PJ and the offense

Well to be fair amount of credit to Braden Smith and CMP.

Got to have the players and that is a credit to CMP

Take Cox for example. CMP after Perry....sees this kid instead and boom.... another Carsen Edwards like Boiler in the making.

Take TKR as another example. How many top 50's have we got from the iu back yard. Yet CMP did it.

Loyer great player that had a lot of choices. Yet CMP gets him here.

And Smith.....CMP knew what he saw before others and now is mentioned in with Keller and Parkinson as one of the Greats.

So yes, I am sure PJT is good and will have his day. We are lucky to have him. But CMP is the genius behind the whole deal.

Super impressed. We lose Edey and Kenpom has us #3 in offense. We have been scoring in droves against good teams. It seems like PJ is expected to takeover some day but I hope he doesn’t leave and come back like paint did and we can throw him enough money to stay the whole time.
The ONLY thing I would say (and this is nitpicking big time) is that out of bounds play where we tried to lob it to Myles and we forced it and it was a turnover…didn’t like that. It did seem like that may have been Sasha drawing that up. With that said, I love the aggressiveness/creativity and trying to utilize our athleticism. Just maybe not in that spot 😂

Yeah that was bad, 4 point swing.

Add to the list that Painter recognized PJ’s talent and entrusted him with a huge role on one of the best teams in the country even before PJ was named an official assistant coach.

That was bad. I think that was more on whoever threw the pass though. Kind of like a QB throwing to option #1 in double coverage for the INT isn't the OCs fault. Take the check down if covered, 3 seconds is plenty of time to dribble into a shot.

Good point…obviously if they had converted the roof would have blown off 😂

I like the "Bird" play there......have Loyer inbound, set a screen and immediately go right back to Loyer for a wing shot.

That offense with much credit given to PJ AND Matt, is blessed to have Braden doing what he does. Remove Braden and the offense against a good team is not nearly as good. We are witnessing a player at the 1 unlike any in my memory of Purdue basketball and Purdue has had some good ones. Braden is special and LIVED in the gym last summer. I think we can say the same about Fletcher as well.

The whole team contributed last night and there were many important plays by a variety of players, but in the heat of the moment Braden getting on the floor towards the corner opposite of Alabama (SW corner) to retrieve a loose ball, get it back and then smartly draw a foul on a defender as he was dribbling the ball across half court was at a crucial time and play. Braden wills the team to a higher level with his fire and play to do whatever he can to lead Purdue to a win. That will, that fire...that competitive spirit has no number of measure to rate the effect, but controlling the game is huge. BTW, Braden's little brother apparently has the same fire as he may have a broken nose from diving on the floor and a player diving on him Thursday

I’m seeing a lot of the same qualities and skills from CJ. Hopefully we roll right from Braden (after two more years) seamlessly into CJ being that same initiator of the offense.

I like the guards...no question, but Braden is at a different level passing the ball and finding people everywhere on the court. Before he came to Purdue I wrote about his vision and passing and it is something just really rare to be at that level. That said, CJ will be a favorite for Purdue and he and Giccari will be very good, but a different kind of good. I just see some things that Braden does as a generation player. Braden flirts with a triple double many games and we take it for granted. Last night I had a bit of a concern when he took Braden out and only had Cox and maybe Fletcher on the court as the only two ball handlers. Not sure if that was when Cox went off for some threes, but initially the offense stagnated the first possession or two as that was asking a lot out of a freshman that is a scorer more than a facilitator...as was Carsen and Willie Deane.

Yes when Braden came out first time cox was in for about a min or so of game times then Braden came out a second time and cox came in and that’s when he hit 3 threes in under a min. If cox can give us half of that when he filled in for B, then that’s huge.

Yeah, the first time they were trying to figure out who does what and the next time he just hit some shots and there was no figuring. ;)

What struck me last night was how much fun this team is to watch, especially on offense and Braden obviously has a lot to do with it, but he is surrounded by players who are also fun to watch. It’s going to be a fun year.
