Thoughts from game. Forewarning: Long post!
  • Locked in and played with purpose. We were ready from the git.
  • Very efficient offensively.
    • Shot Selection. That was probably our best game all year in terms of shot selection for the course of a game (with WKU being our worst). I can’t think of a ‘bad’ shot we took. Of course, it’s easy to say it when the ball is going in, but you can accept a loss much easier when we play like this. It was clear that our shots were: 1) Posts to Haas 2) Finding our shooters in rhythm 3) Carsen push the ball in transition when available. We didn’t really take any off balance jumpers, contested jumpers or wild drives to the hoop. No one took a shot they couldn’t make. Very disciplined. Any independent observer would say 'that is a really well coached team.'
    • Haas' efficiency/We are REALLY good at feeding the post. Really liked that late 2nd half possession where Isaac got it on the right block about 8 ft out. Thought he could get better position and kicked it out to the perimeter, then bumped his man down another 4 ft and immediately got the ball back and put it in the hoop. We are REALLY good at feeding the post and it’s much improved over the years.
    • Carsen is a total stud. I was really impressed with his decision making. When he had a rebound or some open space in transition, is there anyone better at pushing the ball and finishing? I never seen anyone like him. He’s a running back that plays shooting guard. He is so fast dribbling the basketball and then reacting left/right to get around a defender. If the opposing defense doesn’t stop him before he gets going, it’s almost always a layup. Strong (this guy is a soph? huh?) - so finishing with contact is no problem. Also, he took really smart shots and he was playing some tough D and got a few gritty rebounds.
    • The ball always seemed to be moving with crisp passing. It seems our shot making is contagious. Nice to see Cline continue his good shooting off the bench.
    • I didn't even mention Vincent or Dakota yet and they had very good games at 15 and 14 respectively.
  • Defensive intensity/effort.
    • We were glued in from the start.
    • Shoutout to Haas! He seemed to be more ‘reactive’ today in terms of his defensive position in response to the offensive players moves/fakes. A couple of his fouls were debatable. I like his energy on D.
    • Haarms continued swarming and blocking shots.
    • Carsen and PJ seemed really locked in with both jumping passing lanes at times and getting steals.
    • Dakota was solid Dakota.
    • Cline and Nojel gave us some solid minutes off the bench.
Even if the shots weren't falling, but we played with this same decision making and energy, you can be proud of the team. Look forward to continuing our good play into the new year and the meat of the B1G schedule.

Very impressive stretch of completely taking the opposing team out of its offense....

Neither butler nor Valpo had a clue how to consistently run their offense against Purdue’s defensive pressure.

It’s fantastic how Purdue has totally bought into playing tough D, regardless of whether our shots are falling on the other end... keeping this up will have HUGE benefits as the season wears on.

I'd still like to have a few weeks with Haas, to teach him how to be more athletic in the post, how to get his center of gravity lower, explode up toward the rim, get his hand up on defense, anticipating the defense coming to him . . . etc.

Awesome skillz, but needs a LOT more work.

+1

Well said. I felt like he did better in this regard today against Butler than we've seen in the past. Of course more work in this area would be great!

This is encouraging. The NBA must see the potential.
