Freshman that could potentially get playing time…
DB- Koy Beasley, Luke Williams, Leontre Bradford, D’Mon Marable
-DB room needs depth help so wouldn’t surprise me to see a couple of these guys see the field.

TE - Tayvion Galloway
-Already built like a college athletic
WR - Hamilton, Rigby, Harris
-receiver room is wide open so take your pick.
K - Spencer Porath
-everyone knows this team needs kicking help and I believe Purdue got a good one here.

-50%+ of the potential starters/ 2 deeps are transfers.
-The OL, WRs and DBs have a lot to prove! It’ll be interesting to see who becomes the starters at those positions.
-The Portal opens back up in the spring so it wouldn’t surprise me if the roster changes a little bit between now and then.

Not to be critical of anyone, but it will be interesting to see how far from people's projections the team starting in the first game will actually be. I think most people don't really know what to expect, except a lot of changes. However, early opinions are always interesting.

Just realized we don't even have a punter lol

Freehill is back I think but not on scholarship. Hopefully Porath wins that job decidedly.

Corey Stewart is going to start and Mbow move back to guard. Jenkins at ILB. Beasley in Allen's spot.
You are probably right with Stewart. Seems like the team has a lot of tackles compared to guards. Start your best 5 and figure out positions later.
Sounds like Beasley is going to be a good one. I was hoping he would have enrolled early but he didn’t so I didn’t put him as starter right away but I can definitely see him starting at some point.
No disrespect to Jack but Walters could find a walk on punter off the street to do just as good as him, haven’t been impressed at all with the punting the last few years so hopefully they can find a gem to fill that role.

Admittedly i know little about Jahmal Edrine, but it seems folks were expecting big things from him. I'd be a bit surprised if he starts based on coming off an ACL and who else we've got now.

I don’t know if he’ll be the #1 option or anything like that I was just listing the top receivers….not many to pick from.
From what I heard about him last year in camp is that he was in the running to start and was doing great things until the ACL thing happened. It’ll definitely be interesting to see how the WRs shake out.

Yeah Ansell was not good at all. The new STC was in Australia recently looking for a guy.

Why do you assume Moussa will start ? Is this the whole “Moussa and Mbow” thing where you group them together because Dale finally had a couple young guys with talent and potential?

Mbow has been outstanding. Moussa hasn’t gained starting big ten offensive line strength YET and doesn’t even reach the threshold of run blocking okay for a pass blocker.

Also, here are the positions on defense along with the starter in 2023… listing a bunch of guys as “db” isn’t helpful

Buck Scourton
Defensive END Langham
NOSE tackle Brevard
Defensive TACKLE Nichols
Fox Jenkins
Star allen
ILB karlaftis
Cylinder Kane
CB wilson
Deep safety Thienemann
CB brown

Brevard and Omonode were both Bose tackles. Omonode will back him up. He won’t play next to him cause some people think it will be neat

Left guard is typically the more mobile guard. RG usually anchors the run game. RT is usually your biggest tallest player. Why would you list bouldin, who is 6’7” 350 at left guard?

A good start. I wonder who from the 2024 freshmen class will start (This year’s Dillon T). C Walters does not shy away from putting in freshmen. Luke Williams is getting a shoulder injury and probably will not be ready, but would be good in strong safety position. Might be surprises with the freshmen WR.

Gosh, with 50% or more starters and 2 deeps being transfers, I sure hope that we can get all of the kinks worked out before the 2024 season starts!!!!!

I know there’s a more specific position names but I am keeping it simple and just going off what the depth chart sheet says 🤷🏼‍♂️.
Moussa/Stewart best man plays but I can see Stewart starting too. Bouldin is a big boy that had a solid offer list so wherever he can fit in would be helpful. The OL has a lot of moving parts so it’s hard saying who starts where it’s just a guess. Find the best combo and roll with it. Hopefully the new guys can help out right away!

I’m excited for how the OL shakes out. I think we recruited over a lot of our current OL and this will be deeper than I can remember. I don’t expect tanona to contribute this first year and hope he surprises everyone. But Stewart, wingfield should be major contributors and boudin, green, and sales will provide good depth. It’s been reported Mbow May move back to G with Wingfield competing for the RT position.

