Our program has been one that has not been affected by the Transfer Portal unlike 99% of our peers. We have had a transfer come in or go, but very limited. Well, I guess we are like everyone else now. It might not be to the extent of other programs still, but this is how it is going to be going forward as the money becomes bigger each year for players.

We are definitely in need of an athletic wing at the 3 position now. I thought with Colvin leaving that Heide's minutes would increase significantly. I guess money offers were too big to ignore or Heide didn't like his role?

Who are some likely portal guys that could be brought in? There have been a lot of coaching changes, so there has to be several potential nice portal additions.

Just out of curiousity, if the 3 was mainly played by Cox this year, why would you assume Heide would have gotten significant minutes there this year? Especially with the transfer portal open and us having several spots? Not trying to be a jerk, genuinely curious weren't most of his minutes at the 4? The 3 position was manned mostly by freshman.

This is the real reason for our departures this year. Berg and Wadell are obvious. But Colvin had already lost to Cox, Harris outplayed him most of the time as well. He was likely 3rd best case with 2 more guards coming in as freshmen that are really good.

Heide was a surprise to me as he had an easy path to at least 10-15 min a game at the 4 and maybe some minutes at the 3, but when you actually think about it there are are at least 2 bigs that are better than him that can play the 4 (DJ and TKR) and another that he would be competing for minutes with (Burgess). If Painter is also looking to bring in a portal wing/forward, the writing is on the wall. He got buried (for good reason) on the depth chart.

Most teams play no more than 9 players in their rotations. Right now we have 7 of those filled before you consider freshmen and additional transfers that had these guys beat. (Big 3, JD, Cluff, Cox, and Harris) If either West or Benter demand time due to performance and/or a transfer from the portal takes one of those spots, then neither Heide or Colvin would see the floor next year.

If Heide and Myles are leaving, then Benter or someone else is beating them in practice or they think they are not going to get minutes. I don't see Heide getting a lot of $$$ in market. He can't dribble, he can't score off the bounce, for all his hops he shoots a set shoot. TKR is going to play 30 min at the 4, Cluff and DJ at the 5. Burgess will play the 4 in the off Minutes. Braden is 35+ at the 1, Cox, Harris, Loyer and the PP at the 2/3 ........... Point being with the 5 established now where do the 4/3 minutes come from for Cam? Especially since he can't dribble to play the 3....

Bingo -- when you're on a superior team that is brining in superior talent .... choices, choices

Hey man, Conner Enright just signed to IU! Hope he’s a good “squirrel” for your team this year. Maybe IU can make the first round!
Don't know much about him but it can't be much worse than Xavier Johnson or Myles Rice under Woodson or Josh Newkirk under Crean/Archie.

Curious of your opinion on the slow rate of acquisition (and that may be a bad assumption on my part, I'm not following any other teams so maybe they are all going at the same speed in terms of signing players). I know a lot of players portalled (hey, screw you spell check for not recognizing that word. Let's just say I invented it!) this year, I also remember the stats from last year that said something like 50% never found another team? I may also be getting BB and FB portalling mixed up. Anyway, is Devries taking his time, whiffing on who he wants, looking for a player to build a team around, ????

addendum: I did find this from 2023.

His time last year at West Virginia, he didn't have his first player commit until like April 28th(that wasn't his son). So I think he's just very deliberate about who he wants. I do believe he wanted Conwell, but Conwell had wanted to go to UofL last year but Kelsey got to him just too late and Kelsey had reached out to him first this go around. I'm not in any panic mode right now considering it's just April 3rd. Tons of good players in the portal. And considering what he did with the roster he had last year and missing two of his best players.. I'll wait to freak out later if needed.

I mean what he did was have pretty much the same season Indiana just had that led to their coach getting fired.

Michigan and Purdue are light years ahead next season. MSU is MSU. Illinois will always be decent. UCLA is good. Oregon. Doesn't seem likely you'll see anything different out of IU next season unless it's worse to me.

