There might have been a thread about this before but I can't remember for sure.

How do you guys think the minutes will be distributed among the players this season?

As a point of reference, these were the minutes per game averages (rounded to the nearest whole number) of the regulars from this past season:

Rapheal Davis: 31 MPG (in 34 GP)
Jon Octeus: 29 MPG (in 34 GP)
Vince Edwards: 27 MPG (in 33 GP)
A.J. Hammons: 24 MPG (in 34 GP)
Kendall Stephens: 22 MPG (in 34 GP)
Dakota Mathias: 20 MPG (in 34 GP)
Isaac Haas: 15 MPG (in 34 GP)
P.J. Thompson: 14 MPG (in 30 GP)
Basil Smotherman: 13 MPG (in 34 GP)
Bryson Scott: 11 MPG (in 25 GP)

The additions of Johnny Hill and Caleb Swanigan give this season's team two new players that are undoubtedly expected to play significant minutes. In a way, they will replace Octeus and Scott's minutes but with redshirt Jacquil Taylor, Ryan Cline, and Grant Weatherford being added to the fold as well, it's almost a certainty that there will be decreased minutes for at least a couple of the returnees.

Using the assumption that whoever the regulars are, they will play in every single game this season (unlikely but makes for simpler forecasting), how do you think the minutes will be spread out amongst them?

Summary: I think we'll go 9 deep by Jan/Feb. AJ, Isaac, Caleb, Ray, and Vince at C/F. At guard (not specifying SG or PG), I think it'll be Mathias, Hill, Stephens, & Cline.

Center:
I think we're looking at a similar split of minutes between AJ (25 min) and Isaac (15 min). It could change to be more like 30/10, but I doubt it. Clearly Caleb can play that position as well if needed, as can Taylor.

PF: Caleb (25 min) and Vince (15 min). Taylor will also get some limited minutes.

SF: Ray (30 min) and Vince (10 min). Vince potential B1G 6th man of the year. Basil will also get some minutes. If Ray's shooting improves enough for him to play some SG, then Vince, Basil, and Taylor all stand to get more minutes than if Ray only plays SF.

SG: Early season: minutes distributed broadly across the SG candidates. B1G: Best performer (25 min), Next best (10), Next (5).

PG: Early season: minutes distributed broadly across the PG candidates. B1G: Best performer (32 min), Next (8).

Agree with much of that.

Overall I think AJ, Hill (assuming he's our starter at the point), Davis, Biggie and Vince will all get somewhere in that 25-30/game range. Stephens and Mathias around 20 each. PJ and Smotherman 10-15. The rest under 10.

So you believe that Haas will get less than 10 MPG? I would heavily disagree with that assessment. I see Haas getting 15-20 minutes in non-conference and very similar minutes in conference games. Do not underestimate this young man!

Has anyone watched Hill scrimmage yet? Is is going to be as good or better than Octeus? How about Ryan Cline? It seemed like they were saying he was a near Rick Mount -type of shooter. Is he anywhere near that good to where he will shoot better than Stephens and Mathias?

After watching Ryan Cline in person in one game (IN v KY all star game in Lexington) and online a few other times, and Rick Mount in dozens of games at Purdue and on the road, you can see a bit of Rick in Ryan. He does have the uncanny ability to drain shots even when the other team knows he's going to shoot and sends two defenders to stop it. Nevertheless its way too premature to put him in that class as a scorer. But he also plays & seems to understand defense and has reasonable passing skills, so he might exceed Mount in those areas, and with CMP, those things are necessary to see floor time. And finally, for those who wonder about his quickness (beyond his quick shot release), apparently he topped the entire team in their recent mile run at something just above five minutes. That tells me he has at least some reasonable speed compared to his teammates and most certainly has made a significant commitment to being in shape with the expectation that he will be playing this year and not redshirt.

I'm looking forward to seeing him in game situations with this team, and would love to see him earn playing time because he's simply better than those currently ahead of him on the already deep and strong depth charts. But realisticly I wouldn't be surprised to see him get time in the first ten games and then redshirt due to the logjam ahead of him (assuming nothing changes wrt injuries, etc.).

People who possibly won't play much.
1. Jacquil Taylor
2. Basil Smotherman
3. Grant Weatherford
4. Ryan Cline
5. Pj Thompson

Agree generally, but I do think Cline in particular could climb high this year. Yes, he came in skinny, but I seem to recall reports that he is putting on muscle fairly rapidly, plus he led the team in the mile run, and we know he is perhaps the best shooter on the team. He could be starting by Mid-December for all we know.

Most people still believe Cline will redshirt this year.

Left him out for some odd reason. I'd agree with 15-20.

PG: Hill- 25; PJ- 8; Dakota/Ray/Vince by comittee- 7.
SG: Ray-20; Kendall-10; Dakota-10
SF: Vince-15; Ray-10; Kendall-10; Dakota-5
PF: Biggie-25; Vince-15
C: AJ-25; Haas-15

Redshirt Cline or Weatherford (preferably Cline so we have him longer). There just won't be many minutes for them no matter how you slice it.
Taylor and Basil will get minutes where they can. Not many minutes to go around.

This team is loaded. The best players deserve all the minutes they can handle. Just because we are deep, doesn't mean we should spread ourselves thin with minutes. Give the best players the most minutes.

if biggie can give Purdue 25 a night, there is no reason he shouldn't be averaging some where around a double double. Hell, if AJ and Biggie can each get 25 minutes, I would venture to say that we may out rebound every team in the schedule and some may be by a very large margin. Conceivably, that would be in the ball park of 20-30 rebounds a game of that happens.

He will get all the minutes he can handle. I think he will get 20-25 minutes a night minimum. He is down to 250, ran the mile in 5.41, and is with the weight trainer every day, even outside of workout and practice, working hard to get in shape.

We will out rebound a lot of teams. Only Maryland can even match our size, and our size is more talented than theirs. Will be disappointed if we ever get out rebounded by much this season.

I mentioned that due to foul troubles most freshman seem to get themselves in to during the conference season.
