bloomington, and this season's team is still looking to make a late surge to try and make the NCAA Tournament field. The crowd will be a big boost to the home team, and it will also be the first trip to Bloomington for CJ Cox, Gicarri Harris, and Raleigh Burgess......nothing can truly prepare for the experience until you're thrown into the fire. Braden Smith and Fletcher Loyer found that out two years ago. We'll see how the freshman handle it today. It's been a steep learning curve for them on the road. Gicarri Harris did have a big 9 points and 3 rebounds for Purdue in 22 minutes of action off the bench last time around, along with some steady defense, including on the key possession for Indiana at the end of the game.
Purdue had trouble inside with Ballo last time around, and Trey Galloway caused the Boilers' defense a lot of problems off of ball screen action and drives to the rim or in the paint. I expect Indiana to continue to try and exploit that action until Purdue shows it can stop it. Luke Goode also was successful from long range - if that continues today, it could be a long day for Purdue. Mackenzie Mgbako was terrific in the last matchup with Purdue, with a game-high 25 points, scoring from everywhere on the court, and the Boilers struggled for answers to deal with him.
Trey Kaufman-Renn took advantage of the absence of Malik Reneau and had a really good game with 23, including the winning basket inside of 10 seconds, despite some foul trouble. Purdue needs more of the same today and absolutely cannot afford any foul trouble with him or Braden Smith, who led Purdue with 24 in the last game. The Boilers can exploit some advantages offensively, but it's likely how well they do on defense and avoiding turnovers that will determine their fate today.
Some thoughts from Coach Matt Painter -
On Myles Colvin, who took a big hit on a screen from Michigan State player Szymon Zapala, which knocked him to the floor and out of the game.- "
It just jarred him....obviously when you get hit like that, things get a little fuzzy. He's fine now."
On the defensive struggles the last few games - "
It's really important for us to do a good job on the ball....and then whatever we're dong whether it's ball/screen defense or post defense, doing a good job of keeping the ball out of the paint..... We have to do a better job with our ball/screen defense."
"
Understanding who you are, individually....and playing to your strengths......both offensively and defensively. I think our offense has been pretty good, I don't think we've been bad in those three games.....but defensively, we have fouled too much. On the ball, we've done at times an O.K. job with it, and then other times we just haven't, where we're in help too much.....So, it comes down to each guy doing a better job on the basketball, and each guy staying with what we've decided to do away from the ball. At times we're inconsistent with what we're doing away from the basketball....gotta be consistent so you keep everybody connected."
Braden Smith is also just seven assists away from tying former Boilermaker, Bruce Parkinson's school record for career assists. Parkinson had 690 assists in 112 games played. Braden Smith stands at 683 assists through 101 games played. Additional Matt Painter thoughts on that -
"
He's a great passer - he walked in the door with that way. He's got great vison; he's got great skill set. He's earned it....he's figured out how to play with different teammates, different skill sets. Getting the ball to guys where they're comfortable....get guys in scoring position....and having that feel.....and he can do it in a lot of different ways.....whether he's playing in transition, out of ball screens, or just moving the basketball......
You play to the strength of your players - at least that's my philosophy - we haven't had someone like that - with that passing ability, and he can hit the pull-up."
Even though Indiana is down in the standings a ways (in a tie for 11th with USC), this game is always a challenge, and in some ways maybe tougher than the previous three games. Purdue will have to play with poise in a very hostile environment - they will absolutely have to play more connected on defense and embrace the physicality better than the last several games.
Can the Boilers sum up the kind of effort they need to get things back on track and have a last push to try and stay in contention for a conference championship......or does the slide continue against a game Indiana Hoosiers' squad?
We shall see, coming up in a few hours.
Boiler up, my friends.