Wasn’t the portal open for 45 days instead of 30 and ended on May 1?

Again, he went 19-13 missing his best player in Tucker and Jayden Stone who didn't get to play a game(averaged 21ppg at Detroit). So I think he did pretty darned good in the Big 12 with a roster that shouldn't have sniffed 19 wins and having Small as your best player.

The transfer portal has not been static. The rules of engagement have changed constantly and what was $100k for star players is now $10M while reserves who might not play 10 minutes a game get $200k+

Most of these kids have no shot at the NBA and will end up playing in Europe or China. Why wouldn't they take the payday?

It's the Wild Wild West out there right now. This is a chance for these kids to cash in before they reign in and put rules in place

IU is a football school now. Basketball just holds over their fans until Spring football practice starts.
IU basketball is a farm team for DePaul basketball. Enright got sent down from DePaul to IU due to Kaleb Banks being signed at DePaul with his friend, CJ Gunn.

Once Purdue signs Smith to his 4-5 million in NIL value, not many more acorns to go around to the other squirrels.
Not even close to true! Purdue has one of the fattest NIL accounts. I'm hearing we got Cluff for less than market value reportedly ISU was offering 750,000 speculations is we were under 7 figures. Money isn't an issue with Purdue is expected to top 8 million in NIL.

It is funny how they both ended up there. Not sure why Banks went there from Tulane. DePaul is garbage.

Would like to see a matchup with DePaul vs IU.

Will IU schedule any P5 non con games this year? They have UK right? Would be funny if Mbgako plays at UK

Paint is going into the portal and getting experienced players . Benter will have to wait til after next year to contribute . I believe Paint is going all in with 6-6 6-7 wing players and with Harris and Cox as main contributors in the backcourt won’t be many minutes to spread around

Marquette will be meh
I am sure they'll be a Q1 or Q2 type game. Shaka will probably have a tourney team. Haven't heard any announcements for the rest of the schedule. I think DeVries wants one a bit tougher than Woody did. Not sure if that'll happen this early.

How much incentive does DeVries have to win in year one? Obviously the portal changes expectations around rebuilds but I’m assuming he got backing to ‘build a sustainable base’ before taking the job.

Well he has a 6 year contract, making almost as much a Painter on average per year…so good point. However, I don’t think he makes it all six years.

He will get a pass his first year I think. Though he could definitely make the tourney in year one if it's a healthy roster. Like any fan base, he will get some pressure from some about not being Top 5 immediately and there will be the other opposite. I think most fans will be in the middle. Just watching for progress and good play. Probablem for the last two coaches was seeing habits early on that were massive red flags.

"a bit tougher schedule" Geezus, put your big boy pants on (not clown pants) and schedule like a real program. Otherwise, welcome to the Crown tournament where you belong.

For a “blue blood” they sure like to duck actual P5 teams
All depends on what's available. Definitely more flexible without the B1G/ACC tourney gone. The joke that was the Crossroads Classic being gone. The Gavitt games being gone. I'm not sure how the rest of the schedule will shake out for next year.

The crossroads actually forced you to play somebody, same for the ACC challenge. Better than you do otherwise. OOC schedule is a joke for a team that likes to think they are with the big boys. "Depends on what is available" is another joke. Why does PU have no problem getting a tough OOC schedule but somehow IU can't? Load up on cupcakes and then hope you can do well enough in conference to make up for it. Doesn't sound like a legit big boy does it???

Yea Butler and Notre Dame were just so stupidly good when Indiana played them. I think IU only lost once throughout. As far as the ACC challenge. I just didn't care for it. Indiana can set a series with Duke or UNC if they want and it was just an ESPN blabbering time. Crap like the Crossroads kept Indiana out of the classic with UNC, Kentucky and UCLA. Ohio State replaced us because of it. Instead we played mediocre Butler and Notre Dame teams and it was always a lose/lose for Indiana.