Here is how I see the starting OL as of today

LT Stewart
LG Grant
C Hartwig
RG Mbow
RT Wingfield

Here is how I see the starting OL as of today

LT Stewart
LG Grant
C Hartwig
RG Mbow
RT Wingfield
Wingfield is 6’4” 289. No way he’s playing RT in the big ten.

Here’s where they’d all fit by position:

LT - Stewart (primary), Moussa
LG - Grant, Wingfield
C - Hartwig, Liston
RG - Mbow (primary), Griffin
RT - Stewart (secondary), Mbow (secondary), Bouldin, Green, Sales

Here are your issues. Moussa has never proven he’s very good. If he makes a big step, you can move Stewart to RT. Stewart had good showings per pff against Georgia and Kentucky. So he can play here. If Moussa didn’t make a leap, Stewart needs to play LT.

If Stewart is at LT and you put MBow at RG, now you’re relying on a guy who didn’t play well at IU or one of two jucos to be your RT. Illinois got two similarly rated juco Right OL and waited until about game 8-9 for them to get comfortable.

If you put Mbow at RT, Luke Griffin is your starting RG (need size and power there, RG anchors your run game). Griffin just isn’t any good. Hasn’t proven it yet anyway.

They went out and got some guys you pay for. Way too early to decide who starts where outside of Hartwig and maybe Stewart or a healthy Mbow.

I see Rivals has dropped our incoming QB from TX down to 3*. Ranked No. 95 in the state of Texas

Looks like the typical rating crap. If he goes to Purdue, drop a star, but if he goes to a higher rated team after pledging to Purdue give him another star.

Pretty sure he was ranked a top 15 Qb when the season ended and is now 30?!
So he has a great senior year and gets invited to play in the All American game but his ranking drops…ok got it 🤷🏼‍♂️🤦🏼‍♂️

I only saw a highlight of the TD throw. Did you watch it all? Can he move? Looks like he’s about 6-3 250
I saw 2 drives. He’s not mobile.

Good arm and seems like he can read a defense somewhat. I think he plays here and plays decently in a year or two. Not a performance that I would have dropped him in the rankings at all for though. From what I hear he’s gained 20 pounds through the year and not all good weight. That might account for it…that and Rivals has ppl embedded at those bowl practices and they might have seen something they didn’t like.

Post Covid, I think these games have taken a hit prestige and talent wise. It’s more top 250-300 guys where it used to only really be top 100-150 types. With NIL stuff, guys asking to be paid to show…or told not to show by their camps in case of injury.

He’s a good player though…but in todays age he’s a coin flip to stick around, no matter how good or bad he is!

in the latest Hammer and Rails pod, Drew did a good job breaking down the 2024 Defensive End position.

in 2022, C Walters Illinois defense had a lot of production from Newton and Randolph at the DE position.
In 2023, C Walters Purdue defense, our ends where mostly big bodies aimed to stuff the run and we relied on our OLBs to do more the pass rush.

with another year under his belt, we can expect a big jump for M’Ba. C Kane said M’Ba was raw last year but this year he should be ready with 6’6 foot 315 frame. He kept over pursing and getting several roughing the passer penalties.
And in addition with Dinkins at 6’5 foot 300 frame, they should be able to swat down a lot of passes.

If our DEs take a big step, it should allow our OLBs to do more than just pass rush.

We lost 5 DEs to transfers and graduates but we are adding 5 from transfers and incoming class.

Expecting big things from M’Ba this year. If C Walters can get him near Newton‘s form, we could have a wicked good defensive line.

Projected Defense lineup. My guess.

Defense

DL - Jeffery M’Ba

DL - Cole Brevard
  • C Walters said Jamarrion Harkless could develop into what he had in Newton at Illinois
DL - Jamarius Dinkins

OLB - Wil Heldt

ILB - Kydran Jenkins

OLB - CJ Madden

DB - Nyland Green
  • Green might be faster than Thienemen. DBs will have more speed than last year.
DB - Markevious Brown

DB - Derrick Rodgers jr.

DB/S - Antonio Stevens?? Not sure if we have a replacement for S Kane. Luke Williams is projected to grow in to the position.

DB/S - Dillion Thieneman

On paper this looks like a solid defense.

Last year we have some flashes from individual defensive players, but as a whole our defense had weaknesses. Opposing teams were able to exploit our weaknesses. Other than the safety opposite Thieneman, i do not have much question marks from roster standpoint.
