Purdue will have a new look this year, but haven't found it yet. That may be okay, for now, as they try different combinations players.

I saw a lot of young talent with raw talent that will be honed over time. But, if they don't establish their look soon, they will struggle against more talented team.

MC- when he's hot, watch out.
JD- give that young man a sandwich.
BS- such a talent.
FL- than young man can shoot FTs, 3s, etc.
Berg- seemed a step behind on O & D.
Furst- seemed strong with limited minutes.

Painter has a lot talent to work with, some pretty young but energetic. The key will be his ability to bring them together to play more cohesively, otherwise, this year will be a tune-up for next season.

Janiel Dacobsen?

I'm not surprised we struggled a bit the more I think about it... we are 3 games in to learning how to play without Zach and that has to be an adjustment to say the least.

That being said, way too many turnovers and some sleeping on defense.. all fixable.

i was most impressed actually with Fletcher.. He has bulked up and scored at all 3 levels and i think he and Braden sorta "took over" towards the end and extended the lead.

Lots to work on, but also lots to be optimistic about both for this season and going forward.

This. I felt like the team struggled a lot trying to sort through the offense and trying to play through the young guys in particular when Jacobsen was out there. I haven’t seen the +/- but it seems it was horrible for DJ until late in the game, not necessarily due to anything he was doing but everything seemed forced and it was sloppy. Towards the end everyone just put their heads down and played the way they could in particular fletch and we looked naturally good again.

100% agree. Also DJ is skinny! Not much that is going to be done with that for a while.. but he is going to get pushed around easily this year.

Berg, as much as I like his commitment to the team, so far seems slow and not all that effective. But, I've only seen him in one game so is just based on a small sample.

Need Braden to not play “perfect” and just play his game. He seemed a bit tight and at some points, acted entitled he wasn’t getting calls. He needs to be the hunter and not the hunted. He’s pegged as the BTPOTY and one of the best PGs in the nation. Guys are coming for him and going to test him every game. I am confident he will be more aggressive in scoring, but just seemed he was a bit tight in the first game.

Fletch looked really good and hope he can keep that going all year.

I didn’t see Braden get too upset about non calls as much as he was just frustrated about everything. Twice he seems upset with his teammates.

Good game and opportunity for learning. This wasn’t some simple “buy” game as TAMUCC is a solid team. 2 straight conference titles and tourney bids.

Myles - love the shooting her brought off the bench but needs to add additional elements when that shot isn’t falling.

Fletcher - looked good and solid

Braden - looked good but seemed tight from time to time. Still learning this is his team.

Jacobsen - an off-season of conditioning will do him wonder. As long as he doesn’t force things, he will be a solid contributor all season

Harris & Cox - those two are legit. Love that they press the ball on the inbound because that forces opposing guards to use up energy and time. That will come in handy down as the season progresses.

Berg - he had moments but seems a step slow. Perhaps it is just getting used to normal game speed v slop minutes last year.

Heide - what happened to him? Something is off and he just parks in the corner and doesn’t seem to do anything.

I’m not worried at all about Braden. I also see the lazy passes by his teammates as very correctable.

The 5 is going to take a while so we have to be patient, but DJ looked great in the last 5 minutes.

Fletch was great and Colvin showed the ability to carry the team with lights out shooting for a stretch.

I am not too worried about Cam yet, but he seemed a little tentative, passing up at least one open shot.

The two minutes for Furst is my only complaint, wonder if he had a slight injury?

Just some observations that many have stated. Braden had too many turnovers but had a lot of assists. Team missed many pick and rolls with the posts being wide open on their roll. Every player showed in spots why they belong on a D1 team considering the younger ones lack the experience. I was surprised how strong and mobile Raleigh Burgess was in last nights game!

Just to be clear, the test is not whether they belong on a d1 team, but a final 4 team.

