True, but imo a scoring 3/4 would hide a lot of weaknesses as well as make us way harder to guard. Maybe we can coax the NW kid or someone a lot like him to help out in the off season.
This team needs a Jones. Someone who can play good D and step up with shots and make plays when the big three are hitting on all cylinders.
Smith played 40 minutes again tonight and I don't see how that's going to help him come end of season.
Loyer did nothing for an entire half.
It feels like this team needs about a week off but that's not happening rest of the way regular season.
Same ole same ole. Worrying about Renn and Smith getting their stats and forgetting to win . Furst has plateaued, the two freshmen may be good sometimes but not consistent. Plays Loyer way too much , even before Colvin got hurt he only played 4 minutes in the first half. This is all on Painter because we haven’t improved from the beginning of the year
This team badly needs Jones. But what Purdue fans don’t realize is his defense was always awesome even before he came to Purdue. I thought he earned raves as being the defensive player of the year while playing at SIU. That may or may not be true. But he came to Purdue with a reputation of being a good ball handler, a guy who likes to shoot threes and a defensive stopper.
And that’s a huge issue this year Brandon, Loyer and Cox are not known for their defense.
Could a portal player improve this? Only if he beat out Loyer or Cox or Braden for playing time. Is that likely to happen? Would a portal player beat out Loyer? Doubtful.
Remember the guard we brought in from Michigan as a grad transfer? He was a good player and good addition but he never really received a chance to play to show his talents.
What would be the point of bringing in a guard from the portal if Loyer and smith continue to start?

With Jacobson back next year as our defensive center, we could go to the 3 guard look like we did when Jones started with Loyer and Smith.

Y'all trust Painter but somehow think he'll lose all his evaluation abilities because a kid comes from the portal?
We need to max out our spots and fill with however many portal guys as we have spots to offer.
We are pretty deep IMO. If Daniel doesn't get hurt is this even a thing? Consider the current line up remove Caleb and insert a bigger Daniel. A transfer would probably be a fourth or fifth option at least on paper. Not what the best transfers are looking for. And beating out the nonstarters for minutes won't be easy. Just my humble opinion. What were you thinking? And who would you sit? Saying TKR returns on every point.
Next year we will have three guys who play down low any meaningful minutes.

I think we may get a decommit, right now Purdue is riding high on developing players seems more likely to me. Every year coaches get fired and decommits happen EJ Walker a 6'8 4star South Carolina commit?
Well, they’re all really 5s, not 4s. Which is the problem. We need a stretch 4. A Rob or Vince… even a Mason or Grady would be nice.
So, which is it? We didn't know Jones was a defensive guy or that we did know that he was?
I'll answer for you. Everyone knew Lance was a defensive guy coming in.
Do you watch games, or no? Cox is a pest and set the tone for the Michigan game at home and him and Braden put the game out of reach within the first 3 min of the game with their defense. Cox is going to be a very good defender and Smith is a candidate for BIG DPOTY.

For backup and to get better? What is the point of any team bringing in a transfer? Only 5 guys can start...
Cox and Harris are decent defenders and play similar roles as Jones. A transfer portal at guard doesn’t help us a whole lot. We need a rim protector which we get back in DJ.
Catchings isn't playing many minutes. I wonder if he regrets that decision. He would have seen the floor for a significant time.
He would fill a void. Wasn't someone comparing him to Vince on here? If so, he would be a very solid get.

My point was against grabbing someone from the portal just to fill a need when signing a high school player could be just as good or maybe even better.
My point is that usually portal players are a 1 year fix. They are nothing more than a one and done player who either wants big money or couldn’t beat out the players to start at his last school.
Ask yourself, why do Purdue players enter the portal? Purdue football players enter because they want money and a chance to play for a winner. Purdue basketball players enter the portal because they couldn’t beat out the competition.
If Myles were to enter the portal, what would be his reasoning? Basically he got tired of coming off the bench and he couldn’t beat out Loyer.
Think about it. Would we or Painter want to add a player who only entered the portal because he wasn’t good enough to start for his last team?
And does Purdue really have the NIL money to use and attract a real portal star like Dickinson and the guy from UW that Kansas paid out?
With all that said, some incoming freshman demand as much money as portal players do!
I’m not against adding portal players. I just don’t believe they are as great as some of you believe them to be. Look at Gillis. He was supposed to be one of the better portal players available last year. Just ask a Duke fan their impression of adding Gillis or adding another high school recruit like Flagg. By adding Gillis, Duke probably informed a 4/5 recruit they had no room for him. I doubt that made Duke fans happy if they turned away a top 50 high school player to add Gillis.
And look at Morton and Newman and Hunter and IT. My bet is their schools are now wishing they hadn’t added that portal transfer.
So back to Jones! He was great last year. He was a portal addition. Painter does look at the portal for players. He just didn’t last year because he thought he had a commitment from Catchings and Harris. I still can’t believe the timing of Catchings decision to decommit . There had to be something there that Painter will never make public. If Catchings had not signed, I believe Painter would have looked to the portal. Catchings screwed us over big time! I’m not sure why and I’m not sure what he was thinking. But yes. Catchings intentionally screwed us over. He could have at least stayed a year before transferring. Was BYU even one of the schools he was considering when first being recruited? And now that BYU has that #1 prospect coming in, karmas has taken place.
Given a choice of adding a portal player or a top 20 one and done high school player, which would you rather have? There are risks both ways.
I look at these we need a portal player posts much like I look at the fire painter posts. The portal player posts never identify the player or the position. They just say we need a portal player. What you need to do is identify our team’s deficiency and identify a player that would fix or improve that deficiency. At the moment I see three deficiencies. Our guards are playing terrible perimeter defense. And our center position is not guarding the basket or getting rebounds. and I believe we need a taller forward to play the 3 rather than a guard. Jacobsen should fix one of those deficiencies. Can West or Benter or Harris fix the other deficiency?
We have West coming next year. I believe we have room to add 1-3 more players. I expect 1-2 players will leave. I believe Painter is waiting until the end of the year to worry about who to add via recruiting high school players or the portal. I haven’t really looked lately to see who is left uncommitted/signed from high school. I also haven’t seen any high school recruits with Purdue in their top 5 that haven’t already committed or that Purdue was pursuing.
If Sisley decommited and became available, would you rather have Sisley or a portal transfer? Personally I’d rather have Sisley.

If someone is willing to pay them starter money, then you never know.

If Cam does move on.....do we go after a big guard in the portal or another 4-5 guy?
It is hard for us to know how Jacobsen is progressing. If no issue and soph year increases for Burgess take place ...then a 5 isn't a concern, but not knowing that I question if a good 5 for a year wouldn't be useful and help the team.
Some brief search on EJ seems to fill that need if OB52 is correct. He seems like a very fluid player. He might be a good/great pick-up for us....if so

This team doesn't need another role player to be NC contender, they need one more stud. Even if it's a PG and you play them together, get an elite guy and let Painter figure out how the lineup will work.

Things were not as good as they seemed heading into the OSU game and they are not as bad as they seem now. Regardless, this is still a very good team and will be returning almost everyone, barring transfers out. The sky is not falling. I definitely see the defensive issues of the last two games as addressable.
