I know there is a big game tonight and I wouldn't put it past this team to shock the world with a win, but I can't help but think about what could be.

Assuming that Smith/TKR/Loyer all return next year, this team is only 1-2 key pieces away from being a Championship contender if not favorite. I would say the core of next year's team is Elite 8 good as is, so although he doesn't need to do anything, I think Painter knows that even if he is at Purdue for 20 more years, he may never have a better opportunity to win a Championship than next year. I mean how often will he return a first team AA point guard, AA Power forward, the purest shooter in college basketball, and a talented and experienced supporting cast?

Here is what I want to see in order of priority to take us to the moon.

1) A starting caliber 5 that can split time with Jacobsen. These guys are a dime a dozen right now and an absolute must have knowing Berg is not this person and Jacobsen is somewhat unknown coming off of injury.

2) A long and athletic 3/4 that can guard the perimeter, create his own shot, and finish through contact. If Heide and Colvin both return, I think we will be fine as both will likely continue to improve their game. However, if we were to replace one of these two with an elite defender/creator/finisher, this team would be nearly unbeatable.

I think post depth is non-negotiable for sure. Need an elite rebounder IMO.

Heide and Colvin have not been consistent, but I still love them as program guys who continue to develop. They are still underclassmen.

Colvins defensive improvement was awesome this year. This off season he needs to work on scoring off dribble IMO. If he can get to rim he is the missing wing piece you are describing.

I do think they need another versatile wing player that is athletic, can handle the ball and defend. Maybe a Ty Rogers/Nojel type that could play 1-4 if needed. It doesn't matter if they can't shoot with this roster.

I think what Painter does with adding a gaurd tells you what he thinks of Gicarri/Harris/West.

Front court depth and rebounding is priority 1.

My priority 2 would be a a 6’8 forward who could play the 3 instead of playing a 3 guard offense

1) Even if Berg isn't the guy (and he still might be) then Burgess might be. If he settles in and gets bigger you might want RB/TKR together part of the time. Coaches sure love him. DJ should be more than fine. He'd been playing non stop for a couple of years while growing. Now hes had a nice forced rest that should have allowed all his bones to continue developing. He's also apparently put on 20 lbs and working on getting stronger. he'll be 100% and "should" be significantly more of a factor next season. (fingers crossed). Between he and TKR not sure there's any minutes at 5 (and maybe 4) that won't be spoken for. In an ideal world, be great. But not sure they will play.
2) this for sure. I hope we can get that if someone leaves. But I still hope that one of Myles/Cam beats THEM out. ;)

I would think a guy that loves to hang around the bucket and grab rebounds from misses and slam the ball home would be a perfect fit. We could really use an inside force like a Rodman. He could allow tkr and Jacobsen to move a little further outside and develop some new offensive moves.

I consider Berg a known commodity at this point. His offense skill is simply not good enough to compensate for his poor foot speed and slow/poor defensive decision making. On a Final four caliber team, he is at most, a 5 minute a game player that can be useful banging and fouling other bigs.

I also think it's way too convenient to think of Jacobson as the savior without seeing him play a full season. Right now, we can only look at his potential, but none of us know how many minutes he can play per game, how well he will hold up over a Season, or how well he will move with the extra weight. My guess is he will be a 20 minute a game player that will have some huge games and also some nights where a fast 5 in the mold of TKR will make him look silly. Even Edey wasn't a stud in YR 1.

I like Burgess as a versatile role player, but I wouldn't like to see him on the court at the same time as TKR outside of a few matchup based situations. Having 2 players that can be exploited on the perimeter against the teams like Houston, Auburn, etc.. that we are bound to run into is a recipe for disaster.

I’m not that concerned about Jacobsen. Last year, he spent the majority of his summer practicing and playing with his U.S. national team. He didn’t have much time to practice with Purdue.

Yet, in his limited practice time at Purdue, he was still able to beat out Furst, Berg and burgess who practiced all summer to claim the starting center position for Purdue. That told me all I needed to know about how good he was and how well he fit into painter’s plans. Painter changed his plans to accommodate Jacobsen at center and keep tkr at the 4. That spoke volumes about his confidence in Jacobsen

Don't get me wrong. I'm excited about Jacobson and I expect he will be the Day 1 starter. However, I think to put us in the best position to win a Championship, it would be in Painter's best interest to have a battle tested 5 to play alongside him that isn't named Berg or Burgess.

Jacobsen likely is a 20 minute a night player, TKR probably 30, that gives 30 floating minutes between the two spots, I’m sure that’s being pushed, the minutes are out there. I highly doubt both Burgess and Berg are still around, maybe 1 sticks around, it wouldn’t surprise me if both left.

