Proof that Smith can dunk

Kid is going to be much better than Hunter and IT.
I am hopeful of that. Tough for me to gage high school success to Big Ten success, but I definitely like what we are seeing in the multiple clips of his play. Were Hunter and IT PG’s in high school? I thought they were off guards.

I think Hunter was more of an off-guard, yeah.

Braden is clearly much more of a true PG, but is also much more explosive and a much better shooter.

His height is what it is, but the fact that he's explosive, strong, and can shoot it from deep, I think, will make up for it.

Y’all should be ashamed of yourselves. Making fun of a person with mental deficiencies is abhorrent.

The kid can play...and, the chip with which he plays with on his shoulder is impressive as well.

I don't know that I would say that I was truly skeptical necessarily, but, I will absolutely admit to being more than pleasantly surprised in having watched him live a couple of times.

He is a true PG in every sense, but, one with a scoring mentality...and, more importantly, scoring ability.

His height is indeed what it is, but, to your point, he makes up for it with other things...and, I love the energy and enthusiasm...and just competitiveness.

Great stroke AND finishes well. That would be enough on it's own to be excited about. But this kid want's to make the assist more than the hoop. And that's a beautiful thing.

The thing about Carsen is that he wasn’t a good passer or defender. He was an unbelievable scorer and shot maker and could beat everyone off the dribble. Smith is one of the best passers I have seen come out of Indiana in years and still can shoot the lights out and is a great ballhandler. He will be fun to watch the next four years. Loyer and Heide will have lots of open shots for four years. Mixing those three with Colvin and Gibbs-Lawhorn will be exciting

To Edwards credit though, he needed to score 30 on a lot of nights because if Cline wasn't hitting, he didn't have other big offensive fire power threats to take the burden off him. (Haarms, Eastern, or Eifert).
I just think it's tough to rely on true freshman like Loyer and Smith to carry much of that load. Especially considering neither is viewed (nationally and by other P5 coaches) as elite talents.

What Edwards had that was very rare was an elite ability to create his own 3 point shot. Smith appears to a great shooter, but I don’t think it’s fair to compare his scoring ability with that of Carsen. As you point out, he’s his own player with his own strengths.

I'll be very interested to see how Smith does at the B10 level. Will he be able to handle the defense of bigger, stronger, faster players. Will he be able to get his own shot, get into the lane and finish?
I'd be very interested to know what kind of feelers Painter has out there for guard talent looking at the portal at the end of this year.

I'd bet we bring in a grad-transfer in the Octeus/Proctor role. Painter's a fan of that and with only 1 senior on the team next year that'd be a good spot to bring them in

I wish he would have done it this year.....
If Hunter had simply played as he has in the past, it would not be near as important as it looks to be at the moment.

I still think it is a real long shot to get a guy next year...I do think they will look for someone, but, my guess is it is someone way closer to Sterling Carter or Errick Peck than anyone in the mold of the guy they are looking to replace in Ivey.

Smith is every bit as good as Hulls was, and, Hulls was the starting PG on what was at the time the #1 team in the country. He is similar to Craft...another guy that played on the #1 team in the country. PJ was the starting PG on a team that was one of the best in the country. He has some Carson Cunningham to his game...starting PG on a team that was a couple of points shy of a FF.

He is not going to dominate as he does in HS, but, he absolutely is going to be able to play...and, he may even be really good for that matter ala some of those other guys.

We're kidding ourselves if there's

A) A guard like Ivey available in the portal

and B) He chooses to come to Purdue versus going to Duke, Kentucky, UNC, UCLA, Gonzaga etc

THAT is exactly the point(s) that I have been trying to make, albeit not nearly as succinctly as you just did.

Only saw Smith in person, play against Homestead. He came out in the 2nd Q, down 16 - 7. Took 3 straight top of the key 3's from increasingly farther out. Nothing but net. The last one like Carsen would do on occasion - from a different area code.

My buddy said that he must have not been happy with the 7 point 1st.

He is Scott Skiles-like, He does what he needs to do to win and usually makes those around him better. And gets under the skin of the opponents and their fans.

He's like Chuck Norris - he's not worried about the Big Ten, the Big Ten needs to be worried about him.

And no, I'm not related to him.

Great call actually on the Skiles reference...yet another guy whose game his is similar to.

Baylor has a pretty good corner on the market for portal guards at the moment as well.

Guards like that don’t go into the portal- they go into the draft.

I just saw something about the anniversary of his 30 assist game!

and he was a dead eye shooter.(Indiana kid) One of the best, most skilled college players of all time that I've seen personally. Scored 39 pts in the state final game to win. Watched him drop 40 in college, was it against us?
Despite his physical limitations (short, white mans disease, not fast) he STILL had a nice nba career.
Smith being mentioned in the same sentence 4 years from now would be amazing.

That would be high praise, indeed. Many are all over the map (usually negative) when it comes to reflections on Scott Skiles, but that kid was as tough as they come.....I remember watching that '82 IHSAA Tournament where he took Plymouth all the way. And he managed to carve out a nice NBA career for himself as the game was transitioning.

I do think Mr. Smith will be a welcomed addition as a Boiler and will fit in very well. It's been a little rocky the last month, but CMP still has the program overall on a very good trajectory, IMHO.

Any news on Camden Heide? I haven’t found anything about him at his new school in Utah. A couple things in November but nothing recently. Is he hurt?

Why wouldn't he come to Purdue? (and please, for the love of God, don't say "because he wouldn't be a good fit"....)
CE and Ivey have both proven that Painter will give a high volume shooter/scorer the opportunity to do so if he produces.
Next year is a great oppty for someone looking to make a 1 year impact.
The competition to start and play big minutes will consist of a couple of freshman, and a couple of unproductive upperclassman.
The right transfer could easily be out leading scorer next year.

For sure. Some fans here that haven't had the opportunity are going to learn what it means to have a true floor general.