Heide regression could be a devastating development for this team's prospects this year. Really need his size and athleticism on the wing. If he's going to be a 3 pts in 10 minutes kinda guy that is.. not good.

way too casual with the ball. TAMCC was overplaying the passing lanes and jamming the dribble hand off. We probably had 8 TOs due to that alone. Got to be stronger or smarter when a team turns up the D like that.
A little disappointed we still don't have Colvin, Heide or anyone else attacking the rim off the dribble. With both TKR and DJ willing to step out to the 3pt line, the middle will open up but guys got to commit to attacking. I don't think it'll ever be part of Colvin's game. He's too comfortable setting up for 3s.

I see him as more important as the backup 4, which is a new position for him to learn. I feel like Loyer and Colvin can cover the wing and Smith, Harris, and Cox can cover the 1 and 2.

Think you might see some of that with Harris and Cox, Lenny.....but might take some time to develop that.....Loyer is doing it, too. Gotta expect some struggles, but they can't afford the careless mistakes either with the ball or on defense. From a blank canvas, I like what I see so far, but it's early......lot of opportunities to get challenged and tested coming up.

Wondering if he is less than 100%. I noticed him briefly favor his left leg a couple of times while running up court. You can see him do it for s step at about 11:24 of the first half if you watch the replay.

Even as a freshman…Jacobsen is the most talented of the four center options (Burgess, Furst, Berg, Jacobsen)…and will be a better rim protector than Edey over his career at Purdue. I was very impressed with his performance last night.

I would like to see Colvin logging the most minutes at the three (3).

Did Jacobsen move his classification up….that he should be a senior in high school? If so..even more impressed by him!

Saw that on the re-wind.....couldn't really tell if it was anything or not. On the continuation of the play, he got away with a shove on the loose ball.....haha. That would have been called in conference play.

I agree Choice, TAMUCC was very solid, quick and athletic, great team to learn from. After watching, I can see why Painter did not redshirt Burgess. Ohio State, Michigan and Illinois are going to be tough. May(Michigan) can really coach, his team build is excellent. Wolf may be the best big in the conference, followed closely by Queen.

I will continue to love what Painter does, and he got it straight from Keady. He will do his best to not schedule the bottom of the bottom when it comes to buy games. Granted this one was specifically booked a few years ago when Lutz was coaching there, but they're a very good low-major program.

I remember back when I was in school in the 90s, I studied the non-conference schedule, and saw that 4 non-conference opponents had won their small conference regular season the year before. Both from the metrics standpoint and from the preparation standpoint, this stuff is huge. There's a big difference between schools in the 150 range and those in the 250-300 range.

I hope so. We haven't had that since Ivey.
Kind of disappointed that Colvin and Heide don' have much of it in their game. We were all excited about seeing their athleticism and ability to play above the rim, but other then a few instances, we don't see them using that ability on offense.

Alabama and Marquette around the corner , gonna grow up fast ! I feel come February they'll have matured a lot. DJ has a high upside , I know Painter feels it.
I think we will see our streak end with Alabama. The pre-season is going to be a little rough for the young team but they're going to be dangerous by the end of the season. My way too early prediction is a 4 going in the the NCAA.

My takeaways are: 1. Defense is suspect, but that is very typical of youth. 2. Turnovers were horrendous. I thought Smith was a little sloppy (or maybe those he tried to feed just lacked the awareness?) 3. It would be easy for youth to panic when a no-name team gets within 3 near the end of the 2nd, but I didnt see evidence of that. 4. This team can shoot the lights out.

Be ready for some cardiac ball!

Way too early to say we are a Final Four team this year.
I agree with that. But I don’t understand why we are lowering expectations for this program immediately after making the championship game. Other big programs don’t do that. Can’t be satisfied. The expectation needs to be final four or bust going into every season.

"We" as individual fans can have the full range of expectations. It's best to understand that since we aren't actually practicing, playing, or coaching, OUR expectations have no impact. The only exception is if we are in the stands encouraging our team and disorienting the opponent with the noise.

I don’t really get what you are saying. Are you saying sports fans can’t have expectations for their teams? Or we can’t be frustrated that the program does not appear to be operating with the same mentality as us as fans?