I like CJ and Giccari and think they will get better as time goes. I really don't have an opinion on West since I really haven't watched him, but Matt wanted him. If Matt gets his guard, I suspect it will be a seasoned player at PG to allow braden to rest some. Perhaps that player is sound on offense and defense? As of now CT and Giccari are more combo guards...which is fine, but Matt may want to count on a player more similar to Braden as a play maker knowing how players sort of depend on Braden offensively at this time in case Myles/Cam remain somewhat shooters off the pass

I totally agree! Jacobsen is only going to play 20-25 minutes a game. We badly need an experienced backup who can give us 20-25 minutes and grab 8-10 rebounds and score 8-12 points off put backs, alley oops and pick and rolls. We badly missed that this year

Berg could leave, would like Burgess to hang

He is.
If he wasn't, Painter wouldn't be going after someone to play ahead of him in the portal.
Next season he's going to be behind TKR, DJ, portal guy, and Burgess. Plus Heide will steal a few minutes a game at the 4 as well.
hope Heide hangs around

Ah, so you know what he's got AND you know who Matt is going to get. Wow, you are smart!
But he avg 6 minutes a game. so, no, you don't know. You just think you know.
Matt will recruit a better player at any position. Nothing new there.
Doesn't mean you know what they've got as a soph paying 6 minutes. ;)

I think Cox is going to be really good. He doesn’t really seem to get rattled much. I hope he Heide, Harris, and Colvin all stay but I could imagine one of them leaving given the competition level at the 2 and 3 spots.

Heide is going to get some nice offers. Colvin, maybe but Heide showed some clutch shooting on a big stage.
It was an odd shooting season for him. If my mental math is right, he had a 19 game stretch where he was 6/39 from 3 and for the other games he was 25/40 from 3. When he wasn’t in his slump he was one of the best outside shooters in the country. I think that Painter needs to find a way to keep him.

Heide and Colvin are going to be stars , and going to get big offers. Wouldn’t blame either for taking the bag, but hoping they stay and grass isn’t always greener

With NIL you can make room really.
We do get additional scholarships but have to be careful of having to many players.Only 200 minutes to hand out. Would rather give those 2 scholarships to walk Ons as seniors who have helped the program for 4 years

We absolutely need a dude who can battle for the boards. We got out-athleted by Houston.
Get a 6’9 guy who can rebound and do more than set picks on offense.

Need another guy who can handle the ball, create and get his own shot. We only have 1 of those and he’s expected to do it every time down the floor while the rest of the 3 hang out around the 3 pt line. Braden is a good enough shooter that if we get more guys who can dribble drive, he’ll get more kick out open looks.

I’ve been saying for a while, we need 2-3 portal differences makers and we have another F4 team.

I think 1-2 and we are a F4 team. 2-3 for NC team

But we have to realize what he is and what he’s not. He’s a 6’7 athlete jump shooter who’s not going to handle the ball or create.
Games like last night show what he can do but he needs to do that consistently.

Bone, during their slumps, Heide and Colvin were 18th and 20th overall from 3 compared to other sophomores that played 20 min or less with 5 fgs or less. The guys ahead of them were in smaller conferences or on bad teams. I would say they have now jumped ahead of all of those or a major of them (haven’t looked). And while they were 18th and 20th, they were both 1-2 makes away from being in the top 10.

Everyone wanted them to be these guys who came in, shot 75% from the field, take it to the rack and be lights out on the defensive side and grab every board. They played their roles and they got better and have been great since mid February and on.

We absolutely need to keep both on top of the others. They know their roles and will be better next year.

I think that’s ok. There’s only one basketball and there is a lot of value in having a floor spacer who can crash the boards. His bigger issue at the 4, imo, is he doesn’t quite have the length to deal with some guys. That said, I like the idea of a TKR, DJ, Heide rotation at the 4/5, understanding that Painter wants to add one more to the mix.

I know who Matt is going after because a guy is literally visiting tomorrow lol pretty sure that guy plays Bergs position.

I'm also sure Berg wasn't playing 6 minutes a game after the first few games of the season. I'm also sure Berg doesn't play at all if DJ were healthy and available. I'm also pretty sure Berg is not passing up the four (or more) players ahead of him next season for playing time. Not TKR, or Burgess, or DJ or Cliff or the equivalent big Matt gets.

This is why we need 3 portal guys.
1) 6’9 defender, rebounder, rim runner.
2) 6’4 ball handler, creator, get his own shot and get the D into rotations. Smith is gonna wear down.
3) a big as an insurance policy if DJ struggles with injuries or to talk the load off TKR.

Agreed but would say IMO, your list priority wise should be:

I don’t see why 3 and 1 could be the same player. I would take a Cluff in a heartbeat to fulfill this role. I know he isn’t the shot blocker that some are looking for, but DJ will bring the rim protection and Cluff is an absolute beast on the boards if you look at the stats.

If you find the perfect player to fill #3, you take it, but there is only one Braden Smith and at minimum he is playing 37 minutes most games regardless of who Purdue brings in. Call me overly optimistic, but I think that CJ Cox as a sophomore will be a very good player, likely better than Lance Jones was a year ago. Retain the core guys and bring in Cluff and I am ecstatic.
